  • these guys are definition of original.

  • I had so much respect for you guys b4, but now i have even more because of these videos. You guys are forever. THIS is why TOOL is my favorite band. You guys dont give a FUCK about image, money, fame, all that other bullshit. your music is where its at and you guys will always be number one in my book.

  • @Xeroxed96 dam right dude

  • INTERNET KILLED THE VIDEO STAR.

  • thumbs up if the day 10,000 days came out, you had every tool album to date

  • Words only have the power people give them.

  • what did maynard say abt circle jerk? they worked it out? awesome.....

  • This, Maynard, is why I am in the process of buying ALL of Tool's albums :)

  • well why

not adapt and get on itunes?

  • Comment removed

  • being a child of this generation! tool has stuck with me! The one thing that keeps me alive is the sound of Maynard's voice, and the sounds that take over my body and mind! If it weren't for this band I wouldn't be the person I am today! You keep me going and thank you for that!!

  • Justin doesn't talk much...

  • diamond in the muff

  • Ahead of their time..

  • Justin looks bored. (when can we get me fish and chips-chip-cheerio.

  • Danny Carey is a smart person

  • I love MJK, the man has been kissed by the gods and has the Midas touch. I love him in Tool, in APC, Puscifer. Hell, I even love him with green eggs and ham. He will always be one of the best lyricist/musicians of all time. Just sayin'. :)

  • man i love tool. this is one of those instances were u want to say more but theres no words to fully describe it. i just love tool, and maynard. they dont have to be all over tv and magazines and what not, but i hope when they retire, and especially after they die, they arent forgotten because of it. i know i wont forget them.

  • Im never going to illegally download their music. Im just going out, and buying those CD's. Not sharing.

  • drreedindeed go fuck yourself dipshit you can blame the RIAA for everything...seriously if you werent so fucking close-minded youd be doin that. guess thats too much to ask...douchebag.

    Xilaw you are a jackass

fieldingmellish44 blame the record labels for making CDs so fucking expensive when they shouldnt be, THATS the reason why people file share. Tool gotta get paid, yes its not all about the music...but money enters the equation somewhere, its not that hard to understand.

  • these people are my idols they reject all the bullshit in our society and consumerism. good on them, I will not become a mindless drone who spends their life on facebook and buying things they dont need either

  • So you spend your life taking a HUGE risk in music and somehow, someway, you finally make it. And all the Record companies do is try to fuck you in the ass every step of the way.

Fuck you file sharing kiddie douche bags.

  • Boo hoo. Have fun at your winery, poor guy.

  • Greatest musically inclined band period.

  • I was suprised they collaborated with the Guitar Hero game.

  • i know that is anti commerical, im a huge TOOL fan, but they can go on itunes and it will be easier to listen there music and plus there music can more universal

  • Maynard and Tool work for their money. Their money (or the studio's money) is not what they want to work for their money.

If you get what im saying.

  • maynard you're so full of shit, you got money coming out of your ass to last you 3 lifetimes!! douchebag!

  • good fuckin on them for not getting sucked in to all the media bullshit that seems to rule this society

  • Lol skizm is that wat i heard?? what a dick

  • @LooFooKoo it's pronounced as 'skizm'.

  • The entire band is so intelligent and talented, each person in the band is incredible in their own way which makes tool. Thanks alot for uploading this!

  • who ever Tool's haters are...u guys are fucking Retarded

  • @MrMusicman761 people who cant come to terms with other peoples preferences and opinions are the retards. like you

  • @iWentToNam It's not about me hating other peoples preference, its the fact that they dislike the band to a point were they bash them. The fact that they hate on a band that they most likely know so little about. But if they "choose" not to listen to them its fine, but don't hate! That's my Problem Shmuck

  • @MrMusicman761 I know retard is a voice of the past! But still very hurtfull to ppl with special needs children or family memebers! I agree with your post. But being a mother of a special needs child "retard".. I would use other words! He loves tool and great music! Im not trying to be a bitch.. just stating my oppinion!

