Too many comments from very uneducated people that probably don't even ride. The front tucked as he was tipping it in. Simple deduction to what had happened. Rider, good riding and I'm sure you have improved.
I'm looking to get back on the track sometime, it's been forever.
Deadly wrong advice. All bikes require more front brake than back brake for maximum safe deceleration. On a sport bike the front tire delivers almost all the usable traction on heavy braking and the back tire can actually be completely unweighted and should not have any brake pressure applied to avoid skidding it.
I'm not a pro here.. I believe he was too much on the outside from the apex and braking hard just before to make the turn but was too much outside. He tried turning a bit when comming in and was just on top of that small hill where his front tire lost grip.. pro's correct me if I'm wrong. It's a great lesson for me... I hope no serious injuries are to the rider. Accidents happen to the best of the best of us, so good riding to your limits mate.
how would a steering damper have helped at all. if you look there is no wooble it looks like the front tire locks up for a split second and whips the handle bars to one side causing the crash. no steering damper will stop that.
he was patient in the beginning..but when he caught a couple of riders..he got aggressive and got to the corner too soon and braked too hard.....what he should have done was trust the bike and make the turn.
Props for having the ballsack to ride your duc hard on the track. hope all was well afterwards. But hey look on the bright side, now you don't have to worry about scratching it...you're well beyond that now!
Ahh that sucks but I commend you for taking the bike on thr track. To many pussies wouldnt have. Thats where that bike belongs. I take my 749S to the track a lot too. Everything was looking good just grabbed to much front brake and tucked the front end. The brakes on the 1098 are sick...get it fixed and head back out!
Unless you are Ben Spies, trail braking(braking while turning) is a very advanced skill. Try to get your braking done in a straight line, when you try to turn and brake at the same time, you are really testing the adhesion levels(read: grip) of your front tyre.
Thats my home town track BeaveRun!
Going to be making my own vids (minus crashing) in spring with my white 1198!

unlucky, we fall so that we can learn to pick are selfs back up and we learn from the experiences.
looks like to much front brake while going into the turn, use only a little front brake while going in, mainly back brake.

I agree had nothing to do with a damper.
jlsparky7 2 years ago
Maybe you meant to say frame sliders? The steering damper wouldn't really have helped here.
slowwinnndown06 2 years ago
I cringed because not only do I have the same bike but I suffered the same crash.
I wouldn't say the Brembos lack feel, but they are monstrously powerful.
In my case, I hit some sand, but if you panic on the front brake at all, it is easy to go down as hard and fast as you can see in the video.
The damage(other than a foot peg and gear lever) was only "cosmetic" and plastics. Repair bill? > $5000!
But a gorgeous bike - > 15,000 miles and going strong every day.
Ride safely.
