You have the right idea. It is called a 'barber chair' when the tree splits lengthwise and becomes airborne on a springpole. Boring to build your hinge eliminates this danger on leaners, and keeps all of the trees you cut stationery until you cut the backstrap. It makes falling a tree much less stressful.
Do you use the technique for most of your felling, or just the more difficult ones? Lately, I've taken a liking to climing the tree, putting a line up high and then pulling it with a come-along. Seems like this technique would add a considerable amount of saw time (but proably faster than my method).