  • Did Justin even talk during that whole interview?

  • "It's not your to give away"

Take it up with the record companies, Maynard. They realized they couldn't stop the tide, and finally got on board to sell for fair prices through downloads, instead of suing soccer moms.

  • artists only get about 4 cents per album sold, give or take. Tool sells out every show within an hour or two. Thats where the money is....and merchandise sales.

  • These guys have enhanced my life throughout the years. I have received far more from their music than what I paid for it. Thank you TOOL.

  • Yeah so why has the past 10 or so comments been made just to draw attention to themselves? Nobody cares about your opinion. You don't like how Tool would rather sell their music and make a profit instead of giving artwork away, then don't listen to em. Plain and simple. If you can't afford to buy their CD's and you wanna blame somebody, blame yourself for not getting off your lazy ass and getting a job. You know why they want you to give them profit? CUZ THEY DESERVE IT.

  • and if i dont like all their songs (which i tried to buy listening to them) then im not going to waste my money on the whole thing....why the hell would i do that?

but seriously, they are hipocrites to say that we steal all their shit or whatever...which mostly we do...BECAUSE of this reason...if they had their stuff on itunes, i think they would be better off..but nope they have to be big pricks about it....Dont get me wrong, they are a great band....but fuck you Tool :) nuf said

  • @OppositesAttract100 Or you could disreaguard everything I've said unto this point... that's cool too. Tool>All

  • @OppositesAttract100 You're an idiot. Shut the fuck up.

  • ok i sounded stupid sayin i bought their shit on itunes..i intentionally did NOT mean to lie...i always buy band's songs off of itunes if i dont like their whole cd

nd honestly, if they DID put their shit on itunes....i wouldd buy some of their songs to support them instead of jackin it off of limewire like i DID...i know LW is not in use anymore so i use something else..but money is an issue for me so i cant just go out there and buyyy their whoe fucking cd if i dont have the money to do so...

  • their assholes....im sorry but really, i mean for alot of people, like ME...i cant easily get ahold of that album or only want just a couple of songs..dont get me wrong, i love tool but this isnt right really...i mean if they would let itunes sell their music, i think they would actually make MORE money..cuz they seem to be bitching about money being limited for them but c'mon...il just get their shit off of LW like thousands of others r doing cuz of this....

  • @OppositesAttract100 you cant download music from limewire anymore

  • @TheRemixer05 i know...it shut down...it was an example..im just not mentioning what i actually do use to download with

  • @OppositesAttract100 You sir, are a fool. Tool's albums are meant to be listened to as a whole; One spirit, one entity. It's great that you like some tool songs, but take a tool record and listen to it all the way through, let it shine like it was meant to. Also, U R TEH BEST AT WRITTING STUF.

  • @DimeTime924 sir?! and i'm a fool?? Uhm...excuse me for stating my own opinion like a human being. I do not understand how i am a fool because i only like a few songs?? I mean seriously, im not going to buy a whole album if i do not like it...that would be fucking stupid.I don't care what you think about that either. Because YOU are the fool by telling me i can't listen to some of their songs and like them without buying a cd.

  • @OppositesAttract100 Why support the band, right? That would be just too much strain, huh? And i don't think I'm a fool, because I was just stating my own opinion like a human being. I also like that you got riled up and thought that using vulgarity would help get your point across. It didn't by the way. Lastly, I never stated that... Good day sir :)

  • @DimeTime924 you are a fucktard

i do support the band..i buy the songs i like on their itunes. You've got issues there friend. You need a life and stop commenting on my comments and thinking you know everything. It just shows your idiocy

  • @OppositesAttract100 Define "fucktard":

If you buy em on itunes, why'd you say "i mean if they would let itunes sell their music, i think they would actually make MORE money.." and this "..il just get their shit off of LW like thousands of others r doing cuz of this...." Either you lied then, or your lying now, and I'm willing to bet it's the later.

And all I'm saying, is listen to Lateralus 10,000 Days or AEnema all the way through, front to back. It's 10x better that way.

