  • I was born the day this comet appeared

  • i was not even freakin BORN YET!!! i guess i will have to wait another 4,000 years *sighs*

  • i'm doing a astronomy project on it

  • if the world does end at the end 2012 then what wud be a better way than a beautiful comet from space want it to be halleys comet really cos it visits us every 76 yrs and its like and old friend that comes and gos wow

  • Oh man, I miss Hale Bopp so much! I was a 17 year old kid back then. Great memories about being outside with that awesome looking comet in the skies for weeks!

  • Damn.. Missed the ship in 97'

    Heaven's Gate

  • in '97 i was 12... i vividly recall being on a road trip during the comet's visibility. when my parents pointed it out to me somewhere on the road in mississippi i watched it for dozens of miles. It was and still is one of the most beautiful things i've ever witnessed.

  • I remember this! I was 6 years old and me and my dad watched it from the balcony of our house, it was seen on the south, traveling from east to west :) I think that it is the most beautiful memory I have from my childhood!!! and I think it was a bit bigger than it is seen on the video here..

  • Ivr never seen the comet in person but i was named after it because i was born the same day :)

  • @Halibop33 it lasted 18 months lol

  • My dad took me to the top of a hill to watch it pass on its peak night! I was 7 and i still remember it!

  • I was completely ignorant of astronomy when I was 6 (when this comet past earth). I wish a least one parent or guardian had asked me to crane my neck up into the sky so I could look at this beauty. It's all good looking at the video footage but I need to see it with my own eyes! Hopefully another great comet will pass soon enough.

  • wow......i remember this. I remember exactly what it looked like. Humbling.

  • One of my best childhood memories was watching it every night and marvelling at how awesome our universe it.

  • Nice time-lapse movie! smooth! Do you know you can make time-lpase movies with any camera with this device: (copy address to browser): tempusALL.bymac.org

Works with ANY camera! cool :P

  • WHYYYY ?! i didn't see it cuz i was 3 years old !

  • Would be great if you could see the Heaven's Gate cult's space-ship in the photo, which, according to their leader, was following right behind, at the time they drank poison and "checked out."

  • Now that's pushing it... sorry but can't remember.

    Possibly 50ASA 4 or 5 seconds

  • Now that's pushing it... sorry but can't remember.

  • If you remember, what were the exposure details?

  • I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO thankful that I was ALIVE and ABLE to remember such a comet with my own eyes! :') Seeing stuff like this on TV, just doesn't even come CLOSE.

  • I'm jut old enough to remeber this....I was in colorado in the mountains on my first vacation and we were in the middle no where...no light but the moon...it was awsome

  • Cool video! But I can think of a few (a lot) better places than London to film it! :p

  • @LonghornPhysicist Of course you can... so where's your shot?

  • Incredible

  • I was still in high school when this peaked. I would stand and stare at it every night around dusk. Glad I was there for this once in 3500 years occurence.

  • Throughout recorded time, many different societies have blamed comets for earthquakes, wars, sicknesses, and even the deaths of leaders. My mother passed away in 1997. She was my leader for so many years. What a light show ma'. Miss you. With love, your son

  • @fullquiverwith6 With Planet X approaching... I have noticed an increase in weather activity getting stronger and more strange... plus earthquake activity picking up among other things..... I can concur with those societies blames.

  • @kellenslilman

You believe that 2012 Nibiru bullshit?

  • Hale Bopp is dear to my heart because it was in the sky over Essex UK shortly after conceiving my daughter.

  • This comet is one of the fondest childhood memories I have.

  • I remember seeing Hale Bopp. Glad I was around to see a once in a lifetime event like that.

    Shame that I:

    1) lived in the city and had a ton of light pollution to diminish the view

    2) didn't have a telescope at the time

    3) didn't own a decent camera at the time.

if the same was to happen today I would setup a semi-permanent tri-pod mount to get a good time lapse of the comet. And since i live in the middle of nowhere the viewing would be wonderful.

  • I was a child when this Comet was visible in the sky, it was so beautiful and I kept a wonderful childhood memory about it. I would if this Comet is ever going to pass Earth again like it did in 1997?

  • @19189073 Sadly, there are no other known Great Comets or newly discovered ones that will be visible in the next few years. Now for the good news ... That's not neccessarily saying there won't be any. Sometimes they sneak up on us like a thief in the night like Hale / Bopp did. It was discovered 1995 then arrived in 1997. In other words, another Great Comet could be discovered next month and pay us a visit 3 or 4 years later. ( crosses fingers and toes ) Hale / Bopp was MAGNIFICENT !!!

