@rebelwithakeyboard Ab-Soul is preaching some absolute truth on this track. His lyrics are so damn good. Plus his flow is nasty. Just get a sip of this elixir, before they crop us out the picture. I never seen a crop circle but I've seen cops circle the block"
@austinluther27 That's the direction hip-hop originally started heading towards and it was gorgeous. But we completely moved away from it, sadly. THIS is where rap needs to go. This is where rap needs to be. Something with meaning, something with some actual instrumentation, something with some soul.
@teethofghosts I do realize that but the thing is, it's evolved into a clusterfuck of club bangers, meaningless lyrics, and sex and partying. Hip-hop used to stand for something, a civil movement, something to express the hardships of the ghettoes, the projects, the lower class. I understand that there still were jazz-rap acts back in the 90's and such but it is very rare to hear something like this these days which is sad, because this is soul right here. Anyway, gonna go listen to Black Radio
@IntegralProd ERG wrong. Hip-hop started as party music. And just because something isn't conscious jazz rap talking about struggles doesn't mean it's bad, and there's still plenty of that today. You have to look at music in its context. A lot of Club Bangers can be great, and lyrics about sex/partying never was equivalent to less quality. Just because folk isn't a bunch of hippies singing about the Vietnam War as much doesn't mean the genre's evolved in a bad light.
@teethofghosts Folk also isn't mindless nonsense talking about girls shaking asses and taking shots of robotussin or lean or getting as fucked up as you can. Folk songs actually tell a story. My point was, the Hip-Hop industry today is very lack luster, much of it sounds the same, and it's all dumbed down. Compare today's rappers with Big L, Big Pun, Ice Cube, Tupac, Biggie, Wu-Tang, etc. I'm not saying everything should be "conscious jazz rap" but when everything is brain dead club music . . .
@IntegralProd it's moving away from where it should be going. It's almost as if it's devolving, which is sad. A lot of the great rappers out there aren't in the mainstream market, they're underground. A lot of the mainstream market is saturated with two-bit wannabe thugs and people with no real direction or message. When was the last time you heard a rap song on the radio that DIDN'T have to do with drugs, buying a shit ton of stuff you don't need, or getting laid and really fucked up?
@IntegralProd So? Subject matter isn't correlated with quality whatsoever. There are plenty of great songs about hitting dat ass and getting throwed. It just seems like you take it too seriously. You complain about it being really homogenous subject matter-wise, but Big L almost rapped about the same overall stuff. And a lot of "conscious" rappers and 90s rappers are guilty of the exact same thing, you just have a personal preference for those subject matters because you feel they're "deeper".
@IntegralProd And there's Marvins Room. I'll concede that it's R&B and it does involve getting drunk but it's actually pretty damn artistic once you dissect it. It's not just Drake crying over his ex, it's just this flow-of-consciousness spiral into pathetic drunkenness and trying to call his ex but as it gets further, you just catch so much subtext. And I'm pretty sure it got a lot of radio play and the rapping parts did have a lot of internal rhymes.
tupac did a song for a movie he was in called gridlocked .... the name of the song was called life is a traffic jam ... life is a traffic jam was sampled for this song
@WolfpackMusicGroup then what song is life is a traffic sampled from because this is a Jazz song, I want the jazz song, it sounds like Joshua Redman or Kenny Garrett, but I'm not sure
@WolfpackMusicGroup okay you're not even close lol, Life is a Traffic Jam sampled the bass line from a jazz song called Calling Ms. Khadijah by Art Blakey with Lee Morgan. This song interpolated the chant Life is a Traffic Jam. But the actual I guess "beat" cause its not a beat, their rapping over an actual song. Its a jazz song. But I can't figure out which one. Unless they used live instrumentation and this is not a sample. Which with absoul I wouldn't be surprised.
@taaffeman132 if it was thats crazy loco lol, Kendrick either has friends or money to pull that off cause this a crazy Jazz song. Whose Terrance Martin???
@LittlJohn Terrace Martin is a producer. Has been producing for Kendrick for a while now and Kendrick has a few features on his Terrace Mixtapes. Look up "Here, My Dear" & "The Sex EP"
@mailboxman201 Like angeldust. Im saying get off the drugs. Kendrick and Lupe are on the highest level of lyricism ever seen in the game. But to say kendricks better than lu is still crazy talk.
@MatthewHoustonMusic Lupe at his peak (F&L I) is better than Kendrick Lamar when you look at songs like Hurt Me Soul, American Terrorist, and Conflict Diamonds. But Lupe's peak was at the beginning of his rap career. Lu can still rap, but overall product is no where close to where it used to be. Compare Section 80 to Lasers or FoTP and... there's no comparison. Even comparing this to "The Cool", Sec 80 is still close when looking at Reagan Era, Rigamortis, Outro, & Hiiipower to name a few.
@MatthewHoustonMusic In what song(s) did Lupe ever rap over jazz? If you're talking about "Paris, Tokyo", as a guy who plays jazz (drums), I can tell you that "Paris, Tokyo" and this Outro are two different levels of music. What Lupe rapped over was light jazz. Musically, this is just the more difficult of the two.
Although both songs are in straight 4/4 time, imo Kendrick is rapping with a more complex flow than Lupe.
@MatthewHoustonMusic Rapping over Coltraine... smooth. To be honest, I hopped around on the mixtape, didn't like the tracks I hit (sounded like dubstep), and didn't listen to the whole thing. Definitely my bad since I missed that song. If Lupe did songs like that for F&L 2, I'd be onboard. That's what I wanted to hear when I was waiting for Lasers to drop. I want 06-07 Lupe where every song on the album was great (and most on the mixtapes).
You've reformed my opinion, I favorited that song.
Im writing a paper on this shyt, I never realized how much these guys packed into this till i got to the 4th fuggin page, Staight up SPEECHLESS, revolutionary

To me Kendrick is garbage. Ab Soul is the only one I'm checking for out of TDE. Kendrick just has a different flow and he talks about some hood issues here and there but most of the time he's garbage. And who hasn't spoke on the hood? C'mon son. We need more.
@adebisi20 I respect how you answered that comment. You answered very calmly and also pointed him the direction of something new like he asked for. So you were also helpful to him as well. And to that my friend I say congratulations sir congratulations.
@RDoubt96 Respond to this video... you should listen to vanity slaves, the heart pt.1&2, heaven and hell, faith, i hate you, and the relevant. those are just a few songs that show kendrick lamar's versatility. Ab Soul is really good as well though.
@RDoubt96 lil wayne drake lil boosie, nicki are garbage.. Kendrick along with very few new artists out representing our generation are ass and non lyrical and don't have substance.
I was bumpin this at work today and someone said this is "garbage" and it "has no excitement" that it's "just poetry with a beat" . I just looked at them and couldn't help but laugh at them but then I took pity on the people that have no idea what music is. It's a sad truth.
@rafybass11_All you can do is laugh at the ignorant, theyre brainwashed, and just like were passing knowledge theyre passing garbage till the shit starts smelling so well!

@RDoubt96 Respond to this video... you should listen to vanity slaves, the heart pt.1&2, heaven and hell, faith, i hate you, and the relevant. those are just a few songs that show kendrick lamar's versatility. Ab Soul is really good as well though.

I was bumpin this at work today and someone said this is "garbage" and it "has no excitement" that it's "just poetry with a beat" . I just looked at them and couldn't help but laugh at them but then I took pity on the people that have no idea what music is. It's a sad truth.
