Nice tone. I'm trying to decide what pickups to put in my tele, and this video is pretty convincing. Although Becky recommended their twin blade model for my tele. This is the sound I'm looking for though. Do you find it hard to get a good rock sound out of your tele, like do you have to crank the gain higher than you would for a humbucking guitar?
@TheeLoveland87 The rock tones are just fine with these pickups. Maybe not quite as hot as humbuckers, but they certainly get a nice grind especially if you use any sort of boost or overdrive pedal as I often do. I just uploaded a few videos of one of my bands that demonstrates the rock tones pretty well.
Come on, get that pickup selector switch cleaned up! ;) Good OD sound, nice work there. That attenuator is saving the day for certain. Why can't someone do a single KT66 verision of this thing at half the wattage for practice at home? :(
nice playing and sweet guitar. i found that lindy fralin pups work best for me. the "vintage hot" set is very balenced and when u turn the volume down they still let the sparkles through without missing any of the strings "vibes" i guess u could say.
I always like to read what people think about the Lawrence Tele p/u's because I have several Teles & have never heard better p/u's . Especially, the neck p/u is the most musical I have heard. I don't know how else to describe it but it's a huge upgrade from stock. I've yet to hear better. I have 290TL, 290TL-E & 298 TL for the bridges and 280TN in the neck positions. Each bridge p/u has it's own characteristics & I have really become a huge fan of their p/u's. Nice demo !
I've had a 66 for about a month, and I can't get it to do that overdrive tone without a pedal. Is there an attenuator at work there? What kind of speakers are you using?
twelvemeister, I'm too against ripping out original circuits and pickups from expensive gear, but if you spend a lot of time in the studio it may be necessary, if not a must, if it's a noisy environment. I'm putting Kinmans in my American tele, and I hope they'll allow me to record that guitar as it was meant to sound.
But people changing humbuckers in their Les Pauls..why bother? They sound like they should straight out of the box. The rest can be altered with the EQ of the amp. :)
The stock gibson and fender pickups are far from perfect, if they work for you good. But many people want to get the best out of their intruments or perhaps something different that cant be acheived with the stock setup.
No, they are definitely 280/290 pickups. I'm pretty sure they are stacked although I could be wrong on that. Been awhile since I've looked at them outside my guitar. They are not 250. Thanks for the comments!
this is the best sounding guitar i have ever heard, i know dr. z has a lot to do with that, but i was just about to buy some fralin tele blues pickups but this vid changed my mind!!
Nice playing and tone! I have a Bill Lawrence set (SCN's) through Fender, they are almost completely quiet, yet they are true single coils, not stacked HB's.
I am not doubting you, however, if they are, I was lied to by the music store. I was told that by using alternate materials (samarium and cobalt), the pickups were still true single coils but noiseless. Is that wrong?
yeah there wrong but it doesnt matter I had them In my american deluxe tele and I do have a set in my american deluxe strat. I was actually looking for a thicker less tele ish tone so I switched them out of my tele for S.D. quarter pound and an S.D. little 59 but they are great pickups for a tele tone and amazing for the strat which do you have? and it doesnt really matter if they are stacked or single coil or what there made of if they sound good who cares just my two cents
I like the sound of them, they are very versatile, but not vintage enough like I like them, they also aren't very thick sounding. I will probably get a Custom Shop 50's style strat in the next few years, so I'm not gonna change them right now. After I get my new strat though, I might put some HB's in instead. I also might put some PU's from the Eric Johnson sig strat in if I can find them on ebay. Those are nice and thick and vintage-y. Thanks for your opinion.

How are the harmonics?

what exactly are stacked humbuckers?
mercybrkr 2 years ago
Instead of coils being side by side they stacked on top of one another
zacharybroyles 2 years ago
by stacking them, you get the single coil tone without the noise

Bill Lawrence makes some very fine pickups...

Okay very nice, you can play dirty. How about playing something clean?

I'm not sure that the Dr. Z prescribed clean tones

@2derrilicious1 Dr. Z is a very high dollar clean amp, Brad Paisley plays them.

Hey beckanon. What pickup model is the bridge pickup? is that the L-298?
surfco 2 years ago
I think when I bought these years ago the bridge was called a TL-280. Not sure what the model names are now, but I bought directly from Becky.

can you add a clip with the same setup but paying some rhythm chord progressions and no blues soloing?

It's all amp in this clip.

Comeouttoshowthem 2 years ago
Yes, there's an attenuator there....the Weber Mini-Mass. Speakers are a Weber Blue 30w ceramic and a Celestion G12H.

how do you like the cleans of these pickups? Ever try the keystones?

twelvemeister:
Single coil PUs have humming noise by nature that humbuckers don't have. Higher the gain of the amplifier, louder the noise.
Many players love the twanginess of the single coil, with the expressiveness that you don't get from humbuckers.
Bill's single coil replacements are beautifully noise free while giving you the same single coil sound.
