Bass performance is actually misunderstood. The most common belief is the more bass, the better (subwoofers, etc). This is not the case. We need to know how these headphones produce the music, not to pump the brains out of your ears. It's more the QUALITY of the bass, not the QUANTITY. Good headphones will give you clean attacks of the bass instruments, alowing you to hear the intricate bass playing. The HD555s will give you the clean bass, not the muddled roar of cheaper headphones.
When I got these headphones I really liked them and the sound they produced, but now they sound really aggressive and have almost no bass reproduction... I have to raise the bass on my Creative Gigaworks T20's btw 50-100% for the audio to be bearable. Prefer the sound of my AKG K416P to these for the last 2 years, but they are not as comfy as the HD555.
At 4.10 when he starts to speak about the tilt, the top end of the silver part on both sides are extemely vulnerable due to the design. So the Part where you extend the headband and the headphone connects break very easy. Let me point out these are very good headphones, comfortable to use for hours at end .. so if you dont mind using tape to hold them together after say 2 months then they are perfect for using at home.
@phishydk They dont need an amp. I use my 598s out of my pc soundcard with no problems. Plenty of volume and detail. If you plan on using them with a laptop, mp3 player, or crappy soundcard you should at least get a portable amp. These are really not meant for low quality music / walking around with though. I havent heard these particular ones but being in the 500 series close enough. These are for listening in a quite home environment.
Looking for a set of headphones with a lot of bass? complete headphone noob but i know Sennheiser are decent and beats are overpriced so i'm going to stay away from the beats, can anyone help?
@vwlolfordlol you're way stupid if you think beats are better than sennheisers. did monster ever make wireless headphones? nope. beats are for people who think they're cool, but really they're stupid cuz they pay over $200 for shitty headphones
@ThouShaltNotComment the bass overpowers EVERYTHING else basically. good for bassheads who have no real appreciation of mid range and highs but bad for everyone else.
@ThouShaltNotComment well the bass is so overpowered if u go for the studios the only work with batteries, they have a really cheap plastic and the main reason its because they are to expensive for some headphones with those things so thats why
@vwlolfordlol really because i've had friends who tried on my sennheiser say it feels comfortable.. you must have big ears and an odd shaped head... or maybe your just a fanboy? I have a friend who has a pair of beats, and actually likes the way mines feels...
@HSTxPR0PH37 I'm 11.. and my head isn't that big.. nor is it odd shaped.. i'm not biased ok? Beats by dre studios aren't BAD, just expensive. people say the dres are BAD but they aren't. JUST expensive
@vwlolfordlol lol your head is still growing lol. they are overpriced because of the name is all. The dres break easy, and my friend has gone thru 2 pairs because the side pieces can't take the beating after a couple of wears. I use my senn's for music, computer, and gaming (with an astro mix amp) and i have gaming friends who used my headphones to compare it with their astro's and they even admitted that mines where actually a comfortable design.
@vwlolfordlol actually no... he doesn't have the solo's, he actually has gone thru 2 pairs of the detox's. and your folks bought you the headphones, lol so your original post that i commented on was for lulz.
But I'm going to change them for another headset. I'd like a headset wich isolates better, are a less massif (because i need something for outside use and/or concentrating while studying). Around the same price range. Anybody has a recommendation ??
@XtremePhysX Never, EVER even give the Dre Beats another look. Those headphones are so hyped up by the hip-pop community and wannabe clique jockies. Trust me, they are at best, subpar compared to hundreds of other headphones.
Im thinking of getting this or sennheiser hd448. Which would be better for use at home and sometimes at school? I listen to pop, rap, hip hop, alternative rock, heavy rock, dubstep, electronic and classical.
I love listening to my albums. I lie on my couch with the TV on mute and listen for an hour or two every night. I want headphones with the best possible sound for $500. Can someone reply, please, with some suggestions?
@AreaCode978 I think the HD 800's are the most expensive, and are considered one of the best headphones in the world, and very highly reviewed for many types of music. They're way over a thousand dollars, though.
The next model are the HD 650's. Looking online, there are places that sell them at $499.95, but you can get it new on Amazon for $400.
I have a good pair of HD 500's I got for free, so an older model, but it's still the best I've ever heard, and I'm broke anyway.
@AreaCode978 I love enjoying albums lying on my bed with the lights out. And my headphones lasted long, too. Still going.
I wouldn't overcomplicate things and spend too many hours on this. You seriously can't go wrong with Sennheiser's, especially considering you can get a much better model than mine. I can't even imagine how better that'd sound.
And if you want, you can get a separate headphone amp, but that might be going overboard. I think you're fine without one.
@TheOneartist That's man. I got some Etymotic ER-4P's, which are ear canals that I mainly bought for riding the subway, and I'm very, very pleased. Later I plan to get some over ears for around my condo.
@Destroysall see his other video about modding a HD555 to a HD595. They added a piece of foam to the HD555 to degrade sound quality, really shady- but awesome if you know it can be modded!
@Destroysall Hey all, I wanted to know real quick, are these headphones good for metal?? I generally listen to everything, but mostly listen to metal (both old and new and many different genres of metal). I don't want my metal to sound like crud, so I just wanted to know if these are good headphones for it before I buy them.
