I know this is 4 years ago... but you shouldn't handle the babies when they are so young. The mother could end up abandoning it or even killing it.

The mother ferret must really trust you. Usually when you touch a baby ferret the mother will notice it has a different smell and will kill it as she will think it is a threat. My brother rubbed the baby with straw or saw dust after handling one.

@cavaliersfan08 One of my friends picked up one of the new born ferrets then she put it back down. A few minutes later i checked on then and there was the mother eating the baby my friend had picked up.

Wiping saliva is the same thing as touching it.

@starscreamgal because by taking the baby away from the mother it stresses the mother out and ferrets dont have good memories and if you put the baby back in there after a little while the mother wont recognize it and will cannibalize the baby

@starscreamgal well yes it does but it also recognizes by sight and all baby ferrets have one distinct feature about them that the mother can remember so if the baby doesnt smell right she can look for that feature if she see's it she know's its hers... but if you stress them out by having one of the babies taken away too long she will then cannibalize all of her babies

if you do that and the mom has the babies makes sure to seperate the dad to make sure that the dad dosent eat the babies its better to be safe then sorry cuz dads tend to do that to the poor babys :(
