  • wow. i remember watching this when i was a kid. love this show.

  • who was wasting water? Sure, he let it run while he put the toothpaste on the toothbrush, but who's going to turn the water off for 1 minute while they soap their hands up? Have you ever tried turning on a faucet with soapy, slippery hands? it isn't easy. lol

  • @SiouxCitian Actually, not to create any problems or anything, but i actually have started a Facebook page called "Save The Planet's H2O and i do actually close the faucet for one minute when washing my hands because that little minute can make a difference! If 10 people closed the faucet every time they washed their hands in a day in 2025, 2/3rds of the worlds population would not be facing water shortages.

  • @rayjay0210 Well, you are right about the amount of time adding up. That's true. But I figured more time would add up if you shut the water off during teeth-brushing, then hand rinsing :)

  • This really tramatized me as a child. Now that I am 18 I still think of that fish when someone leaves the water on. HAHA!

  • This one animation is the reason why seeing my Dad brushing his teeth with the water running makes me mad. lol

  • @KaiHimotama

Have you spoken with your Dad about this problem? If so, how did he respond?

  • Hey I'm Mr. fish can u please don't waste any water.

  • @owmaeyen

Not excatly what the first said, but close enough!

  • @RaminHAL9001

Just look at the tags! The guys who animated this were the animators of "Rugrats" (Arlene Klasky & Gabor Csupo).

  • @loveforlogos Nope, the guy who animated this was the creator of Aeon Flux, Peter Chung. But, you're partially right because Chung worked with Klasky/Csupo in helping to design the Rugrats.

  • I remember this

  • omg i remember this!!

  • That bathroom had no wall. Not a very private bathroom... -_-

  • I never let the water run after I saw this! I felt bad for that poor fish...

  • @AbsintheRed2019 I felt bad too that Frank's pond was draining out because Carl was wasting water. I also felt bad seeing that Frank didn't have enough water to swim at 0:41.

  • I actually think of this video ever single time I see that I've left the water on while brushing my teeth/washing my hands. Every time. It's crazy. It's stuck in my brain! My god I love sesame street, it was the best thing for us growing up!

  • @hannrkelley

I think we all get things like that stuck in our heads at times! Whenever I hear the word disgusting, I think of the words of wisdom of Julie from "Gimme a Break!"! She used that word to describe the behavior of her sister Katie and it was in the third season episode called "Samantha's Protest". Just in case you are interested, it is up on You Tube.

  • @Smartboy8877 Hahaha that's awesome, very well done :P. It's great how that happens though!

  • @hannrkelley

Have you seen the "Gimme a Break!" episode that I wrote about? If so, what did you think of it? I thought that it was great to see the poetic justice that was brought to Katie at the end!

  • @Smartboy8877 Haha no I haven't sorry man, I'm australian so I've never ever heard of that show!! I would watch it but I'm in exam mode at the moment :)

  • @hannrkelley

Very pleased to have met you! I lived in Australia for a year and it was a very interesting experience! As far as I know, the only foregn country that "Gimme a Break!" has ever been syndicated to is Canada. This being the case, if you ever get the urge to watch it, You Tube is probably your only hope. Bye!

  • I wish they showed this one on Sesame Street nowadays.

  • 4 people waste water

  • Does anyone know how old this PSA is?? I vaguely remember it from when I was a kid, I grew up in the 90's and I'm not sure if it's the same one...

  • to save LOTS of water search "universal eco Urinal;" here on you tube.

  • Water is so cheap who cares, especailly in the west, if u waste it, it doesnt really mean anything. An image that springs to me is that every splash wasted, could fall into the mouth of someone dying of dehydration. But whether or not i run the tap for ages or not, the dehydrated person still isnt any closer to a tap, or their drinking water any purer.

Im sorry, it doesnt correlate, obv evaporation means that the water goes nowhere, and that the thirsty person still has no well built.

  • @HTMomentum How can someone so moronic know a word like "correlate"? You're a living paradox.

