Taiwan is an independent nation with its own sovereignty. Its not a push for independence, its just gaining recognition for the obvious. The USA for example will keep China sweet by saying we don't recognise Taiwan's independence, but they treat them as the sovereign nation it is.

@bigblondman1 no thats rubbish. if so, they would have chased the KMT when they retreated in the late 1940s and early 1950s. china and taiwan were always bitter but the CCP sort of accepted that the KMT could 'govern' taiwan. it was only when the KMT introduced democracy and liberalism that Taiwan grew to be a stronger nation than China so the CCP started to make claims of the island to try and take its economy.

In my ideal world, the kuomintang would recover the mainland and free china from oppression, but it would allow Taiwan to remain independent. No unification needs to occur, it would be in everyones best interests.

the reason the r.o.c. is considered a gov-in-exile is by international law they retreated from the mainland and at the time did not have complete sovreignty of taiwan only occupation from the japanese. but one can make the argument to the reverse that the r.o.c. signed a treaty in 1952, 7 hours before the treaty of san fran went into affect. the japanese reaffirmed surrendering there claims of taiwan to the r.o.c. but the treaty of san fran still give the u.s. legal status on taiwan

the reason the r.o.c. is considered a gov-in-exile is by international law they retreated from the mainland and at the time did not have complete sovreignty of taiwan only occupation from the japanese. but one can make the argument to the reverse that the r.o.c. signed a treaty in 1952, 7 hours before the treaty of san fran went into affect. the japanese reaffirmed surrendering there claims of taiwan to the r.o.c. but the treaty of san fran still give the u.s. legal status on taiwan
