if the world does end at the end 2012 then what wud be a better way than a beautiful comet from space want it to be halleys comet really cos it visits us every 76 yrs and its like and old friend that comes and gos wow
Oh man, I miss Hale Bopp so much! I was a 17 year old kid back then. Great memories about being outside with that awesome looking comet in the skies for weeks!
in '97 i was 12... i vividly recall being on a road trip during the comet's visibility. when my parents pointed it out to me somewhere on the road in mississippi i watched it for dozens of miles. It was and still is one of the most beautiful things i've ever witnessed.
I remember this! I was 6 years old and me and my dad watched it from the balcony of our house, it was seen on the south, traveling from east to west :) I think that it is the most beautiful memory I have from my childhood!!! and I think it was a bit bigger than it is seen on the video here..
I was completely ignorant of astronomy when I was 6 (when this comet past earth). I wish a least one parent or guardian had asked me to crane my neck up into the sky so I could look at this beauty. It's all good looking at the video footage but I need to see it with my own eyes! Hopefully another great comet will pass soon enough.
Nice time-lapse movie! smooth! Do you know you can make time-lpase movies with any camera with this device: (copy address to browser): tempusALL.bymac.org
Would be great if you could see the Heaven's Gate cult's space-ship in the photo, which, according to their leader, was following right behind, at the time they drank poison and "checked out."
I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thankful that I was ALIVE and ABLE to remember such a comet with my own eyes! :') Seeing stuff like this on TV, just doesn't even come CLOSE.
I'm jut old enough to remeber this....I was in colorado in the mountains on my first vacation and we were in the middle no where...no light but the moon...it was awsome
I was still in high school when this peaked. I would stand and stare at it every night around dusk. Glad I was there for this once in 3500 years occurence.
Throughout recorded time, many different societies have blamed comets for earthquakes, wars, sicknesses, and even the deaths of leaders. My mother passed away in 1997. She was my leader for so many years. What a light show ma'. Miss you. With love, your son
@fullquiverwith6 With Planet X approaching... I have noticed an increase in weather activity getting stronger and more strange... plus earthquake activity picking up among other things..... I can concur with those societies blames.
I remember seeing Hale Bopp. Glad I was around to see a once in a lifetime event like that.
Shame that I:
1) lived in the city and had a ton of light pollution to diminish the view
2) didn't have a telescope at the time
3) didn't own a decent camera at the time.
if the same was to happen today I would setup a semi-permanent tri-pod mount to get a good time lapse of the comet. And since i live in the middle of nowhere the viewing would be wonderful.
I was a child when this Comet was visible in the sky, it was so beautiful and I kept a wonderful childhood memory about it. I would if this Comet is ever going to pass Earth again like it did in 1997?
@19189073 Sadly, there are no other known Great Comets or newly discovered ones that will be visible in the next few years. Now for the good news ... That's not neccessarily saying there won't be any. Sometimes they sneak up on us like a thief in the night like Hale / Bopp did. It was discovered 1995 then arrived in 1997. In other words, another Great Comet could be discovered next month and pay us a visit 3 or 4 years later. ( crosses fingers and toes ) Hale / Bopp was MAGNIFICENT !!!
I was 10 when i saw this. I could've ask my dad to borrow his camera to take a few shots of it. It was bright enough for anyone who are looking for it, even in light polluted large city areas.
so impressive to see it in person... if only it could have been closer like Halley in '86 only 10 million away would have been an amazing show... nice time lapse. fun to watch
i remember seeing it as a kid as well, the tail seemed to be actually behind it though not above it. prolly cos i live in the north of Russia. there were no any more big bright comets in the 90s were they?
Wow, this is so cool! When Hale-Bopp was in the sky where I live in Maryland, I went out every night to watch it, froze my buns off but it was worth it! Tonight I am going out to watch the meteor showers. Love the sky!
I remember this comet...gets me all sentimental....so much water under bridge since that time, wish I could go back and relive my life, would do lots o things different...
disputes with gravity from dark matter and planet and also the sun will change the speed offten. Tail of the comet is ice being melted away by solar winds from the sun so it is actually going quite fast.
I appreciate the explanation, but, you understand how a person that isn't an astronomer may view this? It never seems to move, although I'm sure its going very fast.

i live in a rural area & used to go out every clear night & watch this comet in AWE, far away from the nearest houses or roads, in total blackness.... it was ENORMOUS in Northern Ontario where i was...
you could actually see the slow-motion movement of the coma 'flames' (looked like 'ghost flames') -- it looked unreal.
when I first saw it...I was jogging one night and I looked up and went "Holy Sh*t"..what the heck is that?...I went running full blast to my Dads house not far away..and I said "quick come out here and see this comet before it leaves"...not knowing it would be visible for the next 3 months...lmao...
The two shots were taken on two consecutive nights, thus showing the movement of the comet against the background stars. The star that was in the comet's tail on the first night is just further to the right on the next night. In fact you are the first person to spot that fact so give yourself a blue star.