  • @DimeTime924 i wont listen to them if i dont want to....you remind me of some religious freak shoving your religion down my throat to make me believe in something to...so seriously just get over it and move on :)

  • @OppositesAttract100 And I know for a fact tool isn't on itunes...

  • @DimeTime924 youre right..ive never bought their shit on any site hahaha...i did use limewire though for their songs i did like...which is like 4 of them but whatev :) lol

  • @DimeTime924 isn't that the point of any album? not just tool's?? think before you give us your opinions

  • it's a cut throat industry and only the strongest and the best will survive!

  • TOOL is unique. They know this-so do their fans. I applaud them for resisting the mediocrity of the music industry. They produce THEIR music without the fanfare, create without outside influence, and the results are why I am a HUGE fan. If TOOL sold out, then they would have ended up sounding like the rest of the SHIT we have been listening to since Cobain died/Seattle became a History Channel subject. Long live TOOL! I'll leave my CDs to my grandkids. Maybe they will use the same model?

  • Tool is like a new age Rush. With their ideals and everything.

  • @b03y

Good call...and it is thought by many that Danny Carey is the "heir apparent" to Neil Peart. Those two should do a double album together.

  • I love tool but Maynard is a massive hypocrite

  • @MikaelDay explain

  • @MikaelDay agreed

  • I know that your post is an old one Ploatic, but you're absolutely right he does give 100% on everything for that band. Well TOOL themselves do 100% although when you hear them, tou can tell it's Tool but there's always some new and interesting that they apply to their existing sound. I Think 10,000 days was a class album every song is decent and not commerialised. And ofcourse you'd want to get paid for any work that ya do ; )

  • What if I buy used cds.The only reason I buy new is to support the bands I like. What about what you believe in and not what you can get for free.If they make money then you'll hear more."I'm the man and he's the man and your the man as well........"

  • i dont get it they dont want to be to famous so they dont wanna put their music on itunes???????that would sick if they did:(

  • I think it sucks that they don't let us buy their stuff on Napster or Itunes. What's up with that? I'm willing to pay. I don't want CD's, I hate them and they aren't environmentally friendly, to boot.

Come on Maynard, get your ass on Napster so I can blast your shit on my stereo!

  • @brian8793 Because the album is the full work of art, you can't just buy one star in Van Goghs "starry night"

The piece is the songs all together in order and in CD quality, and the artwork that you can pick up and look at and flip through the pages and look through the 3D glasses.

And eco friendly my ass. Whats your computer plugged into?

  • @dourcynicbass It's ok. Tool's music is evil.

  • I find it strange that Tool are so anti-commercial and maintain that their music isn't a product and it's all about the art, while at the same time being concerned about kids sharing the music with their friends and cutting into their profits.

  • @fieldingmellish44

IMO their anti-commercialism probably comes from early on in their career when the record companies were pushing them to write shorter songs with a beat that matched the pop-rock scene. So although they need money to survive and continue their careers, they seemed to have a determined mindset early on to do it their own way.

  • @fieldingmellish44 yeah who needs money to live they're hipocrytes

  • @fieldingmellish44 You have rent to pay ? You have bills ? Feul costs, car payments ?

    whatever else ?

So the choice is, let 5000 people share it on Napster and loose $4000, or not let them do that and get $800 each to pay for the above ?

Commercialism has nothing to do with it.

I firmly believe there is NOTHING in Tool, APC or Puscifer that is commercial on any level.

But why let your own hard work be spread for free ?

  • @fieldingmell

It's not strange. All you have to do is keep in mind what the end result will be. The more things go that way (sharing free) the more the larger record companies - who have the capital, as opposed to actual artists who don't - can mass market and distribute one commercial act after another. This undermines the entire premise of art. Think back to what it meant to buy someone's record or tape before this digital age. It wasn't a mindless click of a button. It meant something.

  • @fieldingmellish44 they want to make money for working so fucking hard, man.