  • @ReneeNme Well Comet Elenin should be visible to us all late august early september so ive been reading,i hope its as good as hale bopp :)

  • @Bluenose0121 In my opinion it's gonna be worse. ;)

  • It's chuck norris' jizz fools!

  • Hale bopp isn't a comet, it a ship if you want proof ask me I'll give it to you..

  • i want proof

  • they say halebopp is an artificial satelite.

  • @Getdamoneyng0 lol so its not one of the real ones? WORD FAIL

  • Amazing!

  • I loved watching this while driving with my Mom after dark. Always seemed to be travelling with me....

  • when will i be able to see this??

  • @Saggmos95 4534, unless you have access to a very large telescope. In that case it will be 2020.

  • You guys are so damn lucky to have seen this, because the next time it appears is in the year 4385. lol

  • I was 7 years old and my mom was showing it to me almost every night!

  • Brings back memories, I was a kid back then but still remember it quite clearly.

  • I was 8 years old when I saw this

  • i knew!!!! at nights i always looked at it, and now that i ask about it, nobody remembers!!! i knew it wasnt my imagination XD

  • I was born on 1997!

  • @bubbles92768 In.

  • i think Comet 96P should be visible in 2012,but comets are hard to predict so who knows, one can be sneaking up on earth right now.

  • I was 10 when i saw this. I could've ask my dad to borrow his camera to take a few shots of it. It was bright enough for anyone who are looking for it, even in light polluted large city areas.

  • this video liar

  • so impressive to see it in person... if only it could have been closer like Halley in '86 only 10 million away would have been an amazing show... nice time lapse. fun to watch

  • Hale's bopp was 100 million miles long!

  • i remember !! it was 1997 !!!

  • @TeRRoRclaas you'r so lucky, the next pas is in.....4000 years!

  • @TeRRoRclaas Yup I remember it plain as day! I was 15 then and was so fascinated! :) How often does it come around? lol I forget.

  • i remember seeing it as a kid as well, the tail seemed to be actually behind it though not above it. prolly cos i live in the north of Russia. there were no any more big bright comets in the 90s were they?

  • i was only 3 years old when i saw this and i remeber it like it was yesterday... its a memory i will never forget =)

  • @clappinmonkey09 I was the same age when this passed--and I somehow remember it, too! After all the years...I think it will be forever in my head.

  • I definitely still remember seeing this when i was a kid...luckily i lived in the middle of nowhere at the time so it was much brighter

  • mother fucking hale bopp

  • Wow, this is so cool! When Hale-Bopp was in the sky where I live in Maryland, I went out every night to watch it, froze my buns off but it was worth it! Tonight I am going out to watch the meteor showers. Love the sky!

  • Makes you think - will anyone be around to see it when it returns in 4390ad?

  • i remember seeing this, very dark where we used to live so it was quite clear.

    something ill never forget!

  • Very nice video.

I remember that is saw halle Bopp from our bystreet. Verry beautifull nice to see

    I was 12 years old.

  • mee too. but i was in the western u.s.a

  • what sort of nitwits post a pointless commment like that?

  • People who LIVE there?

    Yesh. Get over yourself.

  • thats so cool.. I just got a 10" dob.. can't wait to see a comet!

  • I remember this comet...gets me all sentimental....so much water under bridge since that time, wish I could go back and relive my life, would do lots o things different...

  • No kidding. 1997-1999 were amazing years, then somehow everything since 2000 has been a big pile of burning shit for me.

  • Right?

  • Any 1996 or earlier photos or videos especially timelapse videos. Look in the tail for the companion. Please post them.

  • Does anyone have any more timelapse videos or closeups of the companion. It looks like something is in the tail at the beginning.

  • Good video.Never got to see it when it appeared originally. Now I can see it over and over again.Thanks.

  • hale bopp returns every 18000 years

  • actually its due back in the year 4300..... so that nmakes it approx 4324 years but you were close lol

  • i guess the book i read was wrong...oh well...i'lll be dead regardless lol...

  • I too would watch this cool comet every night. Coolest thing ever. I don't know if this coming back again?

  • I saw that just outside the store where I worked when I was 15. I always sat and watched it :) It was such a nice addition to the night sky

  • I remember seeing that comet when I was 4 :D

  • Hale-Bopp orbits on the Oort cloud and is expected to return around 4300.

  • so its from there? god damn long distance!! where is it now?

  • disputes with gravity from dark matter and planet and also the sun will change the speed offten. Tail of the comet is ice being melted away by solar winds from the sun so it is actually going quite fast.

  • I appreciate the explanation, but, you understand how a person that isn't an astronomer may view this? It never seems to move, although I'm sure its going very fast.

  • Why do comets never really seem to move? It was in front of the same star the entire time-lapse. I bet the next night...it was in the SAME place....WHY/HOW?

