I'm not sure.. most of the Gamo guns are identical except for the aesthetics. Now they have a new class of guns that is doing very well.. Sort of in between the 1000 fps and the 1650 fps.. I'm testing a Bull Whisper Extreme (1400 fps) and it is awesome.

I've been asking Gamo for guns and they've been slow to respond.. we'll see. I know from speaking to them that the VH HP has been doing well for them. At that price point it may be worth a try?
@AirGunWeb, I like your reviews, but you might want to consider using a different backdrop. Somehow, guns don't seem to mix well with a swing set (kids' play area). I know there were no kids around, but it's the idea. :-) Maybe it's just me.
How can you expect accuracy out of this extremely harsh recoiling air rifle? For 500 bucks you better get a nice Weihrauch HW97 or Beeman R9. Not that hard hitting but at least you are hitting your target. My forecast is that a spring breakage on this Gamo is coming after a very low shot count...
And shooting these PBAs out of a high powered spring rifle with f**k up the pistol seal and spring in the long run.
All very true.. too much power, trying to do too much with a spring gun. I'd rather hit my target accurately at 800 fps than miss it every time at 1200.

Try the .22 cal Benjamin Trail NP.. keep your shots inside 20 yards. If you need to go past 20 yards.. then look to the Walther Talon in .22. Stay away from the .177's they don't have the same accuracy and power.. generally speaking.
I DIDN NOT SEE OR HEAR ANY REAL INFO ON THE GUN OTHER THAN YOU GOT SMALL HANDS AND THE GUN IS MADE IN ENGLAND. ENGLAND??? WTF. FOR THE MONEY, I CAN JUST ABOUT BUY A BIG BORE AIR RIFLE FROM SAM YANG. AND ACTUALLY HUNT . I AM NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE SO CALLED REVIEW. YOU SHOWED NO ACTUAL HITS ON THE TARGET. AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT BY THE STATEMENT ABOUT THE RECOIL? EVEN WATCHING YOU SHOOT THE GUN I SAW NO RECOIL. WTF. NO, IT'S NOT WORTH 500 DOLLARS.
did you watch the whole review? You must not have.. but that is ok.. I also did not recommend this gun in the end.. It has too much recoil and is not very accurate. You may want to actually watch the entire review before posting comments like you have.
I have the same gun and I use RWS Meisterkugeln Pellet .177 cal - 500 ct
I consistently hit nickels and pennies taped to a target at 22 yards. I think using a pellet between 8-9.5 grains is perfect.
I have used all crossman pellets and gamo and my gun threw them all over the place. I even went heavy with the beeman silver arrow. It was not till I used RWS super domes which gave me groupings the size of a quarter.(this could be better but human error) The RWS Meisterkugeln were the winners for
I'd be curious to know what velocity you are getting.. The first one that I tested was terrible then started to get better, even pleasant. Then I tested it and it was shooting 950 fps.. The spring had failed (partially). I sent it back to Gamo for repair. It shoots fast now.. but not accurately. Do you get the supersonic "crack" with those pellets?
@AirGunWeb I will have to get a crono and let you know. If you have a suggestion on a good one that is not too expensive, I would be glad to let you know what fps I am getting. I do believe I am still getting the cracking noise, but it could be the wooden backstop getting pounded by the pellet. I have put around 600-900 rounds through this gun so far. I would say the first 400 were very frustrating.
I notice that the CPHP shot at a high 1130fps in the gamo hunter extreme,but the walther talon shot the CPHP at a high 1145fps in your walther review rick.Both guns has high velocity,but I gotta go with the walther over gamo.
I really like this gun because of the velocities. 1130 fps with a lead pellet is amazing. That will put down almost any animal in the woods. BUT! The groups are terrible! For a 500$ gun it should shoot great groups. I bought a Reminton 700 Varmint in .308 for 450$. For all you air gunners out there that's a great gun and a great price. I just don't understand why anyone would spend that kind of money for a gun that shoots these groups. Great review though!!
It is a hobby sport so money and "making sense" aren't really in the equation when people buy these guns. I agree that a $500 airgun should do much better in the accuracy department however. The trigger has a very long and heavy 2nd stage.. This makes it tough to keep on target.
