How is it possible that they sound so good live? What a fantastic tight group of musicians. I can't believe how easy Karen makes it look. Wow!, such talent.
Totally amazing! There is more talent on that stage than most of today's performers combined. The composer of these songs is also in a very special class too. Some where the train came of the tracks. Thank you YouTube, for giving us a place where we can enjoy the great performers.
And to think that the ticket prices in '72 might have been $7.50 or so. Now one pays $75.00 (and up) to see tripe like Lady Agag (Gaga)! (Agag was the Amelekite king that Samuel "hew to pieces" in I Samuel - She had to get her name from somewhere!)
And Richard doesn't want to release this ( or any live performance)?? I'd love to see a cleaned up/digitally re-mastered/whatever they do these days copy of this concert. This is arguably (everything is always arguable) the best 11 live musical minutes ever filmed. Karen is flawless.
@greenwich1754 I totally agree. I think if the masters of this still exist, a recording should be put in the Smithsonian. This is a benchmark of popular music perfection. I love how Doug Strawn and others in the band play their instruments perfectly and multi-task back and forth between the vocals flawlessly. Imagine the goosebumps in the live audience during this - you can tell by the cheering at the end they knew they'd just heard something special.
No one can compare to Karen's range and musical IQ. No mistakes, never a missed beat, never off beat. A complete virtuoso. Let me know who else can keep a beat on the drums with such effortless talent and sing like a gift from heaven. Some can sing, some can play instruments, but so few can do both with the range and talent of this girl. I agree with Dionne, Ellvis, Elton, and Ella; she had the greatest voice for a pop singer, ever. No doubt. About. IIt.
I love this Concert because Karen is healthy and the Carpenters are at the absolute zenith of their glory. Karen drumming/singing and Richard the Genius, it's just pure magic. I wish I could freeze this moment in time for Karen especially.
What a treat to watch this vintage clip of a LIVE Carpenters concert with no lip-synching, as we see often see in their TV & music video appearances. And to see Karen at her happiest, singing and playing her beloved drums. This Bacharach Medley is one of my Carpenter favorites, and when I watch this, I pretend I'm back in '72 in the Aussie audience, enjoying this live Carpenter performance!
Timeless. No question she was the most talented female performer of her generation. Oh and not to bad on the drums either. I'd like to the turn the clock back to a time when music had meaning.
This is superior - as good as any live performance I've seen by ANYONE - that vocal mix at the end gave me goosebumps. How can Karen play drums like that AND sing perfectly at the same time?? She hits every note high and low on those complex Bacharach runs no less. And then Richard with the genius arrangements and a hella talented band. Well that's why there was no one like them and there never will be again. Thanks SO much for sharing these gems! Carpenters #1 4-EVER!
see her hold up the cowbells to Doug showing she didn't drop them reaching for it off her microphone stand at the transition from Breaking up is hard to Do & Always something there to remind Me...I just love watching Karen perform...absolutely fabulous...
I miss her voice so much! There wil never be another Karen Carpenter. She left the earth too soon. She was reportedly a great drummer, too. I don't see how anyone plays the drums and sing at the me time. It must take great coordination.

Karen on drums always is PURE JOY. Never tired to see her.
By this time, 1972 Karen shares de SAME drum set with Jim Anthony (he's behind her playing bongoes).
