It is a slow camera because it shooting raw! The g9 and G10 are amazing cameras (I have used both) the DP1 and 2 though, there really is something extremely classy about them. I am still dialing in my SD 14 so if any users out there that have hit the sweet spot please get in touch!
GREAT effort i must say. thanks very much for sharing those information, and Carl you are so good at making ppl laugh, you've got nice personality, and this review is so very amusing and fun. thanks m8!
You're funny! I say everything you really need to know about speed. Don't I? Screen is totally OK by me, I don't like it in bright sunlight - but it's hardly an everyday issue, is it? And I'm no professional reviewer either, never said I am. But I do have a great time with my DP's. That's for sure.
one (-) of this camera is, that it has only one lens position.. sigma shoud build something with at least 28/50/80mm equivalent.. I guess they are preparing one teleconverter for this, but.. ehm.. dslr is better :)
DAMN!!!! Great camera but why do they all make them with fixed screens!! It doesnt'make any sense to me! it's almost like walking around with dslr squinting through this little stinking hole in them. I have 20d which is awesome camera but in my holiday i take a610 o g3 because of their tilting screen feature. This totally basic feature for so callef P&S for me!!!! I wouldn't make half of the picture i took if hadn't this in my cameras!!!! I want to move on from my battered a610/g3 but I cant!
Can someone recomend which camera to get a Canon G9 or Sigma Dp1. I own a 4mp point and shoot Canon but now want to upgrade to a manual control camera without the weight of a dslr. Pls help by anyone who has tested both cameras!
Yeah, I'd like to try one. I saw someone doing sort of the same thing but other way around. Making it even more wide angle. Great results. I think it was Felix at the Sigma forum..
In discussions there has been some complaining about the f/4 lens right?
Dont you think they could have made a compact faster (f/2.8 or something) lens if they made it not so wideangle? Lets say equal to 50mm or something? Maybe on DP2 or DP3 there will be a fixed 50mm?
Wide angle is very useful (I like it very much) - but how about a two/three set lens? (like Leica) two fixed focals 28mm andn 40mm at F2. :D That would be very cool. Maybe very heavy. F4 is not really problem. You get really nice OOF (not like the small P&S but much more and nicer)
The lens will be a problem for some people I guess :) I do not like to take pictures with flash.. But its the best idea ever, i hate those small sensors and sometimes i hate my huge dslr ;)
I know you are a Sigma-fan, but do you think Canon and others will start to copy this idea now?
And does anyone, or do you Carl, know when this camera will appear in Europe? Cant wait!
Hi Fatstevens. It's already in Europe. I get mail every day more or less from new users. Not sure who has it, but someone have. :)
And I'm not sure if Canon or any other player will go for big sensor. It's a costly business. And they will not be able to sell as many lenses as they would like I guess. But lets hope this is just the start of something new!
well ... sony did it with the R1 ... i look forward to something like an dp1 with non retractable lens and aperture bigger than f2.8 .. i read they made the f4 lense because it would be to big otherwise ... its smaller then an M3, the lens must be smaller because of slightly smaller sensor ... your interview is very funny btw .. thanks for uploading
mmm... I'm salivating! Can you tell me if you have to charge the battery 'in camera', or is there a separate charger -so i can have a spare battery charging while I continue shooting?
Cool thanks! I'm going to a friend's wedding in August and want to take lots of party shots without lugging around my dsrl. I'm hoping my 'real life' photos will put the official photographer's pics to shame ;oP
I'm inching towards buying one, it seems sweet. It'd be nice to be able to have a small camera in the pocket all the time. Lugging the big kit around can become quite tiresome...
since I got mine, the SD14 just collects dust. It will of course get used soon for weddings etc BUT I do use this for more things than I originally intended. It's great for group portraits etc.
Hi Rubbergorilla! What people tend to forget is that this lens is very wide. it's 16.5mm x 1.7mm = 28mm. At 28mm you need between 1/20s - 1/50s to get a sharp hand held shot. High ISO is very clean! so F4 is not a problem! And another part is that the sensor used is SOOO big, trying to get a faster lens introduce other problems which we don't want. and weight and size.
You don't really mention a lot about the f/4 lens, which a lot of people see as a reason not to buy this camera. What can you add to this discussion? I am very interested because I am on the fence.

have you thought of buying a telephoto lens for compact cameras (commonly available on ebay) for the 46mm lens hood thread ?