  • @fieldingmellish44

In my opinion by anti commercial they mean that they dont follow the standard procedures and general rules of the music industry / record labels, they do what feels right to them. However of course they wont want people dloading there music, they worked fucking hard for it and its their art.

Think about it, if you made something that you were really proud of you wouldn't want anyone steeling it.

cant expect them to give shit for free even if they say it aint commercial IMO

  • @fieldingmellish44

He says something like "medium level bands have to sell ~500,000 copies just to break even." They are well over that mark and by making the statement after being ASKED I think they are more concerned about WHO/What kind of musicians are getting the opportunity in the music industry.

You chose to see it that way but- It's not like they're out there protesting like Metallica, suing software developers...

  • @fieldingmellish44

The point is that the art is the product. They do not bask in the hype like most modern artists.

  • @fieldingmellish44 - have you ever had someone distribute your art as their own? It feels like you've been raped. It's not all about profit or the bottom line but artistic integrity and creative freedom. A band or any entity as brilliant as these guys deserve their due. Period.

  • Comment removed

  • @fieldingmellish44 I get what your saying but it's a bit of a catch 22. making music is their job and I am one of few people that believes if you like a band that much you should support them and BUY their music not just download it. I agree with tool, sure it's about music as art but at the end of the day it's also their job and they're also trying to make a living. it would be naive to think a band didn't want to make money and there's STILL a difference between making money and selling out

  • @fieldingmellish44 You mean Tool wants to make money. What the fuck! You mean they are concerned with there livelihood. That's unreal man. I used to think it was enough that they passed on so many money making opportunity's by exploiting them selves......but now, thanks to you "fieldingmellish44" I realize, they are not worthy until they allow them selves to go completely broke living on the street.

  • @fieldingmellish44 There is quite a difference between letting your art become altered and tainted by marketers, and receiving payment for your work and time. I see absolutely no hypocrisy there, in fact Tool is evidence that you can still achieve that very balance.

  • I download TOOL's music through limewire and other sources.... I should be ashamed of myself :(

    if only I knew....

  • @edgarshere

Don't you worry I do too

but I end up buying the record.. my computer is a mess

and their records are always the most creative little things... art objects :3

    ^^

  • great band. enough said

  • maximum respect

  • This is exactly what music on the radio lacks today. Soul, passion, integrity, and substance. There's only one word to describe Tool and that is REAL.

  • tool are even better than n64

  • My generation's Pink Floyd

  • wait maybe during this interview the economy wasnt as bad as it is now. so thats why we still have sites like limewire cuz its either pay the bills and buy food OR go out to a tool concert. most of us dont have the option of doing both. im worried about them. i really want them to continue sharing their art with us

  • @metallichika Thats the sad thing of our society at the moment, but we have to say that a cd is like $10-15, which is nothing, but they still do a lot of money in tours, I'm sure that an stadium filled with fans brings the money to do at least 3 records more, I don't know, I've never assist a Tool Concert and I don't think I will, but I'm sure tours are the ones that give the big buck, cd's are just for us to know them.

  • @Hacker506 oh yeah, you do have a point there. but i really would love to see them live. some of the bootleg videos i find here are okay but dammit i'd rather see them live! lol from now on, i'm going to try and save up so i can go to a tool concert, next time they tour minneapolis. heehee

  • @metallichika Imagine how lucky you're, they are already doing some tours at you can see in their site, but I'm in Costa Rica... :@ Not 1 opportunity unless I get into drug dealing or stealing shit.

  • @Hacker506 shit that sux, i'm sorry. someday, either they'll go to costa rica or you save up and move to the states, i hope you get a chance to see them live. i think every tool fan should have the chance to see them live atleast once or twice in their lives

  • so i guess if anyone likes any band it couldnt hurt to make a little donation by buying a cd or buying the album on itunes. just so they have the funding to keep making music. while there are artists in the music industry who ARE greedy and just do it for the sake of fame and money, tool genuinely enjoy the music and art they share with people, even tho it can be really tedious. but in the end its very rewarding

  • Wait I am still not sure why being on iTunes makes you non artistic. Sounds like bullshit. Come on that's like saying using cash is better than a debit card. I love Tools music, its amazing so I understand somewhat the umph. I want the labels but I am lazy. I don't want to go to the crapy CD stores. SO..... Keep up the great work.

