  • Ahh...can't wait gonna see blast real soon! It looks great and since I'm a total marching band geek and regular band geek I'll love it even if it completely sucks!

  • Who is the lovely lady with the short hair....???

  • ah... if only our dance line girls ran around the field with bed sheets.....

  • i agree, who is the group thats playing this, it has to be some marching band or drum corp

  • @mtfenley I could be wrong... But this is "Star of Indiana" a DCI corps that left the competitive circuit in the early 90s.

  • @heartthrob227 Correct, they left to do try something diffrent, so they formed Blast! in 1993

  • wow amazing song and color guard

  • Are these stars 93 uniforms?

  • awesome uniforms

  • Great!

  • Lord, the canadian brass. What a bunch of pretentious ass-hats... but they sure can play the crap outa their instruments.

  • This kinda reminds me of Winged Victory. But it's Phantom. Confuzzling. But awesome! :D

  • i didnt know canadian brass marched

  • They're not marching. They're the five men in the suits.

The people who are marching are from Brass Theater.

  • The marching performers in this group appear similar to early Star of Indiana Drum & Bugle Corps. Which later turned into Brass Theater with the final product being Blast / Shockwave.

  • Um...I already knew that. I was just responding to another person who thought the people marching were in the Canadian Brass.

  • @tmmyboy124 Not early Star...this is Star AFTER they left the field post 1993.

  • i'd say that on a football field, mellophones are more practical...but indoors, on stage, French horns are very well suited for the job.

  • Who is this??? I'm familiar with Brass Theatre, but not this group... I'm more familiar with Blast...

  • Canadian Brass? They're one of the top brass ensembles in North America, if not the world.

  • Brass Theatre was basically Star of Indiana, right?

  • @Paralda Yes, Star of Indiana become Brass Theater which became Blast!

  • lol i like the beggining horn solo better when its played by 30 phantom regiment sopranos

  • uh i dont

  • good for you?

  • haha...GO PHANTOM!

  • agree!!!!

  • @rreemmzzrruullee actually it was a flugelhorn solo :) and then it was played by 30 sops.

  • @Drag2hand actually... its was the euphonium soloist who first came in with the firebird theme.

  • @TRFpudge13 I don't mean to nitpick, but since everybody in YouTube CLEARLY knows what they're talking about... It was a baritone. Don't be fooled. This was when they marched Kings, and that was definitely a King baritone.

  • @rreemmzzrruullee i cant even express how much i agree with you.

  • @rreemmzzrruullee That solo played by anything but horn is blasphemy.

  • @hodgeeees ok

  • @hodgeeees

Obviously you haven't listened to Phantom's version.

  • @VMFA115Starloric I've heard their versions, old and new. I even saw 2006 live at finals. It was ok...just like the version in this video.

  • Great Show!! 5 star!!!

  • You don't march French horns dude. That's what uphoniums or mellophones are for. Forgive my spelling

  • euphoniums or baritones replace euphoniums

mellophone replace horns, or sometimes marching french horns(ew)

  • i saw some bands in Malaysia marching concert horns, but yea, i wouldn't wanna do it

  • marching french horns also kinda suck but concert horns suck really badly for marching

i saw some band with concert horns at a comp, but they also had flugels :o

  • Flugles are accepted and used in DCI for solos wouldnt look bad for marching at all either

  • our band has been using concert f-horns on the field for over 10 yrs and have been at state marching contests and all judges praise our horn sound not to mention that these are top of the line judges with much corps experience!

  • concert horns dont carry sound well on the field. plus they are inconvenient to march. mellos or concert horns are pretty much all ive seen

  • All without the least bit of alto brass sound audible to the audience or the judges....congrats!!!!

  • Sound.

  • DCI should march french horns =)

  • mellophones are nearly the same instrument..

  • dci used to march french horns.. well at least phantom did. not sure about others but they thought it was too hard because they have smaller mouthpieces than mellos. i do like mellophones but french horns just sound so much better. mellophones can get louder too so i get why they use them.

  • mellophones are closer to cornet, espciially the wrap

frenches have a more conical bore, larger, bell, rotor valves hand in bell

  • mello sound is more appropriate for drum corps

  • i think phantom's rendition is awesome, better than this of course not dissing it but i think phantom played it better

  • its a totally different style/arrangement, i think its uncomparable. phantoms version was meant to blow your face off lol and they def. did that haha. this one is supposed to be a more pretty and lucious sound, which they definitly pulled off. you cant diss either group, they both did great like you said

  • definitely, this is cool, but im heavy into the dci thing so i prefer that! if we tried to dissect it, they aren't comparable but yeah!!!!! i just dig phantoms sound on each individual instrument more than these guys but to each his own right?!?!?!?!?!

  • These guys indeed have better tone than Phantom's arrangement. But, Phantom was outside, so it took more air to play. Therefore, their tone wasn't as good. When you tend to play louder, your vibrato goes out the window.

  • Phantom was pretty much running while playing too...

  • Its called Jazz running you don't bounce but you cover a lot of ground fast phantom has really good technique so jazz running with a french horn though hard is not impossible and you wouldn't be in phantom if you couldn't already do it well

  • ???French horns??????

Oh dear, that would be a disaster.

  • excuse me thesousabone? what's your issue with horns my good sir? You think we can't march or something? You see here that it is possible. maybe difficult, but posible and a much better sound than a mellophone.