(the other reason folks buy airguns.. is that you can generally shoot them in your back yard.. That's not an with firearms most of the time)
Rick would you choose an RWS .22 1000fps 350 p Magnum or the Hunter Extreme...I feel as though I'm choosing between more power, vs more reliability, accuracy, and quality.
In the past you have said RWS is your favorite go to gun. So would you choose it over this Gamo for small game hunting like Turkeys etc ?
I would pick the RWS over the Gamo.. on another note.. make sure that you check your local hunting restrictions. Most states regulate what you can and can't shoot with an airgun, even on private property.
look at it this way.. people get hit with a 100 fast ball and walk it off on the way to 1st base.. how would you like to get hit with a 9 pound bowling ball going 100 miles an hour.. even at 50 miles an hour.. it would most likely kill you. That is the difference between a light pellet and an regular pellet..
I understood the question.. I wanted to deal more with the logic of the question.. would a 4 grn pellet go 1600 fps.. maybe, but I have to ask the question.. why?
I was wondering if you could do a review on the Gamo hunter extreme .25. Also I would love to know what you think about me getting the Benjamin NP XL 1100. I was only going to use it for target shooting, pest control, (pesky house sparrows, and other non protected birds and mammals), and small game hunting (jack rabbits, fox, quail, etc.). Thanks -Cheers
The GHE has been discontinued.. I want to get a .25 to complete my collection.. but I'm not sure I'll be able to. The regular Trail NP is a better rifle and a better fit. The NP XL has too much recoil to be practical. It takes a lot of technique to shoot well. The Trail NP on .22 on the other hand is very accurate, easy to shoot, and does very well out to 50 yards.
I'm not sure that is it 1/2 the cocking effort.. having just tested on a while back.. it was pretty stiff to cock.. BUT one reason that it may be easier to cock is that the talon has the extra barrel length which will give you more leverage thus making it easier to cock.
I've not tested the SOCOM extreme.. my guess is that the Hunter Extreme is better made. Also it is being discontinued. I have it in .22.. it is better in .22. I'd love to have one in .25
The original wood and steel Hunter Extreme is going away.. the Socom extreme is taking its place. I've talked to gamo about doing a review of one.. I'm working with the CFR right now. Maybe once I'm done with that they will send one to me.
"foot pounds of energy" FPE is more important than FPS. FPS just says how fast it's moving. FPE tells you how much energy the mass of the pellet combined with velocity puts on the target. The general convention is that it takes 6 FPE to humanely put down a typical squirrel.
@ThePhan7em wouldnt higher speed be a bennifit for an air rifle since it fires such a light pellet? idk but added velocity to a small or light pellet seems to me to more effective.
You'd think that.. until you needed to actually his something accurately. There is "tin can" accurate and then there is "real" accuracy. The light weight pellets can hit a tin can at 10 yards sure... but at 20 it will be hit and miss. The heavier pellets are more accurate in general and accuracy is always more important than velocity.
At the end I gave gamo to my friend who was vice champion of Europe in 4.5mm. He just said "is this a joke ".Rifle is still in warranty, so I returned them and wait what will they say. I sincerely hope that they will return my money.
I hear you. I had to have my repaired from gamo.. When it first came in it shot hard.. then it slowed considerably.. turned out that the spring broke and the seal was bad.. When I got it back it shot hard again, but has never been very accurate from the bench. From the shoulder I do ok while hunting..
Hi Rick, I must report that I am disappointed with this rifle. When I wrote you the first time, I got a pretty good group at 30 m. But suddenly, I noticed that I could not hit anything over ~ 20. I went to the shooting range, and tested rifle. The result was like in hidden camera :) . At 25m I got a group about 20cm in diameter :))) hits were all over the place. At 10m I couldn't get 5cm group .
You should look at my TX200. With the scope I've got close to $800 into that gun. It is all relative. Some people spend thousands on their car stereo, or thousands on video games.. Airguns are a hobby like any other. They never make financial sense.. People do it for fun..
