his voice is so busted up from chain smoking...Listen to his voice when he was in whiskeytown compared to this..he can barely hit any of the notes on this song

This is around the time when he was messed up on drugs. He sounds better now.

he is also live. there is certainly a difference. i don't think many of letterman's guests use a tape.

the smoking sure doesn't help, but he could have other things going on. looks like he has sidewash without ear monitors. he might not be able to hear when he misses notes.

Not to mention studios are notorious for having poor sound, as they have no natural acoustics (usually) which is why everyone usually sounds poorer