  • Thanks

  • back in the 80s we all taped records, maynard, lars, allen, you know kieth allens girl, they all whine yet they all taped songs, everyone did, fucking hipacrits.

  • strike that Aenima is their best album i think.

  • wow thats crazy. I never really thought about it that much, but bands really do get screwed with their music cuz everyone just burns the cds or goes on limewire. I really hope they get rid of limewire. I use it as much as everyone else, but the bands need to make some fucking money.

  • omg WTF!?

Now i can't have tool on my iPod.

  • Rip it from the CD.

  • LATERALS IS THE BEST TOOL ALBUM EVER!

  • correction all tool albums are the best albums ever

saying that will never get old..

  • dude ur totally right. though it is their easily best album, Aenima, 10000 days, and Undertow are all incredible as well.

  • yeah i love lateralus album too.

  • Hell yeah it is. Still I find it hard to pick favorites their new one 10,000 Day's is amazing.

  • eh i think 10,000 days for some reason didnt have all the spark there that lataralus and aenima had....you know what i mean

  • @thetoecutterr id go as far as saying one of the best albums ever

  • @thetoecutterr why do you think that?

  • @thetoecutterr wrong. best album ever. by anyone. anywhere. even places that aliens live. soooo... yeah

  • The band is called Tool, not Maynard, embrace what they have to offer..

  • What an inspiration!

  • 5:56

Little did they know Adam jones would later appear on the cover of Guitar World magazine with kirk hammet. But that was just to discuss adam's awesome guitar playing style. Tool rock!

  • Maynard is right..of course music and art is never about the money, but when you spend your life in the studio,HOW else can you possible provide money for your family? Maynard isn't asking for the money as if he was asking to win the loto, but think of it, he can't be spending, lets say, 7-8 hours in the studio, then go to another place to work. All he wants, is money to survive, because every tool/APC fan knows that maynard gives 100% of his energy in their songs and isnt greedy for the money

  • @Ploatic I agree with you 1 gazillion percent. well said :)

  • Comment removed

  • by not having an image, they've still created an image

  • they are my favorite band because they say what they believe and feel, and they don't fear anyone's opinion. All of their songs are great, they all have a point. They don't write a dumb song about some random chick or some stupid dream, they point out what they really think goes on. They want to show people what is going on today, and they show us the results of human ignorance. I love these guys, they are not phonies, they have one thing to describe them. . . TOOL

  • Also I find his disrespect of other bands arrogant and disgusting. If he only knew how hard it is for people who are not channeling energy from alternate dimensions then he would say "to each his own" and have a more humble approach to the question. And yes I said alternate dimension because every style of music is built off of previous genres but their music was an immaculate conception of energy and pefection that is not of this world.

  • Who Asked for your opinion?

  • Although Maynard has ascended on multiple levels with his art and the emotion therein, I found it disheartening that he cant separate himself from one of the most problematic plagues of our world...MONEY. He speaks of the "kids" sharing their music as if they owe him something. A true artist only wants to be recognized for bringing beauty into the world not an imaginary sense of prosperity. I suppose nearly 20 years of having your butt kissed can skew your values.

  • I think it's more looking back at bands initial financial struggle. It seems more to help other bands who are now in that position.

Maybe his values have changed, but I don't believe he's as worried about his money as you think.

  • Dude, Maynard is speaking about the "kids" as if they owe him something, because they DO. If you own their music, you owe them money. He isn't separated from the "problematic plague" of money as much as you are... Tool is simply asking for their fare share of reward for the art the create, instead of having freaking morons steal it all the time.

  • you are missing the point. Artists do not create art for money, When money stops you from sharing your art with the world then you cease to be an artist.