Why do some people spend 4,000 for a dbl barrel shotgun when a mosberg pump cost about $400? Or why do some spend $1500 on an AR-15 when you can get a 17HMR for about $300? What may NOT make sense to you, or your wallet, does not mean that it does not appeal or make sense to someone else. Hobbies NEVER make financial sense. I LOVE shooting my firearms, but I've found that I LOVE shooting my airguns more.. But that is just me.
(you only need to post once.. I'll get to your question...) Regarding velocity.. these big magnum guns in .177 don't shoot well.. they all fall apart as the pellets transition over the speed of sound threshold. They may shoo that fast but not accurately past a certain range (say 30 yards or so) As for the warranty on the RWS, you'll need to check the site.. I don't believe "money back" is part of the warranty.
im having a problem sighting in my gamo hunter and it seems that when i rest on a sandbag and shoot, it looks like my jumps when i shoot and it hits way high but when i shoot it free handed (not using a rest) it shoots right on but im having trouble sighting it in because i cant aim steadily enough to completely sight it in. do you think you can help or tell me a solution? if you can, please reply back. Thanks, Jake
You are seeing the typical issues with spring guns.. You need to rest it on your hand rather than sandbag. Then you can mimic the same hold from the shoulder once you've adjusted on the bench. You can look up "artillery hold" and see some information about it. That is what you need to learn to be consistent.
Try using the Field target position where you sit down and rest your gun on the arm and the arm on your knee. This will get best results. Search for "Field target position" where this shooting technique is described in detail.
that may be the issue.. I had good results with this gun while hunting in TX.. it seemed to shoot better from the shoulder.. I was also 4600 FT up so the velocity was down by about 100 fps.
Hello Rick, Ok so I have watched several of your videos, and I am curious to what you would say is the best .22 pellet rifle for under 500.00 bucks. I am in the market and would like to make an informed decision.
There are a few. My personal favorite (in spring guns) would be the RWS 350 magnum... from there the Walther Falcon Hunter with a gas ram, Benjamin Trail NP XL is certainly on the list too, The Benjamin Trail NP, RWS Model 34
Hope that helps.. the 350 mag, when they are in stock, or the 350 Feuerkraft is really the way to go.
I heard that using low grain pellets in a 1000+ fps break barrel can seriously screw up your main spring. I can even hear the mainspring slam against the end of the shaft in your video. SO i advise only 9+ grain pellets.
that's a little too conservative for me.. It depends on the gun. For example.. using 7.0 grn hobbies in a GHE doesn't make sense.. they are too light. Now they are fine for a Beeman R7 which is a much slower shooting rifle. You have to be careful with "blanket" statements because the don't always apply.
hi rick i am still looking for a gun, only a break barrel. i need something 920 FPS or over and i need it to be very accurate. I hunt rabbits birds and fox.
I did test heavier pellets.. nothing worked in this gun. I have dozens of different types of pellets. I test everything until I get the best pellet.. then I shoot the review. Nothing shot well in this rifle from the bench.. that was the bottom line.
I'll add it to my request list and see if I can get one coming. It will be up to the vendors. I'm more than happy to do the review if I can get one sent to me.
Big cat.. the TF79 is a co2 gun and will only get about 60% to 70% of velocity of the big cat... I'd skip the PBA pellets.. they are not very well made.
I just shot my Marauder .22 yesterday. I love that gun. my favorite gun for sure. Shooting it is effortless. I was shooting nickle sized groups at 50 yards. out-shooting "real" guns down at the range. if you can get a used scuba tank and have easy access to high pressure air you'll be better off.. if not, the pump will work. I get about 300 to 400 shots per scuba tank. that would be about 1500 to 2000 strokes on the hand pump.
rather take the RWS 350 mag in .22.. The 460 is not a good gun and neither is the Gamo Hunter Extreme in .22. As for cracking the sound barrier it is really something that you want to avoid. the .177 shoots way over the sound barrier and that is why you get the crack. Unfortunately it also causes instability with nearly all pellets. Using heavier pellets helps get the velocity down to something more practical.