  • They do move... just very slowly.

  • it wasn't close enough for us to see how quickly it was moving. You have to think in terms of distance. The star behind it is lightyears away and the comet is not close enough to us. If the time lapse was filmed for the entire duration that the comet was visible, you would understand what I mean. If we were to actually see it moving as fast as it was going all in one night, then it might as well have impacted on our planet

  • then this time lapse is kinda useless... how big impact if it hit us?

  • a comet of any size if it hit the earth would bring total global devastation

we're taking another ice age...for those countries not instantly vaporized during the impact .

  • I remember that summer , or at least think it was. Everynight watching that thing knowing it was coming towards the earth was crazy. You could see the tail and everything.

  • that year a 'flood of the millennium' encountered in my country...

  • I figured it would go a whole lot faster than that

  • i live in a rural area & used to go out every clear night & watch this comet in AWE, far away from the nearest houses or roads, in total blackness.... it was ENORMOUS in Northern Ontario where i was...

you could actually see the slow-motion movement of the coma 'flames' (looked like 'ghost flames') -- it looked unreal.

  • when I first saw it...I was jogging one night and I looked up and went "Holy Sh*t"..what the heck is that?...I went running full blast to my Dads house not far away..and I said "quick come out here and see this comet before it leaves"...not knowing it would be visible for the next 3 months...lmao...

  • You seem to like timlapse and astronomy the same as me, I encose video. Your comet video is great!

  • i remember going to a park in my hometown and watching it with friends a pint of jack when i about 19 or 20. fond memories

  • man makes me sad, i saw this every night as well..who knows what humans will be doing by the time it returns...

  • Supposedly by wikipedia, it says it will return by the year 4377. We need a long life :P

  • everyone said "doesn't it look like a fuzzy snowball?" I had waited many many years to see a real comet, and this did not disappoint.

  • I remember this, it was awesome in the sky for months! I used to look at it every night before going to bed! lol

  • you can see hale-bopp's companion from the long shot but not close-up. hmmmm

  • The two shots were taken on two consecutive nights, thus showing the movement of the comet against the background stars. The star that was in the comet's tail on the first night is just further to the right on the next night. In fact you are the first person to spot that fact so give yourself a blue star. Now you know the reason you can check on Starry Night Pro or any other astronomy software and actually the first person to tell me the shoot dates gets another blue star.

    John Adderley

  • you would have loved to have seen it from the very dark roads of scotlands countryside! i watched this beutiful sight every night it was here.

also the metoer storm that occured a few years later was a sight to behold, it went on for hours, remarkable.

  • Hiya John. I have scanned through the replies but not found anyone who has risen to your challenge. The first shot was taken on the night of 9th April 1997, with Hale-Bopp between Algol (Beta Persei) and Rho Persei; the second the night after, on 10th April.

    Clear skies

[goes to screen and collects blue star from John]

  • This was a breathtaking sight when it happen. I saw it for several days when it passed over...truly remarkable!

  • well that was awhile back, Thank god nothing happened. But there is alot more stuff thats going on now that people aint even aware of. news, press, controlled media? start diggin' for utmost truth on whats going on. May peace see the light one day.

  • gr8

it is my wish to see comet with my own eyes........

  • Thanks for posting this! I thought I was going to have to wait until 5996 to see this comet again.

  • According to alex collier:

Its being staffed by warrior class reptillians.

According to alex collier: The Andromedans have said that Hale-Bopp is a protocol ship from the Orion Group, and that it contains reptilians in cryogenic stasis.

  • Awesome Video, Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Comet Hale-Bopp during 1997 was indeed a spectacular sight to the naked eye.

11 years on I doubt whether it would have been barely visible to the majority of Town and City dwellers due to the increase of man-made light pollution.

  • Great 'Tube. Thanks for the post.

  • oh lovley!! I saw this as a little boy in the sky with my dad.

    Awesome memories.

  • oh that is wonderful. Thankyou. Remember going to the top of the moors at Belmont to see Hale Bopp, not realising I could see it from my living room window! Missed it when it left :(

  • Very very cool, Thanks J.

  • this is the only actual video i have found of hale bopp i wish were were more video of it i remember seing it in the night sky and people pointing in awe

  • Then days later, people pointed in awe at newspapers with the headline "39 Dead in Mass Suicide." Was so tragic. Applewhite videos give me the creeps now. :P

  • and more creeps after googling "chuck shramek"

  • This is awesome! I've been dusting off my Hale-Bopp pics and thinking about doing a video. I'm gonna do it but yours is way cooler. Loved it!

  • thanks :)

  • Very cool, John!
