the way most people I know use it is to use imovie 08 for compatibility. import files into 08 and save the project, then open the project in HD so that you can import previously incompatible files yet still edit them effectively. Although this is mostly a mute point because 09 and 11 DON'T SUCK.
but if you're stuck with imovie 08 and HD, there's the solution to using both programs effectively.

My teacher insists on us using imovie to edit our films. It really sucks ass if you want to do advanced editing. I'm used to using Sony Vegas and i got so frustrated I couldn't add the effects in imovie that I wanted to. I thought it was supposed to be easy to use but that doesn't mean dumb it down.

It's clear Apple wanted to start clean, and they've redeemed themselves with iMovie '09 in my opinion.

actually you can change a clip to black and white by going to the little sun in the left top corner and adjust the exposure saturation and the rbg the contrast etc
I like imovie 7 better, because it is easy to use, I agree: imovie hd has more functions, but it is difficult to use, and t's annoying that you have to import the same clip again if you have used a bit of it in your projekt.

Lern2Cinelerra. It's opensource, compressed it tar.gz so you can install through terminal, and it's the free equivalent of finalcut or Vegas. Oh btw, Linux ftw. I may get macbook to take along with me some places, but Linux is my main stuff :3.

I get a kick out of this only because you said that you can't do the effects like B&W, etc. Yet there is a video a kid uploaded telling you how to do the effects in 08. To me it just sounds like you are use to the other version and are not willing to learn the 08 version.

you can change it to black and white just go to video adjustments which u must go to the clip and click the sunny icon and put the saturation at the lowest.
uhh ull get used to 1movie 08 eventually, even if it can't do all the same things it can do new thigns as well, though your write precise down to seconds editing for music makes it very difficult especially when attempting to sync music to video speech it drives me nuts
iMovie '08 is such a disappointment. Placing music is simply frustrating, no effects is SHIT, how can they possibly call this an 'upgrade'. i have started using WMM because for the first time in a long time, it is much better and easier to use than iMovie. THANK YOU. I just got a new Macbook and was SO excited 2 b able to use iMovie. I had been using Windows Movie Maker previously, and gee whiz I thought THAT was shitty. Why all the hating on iMovie 08, never had a problem with it, and yes I had iMovie 06 HD, have not felt the need to go back. Probably because I am using Final Cut Pro, but whatever, upgrade to Final Cut Express you won't be sorry, well you would be sorry if you didn't know how to use it, actually I do use iMovie 08 frequently set parameters, quick edits, and make it .XML file and fine tune in Final Cut, never had an issue, but that's just me...

it's both good and bad, i use it acctually a lot more than i expected, i use FCP to make the main movies, some really really small movies i'll use this version or the 08 one. Also apple does know it and they did it for a reason, Final Cut Express. if you make a great program that does the same thing than a greater program, why not make the first a bit less to market the second more, does that make sence, i'm not sure if i explained it well

I get a kick out of this only because you said that you can't do the effects like B&W, etc. Yet there is a video a kid uploaded telling you how to do the effects in 08. To me it just sounds like you are use to the other version and are not willing to learn the 08 version.

you can change it to black and white just go to video adjustments which u must go to the clip and click the sunny icon and put the saturation at the lowest.

uhh ull get used to 1movie 08 eventually, even if it can't do all the same things it can do new thigns as well, though your write precise down to seconds editing for music makes it very difficult especially when attempting to sync music to video speech it drives me nuts

iMovie '08 is such a disappointment. Placing music is simply frustrating, no effects is SHIT, how can they possibly call this an 'upgrade'. i have started using WMM because for the first time in a long time, it is much better and easier to use than iMovie. Shame on you apple for destroying such a good program. RIP iMovie.

oh my god i JUST got a macbook pro and i thought i was screwed! it has imovie and im getting final cut pro from my friend but i was just speechless and i thought i was dumb because i couldnt use it. i thought there WAS a timeline and i just couldnt find it and ive been editing things for a while. i used an old version of imovie a long time ago on somebody elses computer and it wasnt that bad i couldnt believe how they could downgrade something so bad. no timeline is crap

damn it! My parents got a MAC and if iMovie sucks, im screwed! I love making AMVs and have been using WMM for years now, and i've come to love it...wth am i gonna do now? -.- this blows.

THANK YOU. I just got a new Macbook and was SO excited 2 b able to use iMovie. I had been using Windows Movie Maker previously, and gee whiz I thought THAT was shitty. First off, iMovie doesn't support AVI or MPEG files, and WMM DOES. So strike 1, iMovie! Strike 2, I opened it up and find myself completely stumped. WHERE IS THE TIMELINE?! This shit is so user friendly that I can't even fricken figure it out n I've used FCP for about a year now @ school! I guess it's back to Windows Movie Maker..

I couldn't agree more.
I too upgraded to imovie 08, and was quite dissatisfied to discover that you can no longer use simple effects on clips, that i could in an "older" version.

the old imovie was excellent, comprehensive and spawned and entire era of movie makers
this new system is the only one that will support my brand new HD camera.
they took out effect, audio placement sucks the timeline is altogether gone it is not designed for movies it was designed for slide shows now i am forced to shoot my movies in low def and edit using the comprehensive version or i can spend a grand on finalcut

Why all the hating on iMovie 08, never had a problem with it, and yes I had iMovie 06 HD, have not felt the need to go back. Probably because I am using Final Cut Pro, but whatever, upgrade to Final Cut Express you won't be sorry, well you would be sorry if you didn't know how to use it, actually I do use iMovie 08 frequently set parameters, quick edits, and make it .XML file and fine tune in Final Cut, never had an issue, but that's just me...

Did u just take snapshots of the screen or did u use iShowU, or any other program that lets u tape wats on the screen. i totaly agree. i was going to do my first you-tube video the other day, and when i went onto iMovie to edit it, well, lets just say a few minutes later i was thinking about throwing the keyboard out the window and shoving the mouse up someones ass. i agree with u 100%

i have ALOT of videos saved on iphoto
but when i try to use them in imovie, none of them show up
and then
when i try to import directly into imovie from a digital camera
an i click import from camera and try to chose a different one then the camera that comes with the mac, i cant
so basicallly i just can use videos in imovie and idk why

totally agree... iMovie 08 is Apple's Vista... sucks balls!!! I thought Apple was a better company with "more intelligent" consumers than microsoft. Now it seems they both suck.. Please OSS masters make an OSS video editor!

it's both good and bad, i use it acctually a lot more than i expected, i use FCP to make the main movies, some really really small movies i'll use this version or the 08 one. Also apple does know it and they did it for a reason, Final Cut Express. if you make a great program that does the same thing than a greater program, why not make the first a bit less to market the second more, does that make sence, i'm not sure if i explained it well

I own a mac due and loved imovie for a second, until I wanted to add a crazy transition. At first i was wow awesome i am gonna add a really nice looking crazy transition! Then i could not add any of them and haven't figured out how to. What is sad i went to school for video! The 08 sounds bad and I will not buy! I see this happen all the time in pc world, i thought mac was better than this! Oh yeah Apple, you really need a save for Youtube feature then you would on your way!

Consider yourself lucky. I bought iLife not looking at the fine print about iMovie'08 not being compatible with Power PC macs. Burned.
Apple really dropped down a few notches with me. Now I'm glad didn't waste time w/ '08.