guns generally slow down.. not speed up. Gamos go for about 5000 shots or so.. most spring guns need a good tune up now and then. There are a lot of folks out there that provide this service. A good place to check is the GTA forum.
I have a nice 10/22 thank you. Actually, I have airguns that out shoot a 10/22. I even out shot a rem 700 in .223 at 50 yards with my Marauder .25 cal. I get this question a lot. I like airguns, I like firearms. I like shooting all kinds of each. And with airguns, I can shoot them in my backyard, while firearms I have to drive to a range to shoot.
the only reason i dont think its worth 500 because the walther falcon hunter in 22 produces 22-30 fpe. and do u reccomend the walther falcon hunter in 22 or 25
Last one that I got was made in England.. "assembled" in the USA. That was the .22 cal version. I never did the review of that one because I could not get it to group. I gave it to a buddy of mine to shoot for a while to see if he could get it to break in. Maybe we'll finally get it to shoot right.
I found the RWS 350 Magnum Striker Combo to be a much better gun in this class.
ok i want an airgun that kills small varmits medium varmits and small game. i want it to be really accurate and powerful something that could kill a squirel , a crow or a rabbit in one shot . should i get a 177 or a 22 please help
Way over priced for what it is. Totally ridiculous to pay near $500 for this air gun. $150 yes, but definitely NOT $500.00. May as well go buy a good quality Remmington 30.06 hunting rifle for this kind of price. NO THANKS-
I hear this a lot. While I would not pay $500 for this gun... I just paid almost $600 for my Beeman R9. This is a hobby like all others. Hobbies do not make financial sense. People spend exorbitant amounts on over/under shotguns when a $300 pump 12 gauge will do the job. Airguns are the same. I can shoot my beeman right at my house all day without bothering anyone and for pennies compared to my AR15 which I have to take out to the range.
hey, rick, i am a bow hunter and tryin to take care of squirels with a bow is quite hard as my arows are 12$ a piece, any ways im in the market for a pest control gun thats powerfull acurate and can shoo long distances such as 100 yards any sugestions? thanks
100 yards is a near impossible shot with an airgun, at least from duplication perspective. You can always make the occasional lucky shot at that range. You need a .22 cal that pushes 900 FPS or more. That puts you in the RWS 350 mag or PCP rifle range. The 350 is an 80 yard gun for sure (with enough practice). The .22 marauder may get you to 100 yards maxed out, expect 4"/5" groups or larger at that range.
I bought 1 of these gammo extremes the first 1 i shot maybe 10 times the scoop fell
off stripped the dove tail right off from the recoil i brought it back to OLD English gun shop they replaced the gun with another i would afto agree they don't shot all that well i should have gotten my money back and walked away know iam stuck with a arm braker
see i got my hunter extreme in .25 caliber and the thing is beast.i got 1/2 inch group at 150 yards. you said close to 500 for a .177 i got mine for $529.95 USD. the bigger caliber is exellent. it is better in a bigger caliber like you said
ok so im looking to buy an air rifle as u said the hunter extreme is not the best as i expected but what are your thoughts for an acurate airgun and decent velocity
best bang for the buck in my book right now is the RWS 350 mag in the striker combo from PyramydAir. Gun, Scope, Special mount and rings, hardshell case for $405 in .22 and $385 in .177. Prices may changes, but for now that is a great deal.
Is it true that pellets loose significant accuracy above 1100-1200 fps? I've heard that the only reason to buy a 1200+ fps rifle is so that you can push super heavy pellets in the 850-950 fps range. Basically, I've been told that for accuracy, you have to keep the pellets subsonic...your thoughts?
100% true. When pellets get near or just over the sound barrier, they destabilize and often begin to tumble. You often see it with PBA ammo and shooting targets. The pellet will enter sideways and you have a perfect profile of the pellet in the paper. This extreme shot better at 4600 feet as the velocity was lower.
you could just buy a ruger 10/22 for that price but still great review.

