I love Charlie Pride's version but this just absolutely, totally out-Honky Tonks Charlie's take on this song, hands down! A lot of Paychecks music is so distilled into the purest form of this type of music, that you can practically just feel a good drunk coming on followed by a bar fight, as soon as you drop a coin in the Jukebox!
Oh yeah! Johnny & Lloyd & Aubrey Mayhew & Little Darlin' - the combo of the BEST honky-tonkin' country! Great comments here an' I'm with ya all the way!
Paycheck was the man! POINT BLANK! And if he were here today he would tell ya what he thinks about these pretty boy, pop country, boy band reject, wussys that are on the radio!!!!!
@mrhankcollins Yes! You are so right on! The trouble is, the old DJs could play what they wanted and what was good. Now, they have to play whatever pre-programmed Clear Channel garbage is thrown at them.
This was when country music had feeling and meaning and was presented by artists who wasn't in it for the check. Look at the attire! I saw Chesney on stage in torn fadded rags. Where is the self respect and pride?
But she can be retained alonger time than if she was pop, more money. She is like an oil well ..millions. Johnny Pay is too real for society and not a product. Thats why he will LAST LONGER !
Well .All I have to say is how rediculous new "country" is compared to this. Since we can't control the name "country" as a category anymore, since it has been used as a marketing tool. Listen taylor swift sold 30millions of records hence her investment status on TV. She is like selling insurance, cars ,soda. we all know she is not country.
Memories and sadness. What a great voice and it breaks me up to hear these songs of the past . Thank you for posting Johnny Paycheck, truly beautiful.
I miss Johnny Paycheck. Many years ago in Destin, Fl I used to meet him occasionally in the Donut Hole coffee shop. He told some great stories of life on the road, and he was a hoot to be around.
Johnny had a unique style of singing Country music, and he always was a crowd pleaser.
What a beautiful job Johnny does with this song. I love the song and he sure makes it special. He's always been at the top of my list of great artists and I am so glad that his career made it possible for all of us to enjoy his music. He does ballads like this one so well - I feel his voice was just made for them.
I first heard his version of this song on the way home from my terrible job at a Fortune 500 company that shall remain nameless. But that's water under the bridge. What is important is that, I learned this song off of Charley Pride's Live album that I had as a kid "In Person" and it was always my favorite. And then that night, I heard this version and it knocked my socks off. Thanks for a 5 STAR POST.
Is that Don RIch standing behind him in that one picture? Sure looks like him.