  • excuse me captain idiocy. I have no problems with horns. The question was, " why is marching horns better than mellos?" I said sound. Meaning that They do sound better. you should really read before you type. There's a backspace button for a reason.

  • unless you are refering to my other post about jazz running with them. Have you ever actually had to jazz run? It's rather exerting with a bell front horn. I know there is no problem marching horns. Jazz running with them would be a totally different story. and as I said, a disaster.

  • I apologize for the misunderstanding buddy. and yes, i have tried to jazz run with a horn. tried.

  • haha yeah it must've been pretty terrible. I can't even imagine it.

  • Horns have worse sound because of bell direction for marching and french horn sound isnt really wanted in most corps or bands. Most want a louder sound with lots of core and power.

  • please read previous posts before trying to sound intelligent. I already stated this, and now you just look like an idiot.

  • so then what's the use of a mellophone on the field if it doesn't sound like a horn...it sounds like a really flat trumpet!

  • hahahahahaahaa french horn. and yeah, its hard

  • My school did this for our 2007 show and we did this good! But we used Melaphones instead of actual french horns....I could never imagine having to use my concert horn during marching season!!!

  • I doubt you did as WELL (not good) as the Canadian Brass and Star. After all they are the BEST in the business. Not to dis your school or anything, but yeah

  • I don't know if this was the best...but Phantom Regiment was the best that I've found (2007 closer- DCI)

  • Where are the stringinstruments?

  • Canadian BRASS.

  • This is actually Brass Theater III, 1996. :)

  • OMG!

  • Man... that was a show...

    Love me some Firebird!

    LOVE ME SOME STAR!!

  • Nice version - hearing the beautiful harmonies in the wedding-procession finale is a special treat. But! - the volume is too low!

  • i like phantom regiments firebird better :D it was LOUDER AND LOUD IS GOOD :D

  • @Shoe58 Considering PRs brass line is almost twice this size...I would hope it would be louder.

  • Canadian Brass came to my school and played with us for like.. an hour cuz we were playing one of their songs. Kinda fun :)

  • Nice dancing. Not the best firebird I've heard, but always a pleasure to hear it.

  • a favored song of mine well done n the dancers were quite well.

im a trumpet player myself and around 1:10 they cresch. into it amazingly

    especially with the accelerando

  • amazing, as soon as i saw this i thought Phantom regiment 2007. But this is s beautiful piece. Wonderful!

  • I've never heard of this Brass Theatre. Does it have any affiliation to drum corps?

  • Star of Indiana left DCI after the '93 season and toured the next 3 summers with the Canadian Brass doing this Brass Theater. It is what eventually led to "Blast!" on broadway

  • Thanks. I knew that Star eventually became "Blast!" but had no knowledge of these performances. Very interesting!

  • Yeah they were all amazing performances. They did alot of drum corps classics. I attended the first meeting when they decided to do it because I was at Indiana University and had tried out for Star the previous year. I kinda wished I had done it. Oh well. Time for Star to come back to DCI!!!

  • yea, I wish star came back to DCI too... :(

O well, they did their part.. :)

  • yeah, I dunno. I think BD had a vetter designed and more kinestetic show, but it didn't strike me as a show that should have one, but they just put it together really well. It's just not of those shows that I would watch over and over again...

  • yea, you a drum corps fan?

  • Yea, Really big fan of BD and PR, lol... ^O^

I thought PR should have won even though BD did... :]

  • Man, this song played by them just sounds wonderful... :)

  • MAN, I LOVE CANADIAN BRASS... ^O^

  • Check out 2007 Phantom Regiment at the end of their show entitled "On Air"

  • Yea, I have it, I love it, I like their second ending rather than their first!

  • Where's the infernal dance and lullaby?

  • my marching band played this last year, and we formed a giant firebird on the field, it was a pain in the butt, but it was sweet. thats what i was expecting

  • this is horrible the ochestra at my band camp played this except that the horn part had glisciatos in the part-sounded much better

  • You left out the part about it being a middle school band camp.

  • Wow. You are ignorant. You are probably a last chair freshman triangle player :P

  • The colorguard .. are SO IN SYNC!! I love it.

  • This piece would have been much more exciting with better choreography. Already at the beginning the dancers are already moving as much as they do at the climax. The music drastically changes dynamics but the dancers don't; they just pick up bigger flags and keep twirling around the stage. In the beginning they should not be moving so much so that when the percussion comes in they can really show us all they've got. That would truly be an explosion on stage.

  • It does justice to an already great piece of music!

  • Thanks for the memory... I gotta go dust off my video!!!

  • Stravinsky arrangment is good. Voicing at the end is very difficult for intonation. Good show.

  • Is this what happened to Star of Indiana? I marched Star in 85 (lead sop)and always wondered happened.

  • yes after the 1993 season Star of Indiana left the field and joined up with the Canadian Brass to form Brass Teatre ( which is what this video is from ) then a few years after that they started what is now known as BLAST over in London and has been a worldwide sensation.

  • Thanks for the info! After finals in 85 I went on to play in the US Marine D&B. After one year I couldn't stand it anymore. I always look back on my days in Star with fond memories.

  • so, you were with Truman Crawford for a bit?

  • The dancing is annoying and irrelevant, otherwise nicely done.

  • Yea I remember playing this with the canadian brass.. I can't believe this video turned up. I wish the beginning of it was on here that was a really cool effect that we did to start the piece.

  • Interesant

  • Simply Amazing

  • I remember watching this with my jaw on the ground. Absolutely brilliant.