  • @HTMomentum Wrong. Water that we drink is pumped from groundwater and surface water. Besides personal wells, this water has to be treated (varying degrees of treatment depending on source water). That costs money, taxpayer money. It's cheap because of subsidies (like the artificial pricing in the corn industry). cont.

  • @jermicine cont. Once the water goes down the drain after use it has to be treated again, this costs money. The water is then released, usually into a river. Most rivers drain to the ocean. So we are removing fresh water from dwindling sources and adding it to the ocean. Groundwater recharge is much slower than how much is pumped out. And desalination plants are much more expensive than pursuing sustainable practices.

  • @HTMomentum You're an idiot lol

  • Reddit! xD

  • I saw this on Reddit and it made me cry

  • guiltyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • this looks like the same animation from aeon flux?

  • Thats why I brush my teeth in the shower. 2 birds with one tap!

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't what happens when you waste water, typically.

  • haha, i live in canada :P

  • Got darn socialist scare tactics!

  • It looks like Peter Chung's animation

  • Hm.

The kid scared me more than the fish.

  • @TripleRainbowify the fish wasn't supposed to be scary, so, not sure what yer saying...

  • What.The.Hell.

  • Bless the fish. They are good people.

  • whats the lesson in this?... fish have linguistic skills and its ok to use phones underwater?

  • @jimmyPain2121 I think it means that Jesus doesn't want you to brush your teeth.

  • fish have phones? wow.

  • :32 random shirt change of color fail? love this animation

  • zoo

  • So remember this! first time seeing it in years, but I think about it every once and a while

  • So remember this! first time seeing in years but I think about it every once and a while

  • Yeah....just wondering why there's a telephone in the washroom....while one side of the house has on walls....BUT a good video on why we shouldn't waste water :)

  • @macedoniarocks

Well the fish has a phone too, so, that's really not a surprise.

  • Haha, I like how you originally think you have an x-ray vision of the house, but it ends up actually being cut in half, and the kid just peeks around the wall to see the lake.

  • they also taught us about condensation and precipitation. not good for the captain planet agenda :/

  • I love that the kids bathroom is directly connected to the poor fish's little pool, but I always wondered where went after that...

  • @battybuddy Didn't you learn from Finding Nemo that all drains lead to the ocean? :P

  • This is the one skit I remember most from my Sesame Street watching days, I never leave the water on too long for this reason. Even though it's a bit dramatic it was effective! Well done SS!

  • Does anybody know where the Sesame Street video to this song is?

Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to spare. Water in the ground, water in the air. Though it may evaporate it never goes away. Flows into your mountain top, flows into your bay. Animals need water, people need it too. Keep it clean for me and I'll keep it clean for you.

  • @resonanceth I actually don't think that song is from Sesame Street. I think it was shown on PBS kids in between shows.

  • @NEUDude Really? That might explain why I couldn't find it. Thanks for the information!

  • Holy crap I remember this lol

  • Good for the children and the school.

  • KLASKY CSUPO Made this!

  • Seeing this cartoon as a kid is probably the reason I am an Environmental Science student today!

  • An anti-drug commercial on TV reminded me of this.

  • I don't know if anyone else noticed, but his house actually IS half-cutout. When he takes a gander at Frank the Fish, he leans outside of his house, or, to break the fourth-wall, off-set, if you will. This amused me greatly.

  • wooooooooooow nostalgia

  • I remember either seeing this or an ad that was similar when I was a kid. Ever since, I have never let the sink run while brushing my teeth. Gotta be one of the most effective PSA's ever.

  • Ew! He brushes his teeth with unpurifed pond water?! lol

  • I remember this quite clearly.

  • This was one of the first things I ever remember seeing and thinking "This is bullcrap. When I run my water, I am not draining a pond. That's not how it works." I was too smart for this at two years old, hahaha.

  • I remember this scene too when I was a kid. The fish was almost out of water; how sad.

  • What was the song on sesame street that went 'don't waste water, water, water water.' I can't find a video anywhere of it.

  • I had forgotten this but totally remember it now. The animation and sounds are so rich!

...I was looking for the thing that went: "doooon't waaaaist wa-ter (Water! Water! Water! Water! Water!