  • They still have to care to some degree because it's how they make their living... I'm guessing you don't provide for your family solely on being in band. And neither do I, because I'm 15... but the guys from Tool do, so it's rather a legitimate concern.

  • Life isn't about money, especially when they made enough to retire about 15 years ago.

  • So.....I'm no longer an artist. Money has definitely stopped me from sharing my art- BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD THE MATERIALS! No matter who you are, the fact is that it takes money to create the art. If they just gave away their music, then eventually the music would be no more, for the simple reason of lack of funding. They deserve their due for what they've done, just the same as anyone else.

  • However, I do think that if Maynard wants to whine about money, then they need to find a way to ensure that they're fans don't get scammed just because they want to hear them live. I had to pay 150 bucks for 2 tix because they use ticketmaster who then sells to online vendors (legal scalpers). What's worse is that I paid that much, and the venue was crap so the sound wasn't that great. They need to make sure to give what's fair before complaining that they don't get what they're owed.

  • Makes me feel like burning a few copies and passing them out to teenagers....but I'm not vindictive.

And yes, they can ensure fans don't get screwed as much on concert tix- Trent Reznor does.

  • im sure he didnt mean that at all. first of all, he was talking on a general basis meaning not just tool but all bands are effected by music sharing. i mean metallica actually sued! hes just being realistic and not fake as hes always been and will be.

  • I would give Maynard every dime he has made x2 if I could write a song half as good as the worst Tool song.

  • Slagtheangry: the "narrator" is british, first of all, 2nd - LaterALAs and SchiZAM are pronounced correctly...but really, don't you think you should watch the video and appreciate it for what it represents (4 artists that explain their reasons for what they are creating, that share their ideas and inner feelings and thoughts with YOU) rather than post a really stupid and unnecessary comment about the "narrator"? think about it...

  • lol "Later-AL-us" and "Skizum" I don't believe the narrator is a listener.

  • I think this is the only remaining band that does music not for marketing (a great ex: Hannah Montana wtf?!) but for the sake of music and art and I really appreciate that. But they also have to earn money.

  • oh no my friend there are so many more bands out there that do music for the art ex 1 mogwai ex 2 sigur ros i can one all day you should look them up they are not like tool but they are good

  • Actually I love those bands. I was going to see sigur ros live this year in Spain but the lack of money prevented me to go.

  • oh that would have been cool to see and you are the first perosn i meet that listens to mogwai ,sigur ros and tool haha

  • What an incredibly arrogant statement. I do believe a lot of bands sell out to marketing but there are QUITE a few who don't. Tool is one of them, but you are simply not looking if you think they are the ONLY ones.

  • Of course there are others. I was just making a statement.

  • If you've made a rational decision about where you live, what you eat, or who you vote for, then share it. If not, don't share it. That's how humans reach towards reason. By searching out and emulating those people and ideas they like... No reason not to plumb artists you admire for ideas... I know Maynard has good ideas politically... The issue is one of control. I agree with them about that: noone should have a right to control anyone's view of you and your life or art...

  • Amazing interview, They are such a smart group of guys with immense musical talent.

  • if you want to listen to shitty, nonsoulful music, put some beyonce on, haha... these guys represent, through their music, our human nature, as it is...so why not explore our soul, our mind, all that we can think of, but listen to stupid and senseless mumbling like miss beyonce and many, many others? i respect Tool for what they represent, for their effort to bring the music forward and to speak for our soul

  • excellent interview.

  • "Don't you know I sold my soul to make a record -- dipshit? Then you bought one!"

  • did anyone hear justin talk at all?

  • yer in part one

  • i thought someone said 2010

  • what maynard says on 4:47 is true

  • put the cd on your itunes account duh

  • so ur demanding Tool to sell out to napster and all that other shit just so life can be more convienent for YOU? your so selfish. givem a break, they went thru alot to make those albums, ALOT more than the avg. band so just accept their decisions. but atleast you bought all their albums, i respect that.

  • next album comes 2011... I bet
