My dad used to own the two valco stores(cheap charlies). Grew up walking up and down steinway! Anyone else remember when spiderman did appearances at the toy store?
@keinaan12345 are you talking restaurants or supermarkets? I used to eat at Pizza Palace on Ditmars and 31st street... and i'm not a yuppie. I know Rite Aid closed down, and that Mike's diner has been in Astoria for at least 30 yrs. So, i know what i'm talking about.
Lived Steinway / Broadway late50's did go to P.S. 6, then to Most Precious Blood....apartment above subway entrance...over penny candystore...32-32 Steinway THANKS Hildy2E for a trip back to when times were fine.
@chdimas You're welcome. If you ever go on Facebook there are plenty of fan pages of Astoria. I am a member (fan) of as many as I can find. Maybe we'll hook up there.
I lived in Astoria as a kis from 1980-85 as a kid and what a transformation it has gone through. I don't know if its for better or worse. I miss the old steinway. I also went to Henry David Thoreu elementary
I moved from Astoria about 14 years ago...I think I recognized one store. I grew up from the late 60's to mid 90's and so much has changed. Blimpies, the sporting goods stores, the theatres, wow.......all gone.
I miss the old Steinway. I miss Benkert's Bakery, Woolworth's, Kresge's, Horn and Hardarts, Merkles, Schaller & Weber, Jennie's Pizza, Steven's, Rose's Furniture Store, Steinway Sports & Records, Sokols,Loft's Candy Store, Astoria & Loews Triboro theatres, the Steinway Brauhall. Today, it is too commericialized. I can go anywhere for a McDonalds or a Starbucks. I would love to have the old Steinway back! Remember PS6 was on Steinway too.
My dad used to own the juvenille/bike shop and the toystore down the block. (Anyone remember when superheros and cartoon characters would come visit the toy store and take pictures..circa 1970'early80's...I am trying to chronicle my family's history and some Valco experiences would rule!
if anyone can tell me a website of where i can search for apartments around this area or around Northern Blvd, i would be grateful. i tried searching on Craigslist but no luck. Thanks!
There were a good many realties when I lived in Astoria during the mid-90s. Also, you can easily find announcements at the local churches (so you won't have to pay a realty fee). And, would also check the Village Voice - they probably have rentals for Astoria and Long Island City - good luck with your search!
It used to be a beautiful place to shop. What a dump it is now. So many stores out of business and the storefronts vacant, because the greedy landlords think they can command Manhattan rents here.
y yo pensaba que NY las calles eran un poco mas full o llenas de gente..! en valencia Venezuela las calles son casi que incaminables y son muy parecidas a las de queens claro en queens son mas limpios xD!
I went to LIC, always chilled on Steinway! Great vid!
