Hahaha deadly! A few of my friends have said the same thing to me in the past. Purely a coincidence I assure you, my hair looks nothing like that anymore.
Obviously for metal, scooping the mids would be the first step but the best advice I can give you is get a decent distortion pedal. The dirt channel on the Deluxe 85 leaves a lot to be desired, and I honestly never use it. Solid state distortion generally sounds a bit thin and wimpy to my ears (but that's just my opinion of course)
Thanks alot! I'm still new to making gear demos but I'm gonna try and do a few more now that my laptops back in action. I paid roughly 250 euro for the amp a few years ago (bought it in a massive Radiohead phase, lame I know!)
1. Supposed to be Shred into Alesis, or else the molten aspect is lost a bit.
2. Sounded good otherwise. I always thought the siren style stuff was overdubs of lead parts with the reverb setting. Thank you for demonstrating that MBV is not super difficult to replicate live.
3. You wouldn't mind posting the soundcloud, would you? mine is /permute-us ;)
I tried putting the distortion into the Alesis and honestly hated the results (each to their own I suppose). I've recently acquired a Midiverb 2 so I may re-do this video with my Jazzmaster to try and get as close to the original effects Kevin Shields used as possible.
As for my soundcloud, my username is aycks. Thanks for watching :)
we need more people like you playing this type of music please let me know if you are on a band or something to listen to because i really love this music
As I've said to everyone else that's given me lovely compliments, thank you!
As of right now I'm without a band (or any sort of musical ensemble), but I hope to change that this year. I do have a Soundcloud account where most of my music is like the track in this video, if you'd like the url let me know :)
@happydan205 yeah of course i'm interested please any link to something you do would be great and keep on doing this because people like me really apreciate this music.
Thank you and thank you again! The tuning is one of my own creations, based around DADF#AD but with some minor changes and tuned flat. The low C notes add a nice bassy presence to the chord changes :)
I used the Reverse2 setting on the Quadraverb, blended a full dry signal with around 70% wet reverb. The time was maxed out, as was the decay and I think the predelay was set somewhere around 100ms? I'll go back to the unit soon and get exact parameters for you :)
Yeah, that sounds about like where I live. I live in Jackson, MS, and in the Mississippi Delta, and it's the same way in both places. Where do you live?
Well, I would probably be one of those people that did that, but not necessarily dubstep. There is a huge amount of room for shoegaze atmospherics in dubstep, though. Nobody just seems to really explore them.
This was absolutely beautiful. I originally got a quadraverb for added lushness to my hardware-based electronic compositions, but with how you use it, I am seriously thinking about starting a shoegaze band. This seriously sounds amazing. Keep up the great work!
See, it's comments like this that make me glad I joined Youtube in the first place. Seriously, thank you so much! Means an awful lot to me that people are actually appreciative of what I'm trying to do. Where I live, not many people are into this kind of music at all!
As soon as I get a break from college I plan on doing a whole heap of new gear videos so stay tuned for more demos and songs in the very near future :)
There's a good mix of people into different music where I live, but very few of them are aware of bands like My Bloody Valentine, and half of the people who know of The Verve have absolutely no idea that their first album is an ambient, shoegazey masterpiece! They just assume all they did was Bittersweet Symphony and think they're a shite band because of it...
Too many people I know have abandoned playing guitar in favour of making dubstep music..Such a shame really!
Depending on the song, I do use a very subtle phaser from time to time. I typically use a Small Stone by EHX and only bring it out for Verve-y songs as opposed to MBV style shoegaze material.
As for the RV5, I think the modulate mode is brilliant sounding (then again everyone says that really!) but I don't use it for shoegaze music either (again, it gets used for Nick McCabe sounds).
I use the Quad on everything, and add in other pedals as I see fit.
Thanks alot mate, I'm glad you like the video! You'll be happy to know that I'm planning on doing a series of in depth demos for the Quadraverb over the coming weeks.
It's a shame that there aren't many decent demos of it already, it's such a wonderful unit.
They probably have proper, "technical" names, but given the fact the song is in a made up tuning of mine, I don't know what to call the chords I use. I just found a number of chord shapes that blended well together and made a song out of them.
The Shredmaster settings you can make out if you pause the video.
The reverb was set for Pre-EQ, with full reverb density and diffusion, 140ms of pre-delay, the high and low frequency decay were both set to -00%, the decay(feedback) was around 65-75% and the signal mix was 99 for master effects and reverb output. The dry signal amount went from 80 for the wet/dry mix sample, then 0 for the fully wet example. I think I had the reverb chorus option on a really subtle setting too.
I used to have an old Peavey Backstage 30 solid state amp that had horrifically bad onboard overdrive and and crunch. However, when you played the amp clean and used an EHX Big Muff it was brilliant for lead work. I'd mic it with a SM57 and it would record very, very nicely. Same concept I guess.
Thanks for the reply. I assumed that you were going through the clean channel because the overdrive/crunch channel on the Deluxe 85 sounds very processed... Almost like an old 1980's Rockman unit.
I've never seen a closeup pic of Jonny Greenwood's old Deluxe 85 or the amp settings documented well, but I'm guessing he did the same thing. His pedalboards and split signal between his AC30 and Fender amps are common knowledge but the amp settings are not.
You're welcome, I love talking about gear (it's actually a vice of mine to be honest!)
The overdrive channel on the Deluxe 85 is indeed a stinker. I've really avoided using it as much as possible. No matter how I set it up, it just sounds dreadful.
I've never seen a decent photo of Jonnys Deluxe 85 settings, but I did see a gig shot of his current, Fender 85 (the smaller version of the Deluxe) and his EQ settings looked like they were all set around 5/6.
I thought you were kevin shields at first wtf

I've yet to come across a solid state amp that had good built in distortion, I've always used pedals for dirt sounds.
Someday I might be able to afford a tube amp and then get to experience some truly great sounding amp distortion :)

Hey. Which channel and settings sre you using on the Fender Deluxe 85 if you don't mind sharing.

chazroot 6 months ago
@chazroot
I don't mind sharing them at all!
It was the clean channel with the Treble at 10 (full), the Bass at 8 and the overall volume at 3.
The clean channel is pretty simple having only 3 controls, but it does the job.
Hope that helps :)