  • me too, i always remembered this video, very very powerful. via National Geographic.. Nearly 70% of the World's fresh water is locked in ice. Most of the rest is in aquifers that we're draining Much more quickly than the Natural recharge rate. 2/3rds of our water is used to Grow food. With 83 million More people on earth each year, water Demand will keep going Up unless we Change how we use it.

  • Holy shitballs!! I think about this video every once in a while, I never thought to check youtube! Thanks a metric shit-ton for uploading. I remembered it with crazy accuracy, too. I never left the water on after this :) Sweet memories.

  • great video!

  • This was one of the most memorable clips from Sesame Street. Thanks to this, I NEVER keep the fauchet running for anything (I might drown some fishys- lol)

  • OMG!!! I'm so glad I found this video.

  • I definitely remember this. Thanks to having seen it twice on PBS Sprout (and at some point in my childhood), it's one of my fave clips.

This is what the environment needs right now.

  • I guess now Frank The Fish has to wait for it to rain to refill his pond, huh?

  • I'll bet he wishes he lived in the stream in my backyard. It's overflowing thanks to the rain we got last night.

  • I didn't know Klasky Csupo was the animator of this. All I know is that Klasky Csupo is one of the famous Animators for Rugrats.

  • Whoops. I mean Alrlene Clasky and Gabor Csupo.

  • Peter Chung of Æon Flux fame, to be exact, who also directed the pilot episode of Rugrats.

  • I have been looking for this video FOREVER! It was my favorite one as a kid!! Thank you so much for uploading this!

  • omg i have been too! hooray for memories!

  • Hah, I remember seeing this one as a kid.

  • The average American uses much more water than the average European person, I can't remember the exact statistic but water is soon becoming vastly depleting in the US. This short is brilliant in bringing the message home.

  • I REMEMBER THIS!

  • CLASSIC!!!

  • I remember seeing this when I was a kid. Now that I see it now, I am wondering who did the animation for this sketch, it is unusually smooth and dynamic for a sesamee street animation.

  • @RaminHAL9001 Peter Chung

  • Comment removed

  • @RaminHAL9001 Peter Chung. He also did the rugrats intro and pilot, and he also did Aeon Flux

  • @RaminHAL9001 You've probably gotten an answer by now, but if you haven't, the artist responsible for this is Peter Chung. He animated Aeon Flux, Rugrats, among many other animated gems.

  • @Caqui Rugrats! Of course!!!

  • @RaminHAL9001 The same guy who animated the Rugrats.

  • To this day I don't understand why people leave the water running when brushing their teeth. I say, "didn't you see that thing on Sesame Street? Save the fishes!"

  • i never really understanded that in the first place. why do you even need the watter running. if any toothpaste falls into the sink you can clean it after

  • i actually remember this and think of it every time i brush my teeth!!!

ok..so that sounded cooler in my head.

  • It's really good video!

  • Everyone Shouldn't Waste Water;

Because There are People in Africa That Can't Drink Pure Water; So Be Thankful and Don't Waste

  • i so remember this...its so cool..its been so many years and remembering watching this ...always though of it to when i was brushing my teeth..still freaks me out thou

  • This always freaked me out as a kid.

  • Oh my gosh! I remember this one! I still think of that fish whenever I brush my teeth. It's amazing what sticks with us from childhood.

  • I remember this from over 20 years ago

  • I remember this! ever since I saw it, I have never brushed my teeth with running water! lol

but its a good rule to live by

    don't waste water :)

  • @awynn87 Same here. This 45 second video probably had one of the biggest impacts on me ever. To this day, when I brush my teeth, or when my sweetie and I are brushing our teeth at the same time, I make sure we always turn off the water. Gawd, Sesame Street was amazing.

  • @awynn87 Ever since I saw it, I never run the water when I brush my teeth either!

  • AWESOME! I learn so much from sesame street :3

  • when was this

  • Oh MAN! Retro for the win! :D

  • i remember this! i still think of this every time i brush my teeth haha

  • Is that really how it works?

  • No. This is a way to remind people not to waste water.

  • MY GOD IREMEMBER THIS

  • Love this one.

  • first lol