very true.. but it is about the sport.. not the practicality of the purchase price. Hobbies are never cheap..

Would a 4.0 grain hit near 1600 FPS?
lambchops1493 7 months ago
@lambchops1493
maybe.. but realize that power and accuracy decrease the lighter the pellet
Rick
AirGunWeb in reply to lambchops1493 (Show the comment) 7 months ago
@lambchops1493
look at it this way.. people get hit with a 100 fast ball and walk it off on the way to 1st base.. how would you like to get hit with a 9 pound bowling ball going 100 miles an hour.. even at 50 miles an hour.. it would most likely kill you. That is the difference between a light pellet and an regular pellet..

460WeatherbyMag 7 months ago
@460WeatherbyMag

How come the Walther Talon Magnum has almost the same velocity but 2x less the cocking affort??
TheWayne8698673 9 months ago
@TheWayne8698673
I'm not sure that is it 1/2 the cocking effort.. having just tested on a while back.. it was pretty stiff to cock.. BUT one reason that it may be easier to cock is that the talon has the extra barrel length which will give you more leverage thus making it easier to cock.

what does fpe mean. i see people say "this gun shoots 20 fpe" and i think to myself what does fpe mean
airgunshooter52 10 months ago
@airgunshooter52
"foot pounds of energy" FPE is more important than FPS. FPS just says how fast it's moving. FPE tells you how much energy the mass of the pellet combined with velocity puts on the target. The general convention is that it takes 6 FPE to humanely put down a typical squirrel.

AirGunWeb in reply to ThePhan7em (Show the comment) 10 months ago
@ThePhan7em wouldnt higher speed be a bennifit for an air rifle since it fires such a light pellet? idk but added velocity to a small or light pellet seems to me to more effective.
random5495 in reply to ThePhan7em (Show the comment) 10 months ago
@random5495

I hear you. I had to have my repaired from gamo.. When it first came in it shot hard.. then it slowed considerably.. turned out that the spring broke and the seal was bad.. At 10m I couldn't get 5cm group .
djdelevic 10 months ago
@djdelevic
I wonder if the spring or the seal gave out. You can try cleaning the barrel per chance it is just leaded up and that is why your accuracy is gone.

Hobbies NEVER make financial sense. will the rws 350 magnum shoot a 7 to 8 grain pellet 1250 fps or not . and does it really have a full money back life time warrenty ?
emma07091 1 year ago
@emma07091

Thanks, Jake
tacokiller101 1 year ago
@tacokiller101
Hey there,
You are seeing the typical issues with spring guns.. You need to rest it on your hand rather than sandbag. Then you can mimic the same hold from the shoulder once you've adjusted on the bench. You can look up "artillery hold" and see some information about it. That is what you need to learn to be consistent.
Cheers
Rick
AirGunWeb in reply to tacokiller101 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@tacokiller101
Try using the Field target position where you sit down and rest your gun on the arm and the arm on your knee. This will get best results. Search for "Field target position" where this shooting technique is described in detail.
bfgguns in reply to tacokiller101 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@bfgguns
that may be the issue.. I had good results with this gun while hunting in TX.. it seemed to shoot better from the shoulder.. I was also 4600 FT up so the velocity was down by about 100 fps.

andrewg367 1 year ago
@andrewg367

Rick
AirGunWeb in reply to emma07091 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
I heard that using low grain pellets in a 1000+ fps break barrel can seriously screw up your main spring. I can even hear the mainspring slam against the end of the shaft in your video. SO i advise only 9+ grain pellets.
lambchops1493 1 year ago
@lambchops1493
I've heard the same thing.. I wonder why gamo pushes their lead free stuff so much....?
Rick
AirGunWeb in reply to lambchops1493 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@AirGunWeb even lead pellets under 9 grains cause too much main spring damage. Thats why I only use high quality pellets.
lambchops1493 in reply to AirGunWeb (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@lambchops1493
that's a little too conservative for me.. It depends on the gun. For example.. using 7.0 grn hobbies in a GHE doesn't make sense.. they are too light. Now they are fine for a Beeman R7 which is a much slower shooting rifle. You have to be careful with "blanket" statements because the don't always apply.
Cheers.

AirGunWeb in reply to Fingerboarder83 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
Why - O - why would you NOT test ANY heavier pellets?
You had a gun which was making 1100+ average real-world FPS with REAL LEAD pellets... and the heaviest ammo you tested was 8 grains?
You needed some Beeman Silver Arrows, or at LEAST Kodiaks. I am curios as to what the EJ 16 grainers would have done as well.
weaselunit123 1 year ago
@weaselunit123
I did test heavier pellets.. nothing worked in this gun. I have dozens of different types of pellets. I test everything until I get the best pellet.. then I shoot the review. Nothing shot well in this rifle from the bench.. that was the bottom line.

@tobysteve22
Rick
p.s. the R9 and TX200 would be my next favs.
AirGunWeb in reply to tobysteve22 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
@chi916
rather take the RWS 350 mag in .22..
Rick

GenerationsOutdoors 1 year ago
@GenerationsOutdoors

AirGunWeb in reply to CRazyAlex891 (Show the comment) 1 year ago