@Destroysall There are good reviews on these cans in head-fi(dot)com. There are a lot of reviews of a lot of headphones and who knows, you might find that there is another headphone that your looking for. Check out head-fi(dot)com. I go there and because of the reviews I got a few headphones from that place and also people sell their headphones for cheaper. =)

@MYsterYmarcus not really if you buy a belt from gucci that cost your £300 its does the same as if you got one from primark or tesco that will cost you the lose change in your pocket i look at them more of a fashion statement than a over priced piece of rubbish if you cared about sound quality you would not just go out there and buy a pair for that much with out doing research and they still sell
I tried Beats Earphones, Worst Piece of crap I've ever expressed into my ears!
TOO Much bass, TOO little Treble and No Clarity. I couldn't even make out the lyrics, and for a Company like Monster I'm pretty much disappointed.
If someone wants something from Monster just by there Products, Not there Product which are also owned by another musician cause they will suck. Like there Monster Turbine series are AMAZING everything else just sucks!
beats are the most overpriced pieces of shit i got a pair of sennheiser hd 228's and people gave me shit cause they wernt BEATZZZ BY DR DRE. Dont waste your money too look good, spend it on a good product.
Hmm im stuck between these and the HD558's they both look amazing sets but i cant find a good review like this on the 558's anywhere was wondeirn if the £30 extra is worth it :/
@Eradoogon The good thing about these headphones is that you can convert them to the more expensive 595's. I don't know if you can do that to the 585's, but that makes the 555's a great deal in my book
You read all those numbers without putting them into perspective. For example the THD and impedance rating that you talk about only make sense when you say what should actually drive these phones (ie. you will not be requiring an amp in most cases).Plus, 15-28k Hz rating doesn't mean anything unless you talk about the frequency response of these headphones (which starts to drop off at around 16k). These are fantastic headphones, but still reading off what is already easily available doesn't help
@timur50 I have the HD202... or at least, I've gone through 2 of them. The sound is great but it's VERY flimsy and the right earcup has a tendency to fail easily.
I've had a lower end Sennheiser that has been with me for about 2 years now but after 8 months of owning it the connections between the ear cup and the jack became torn/frayed. 5 months after that I eventually fixed them myself by sautering the connections back. They still work but I lose sound every so often. Anway I dont want to pay 200€($295) for a pair that will probably have the same problem.
Now if they made HD 555-IIs with say a 4 foot cable then I'd be sold.
@arteelastice Ive got a pair of Sony monitors, they work well. Probably the best pair I've used. I wanted to get Dr. Dres. Yea, they sound excellent, bass heavy, but they seem like they're meant more for looking good. I can get the same quality out of my Sonys, $250 less...
I've got a pair of HD 515's. They sound good, sans some muddy bass. My issue w/them is that the left -phone has a partially blown speaker. It doesn't become noticeable a lot, but I do not want it to worsen. Can I get a different drivehead and put it in, or no? If so, how much would it cost? Also, you said 320 kbps MP3's sound terrible in comparison to records: Do they sound bad judged by themselves (audible distortion/sibilance)?
@yousellouts same with Beats by Dr. Dre users I used to like them but they definitely weren't the best. Neither for their quality or their price. But at the same time most sennheiser products don't provide enough bass. I am going to pick up the sen brides hd25's soon which are a dj headphone so they should cover bass quite well.
Average Skullcandy user:"Hmm... the bass on these distorts too much, these leak so damn badly, these pads are kinda uncomfortable, but they look cool so i'll buy them."
I think they should have made the 3.5mm a screw on, that way the jack (with the 3.5 attached) doesn't look retarded sticking out of your ipod or computer. I know it's stupid to buy headphones like this for and ipod, but im obsessed with sound quality, especially for mah electronic musics.
Some of the shittiest half assed mid fi wannabe headphones I've ever heard. The bass is somehow simultaneously muddy and recessed. The soundstage is more congested than standard iPod buds. They have absolutely no imaging at all. I feel bad for you if you think these are audiophile cans.
@VictorTroska wow you must be a bigger of an audiophile than I am, and I absolutely need high quality sound I previously bought the HD800's and the ultrasone edition 8's
i got mine for 38 $ of ebay

Which Sennheiser Headphone is best for listening to music?
haorengo 9 months ago
I liked the review until you started reviewing the box....lol
Pasky1382 9 months ago
Hmm im stuck between these and the HD558's they both look amazing sets but i cant find a good review like this on the 558's anywhere was wondeirn if the £30 extra is worth it :/
Eradoogon 9 months ago
@Eradoogon The good thing about these headphones is that you can convert them to the more expensive 595's. I don't know if you can do that to the 585's, but that makes the 555's a great deal in my book
Stylizedplayer 9 months ago
Just bought them. free shipping too winwin
Redneckman556 9 months ago
You read all those numbers without putting them into perspective. For example the THD and impedance rating that you talk about only make sense when you say what should actually drive these phones (ie. you will not be requiring an amp in most cases).Plus, 15-28k Hz rating doesn't mean anything unless you talk about the frequency response of these headphones (which starts to drop off at around 16k). These are fantastic headphones, but still reading off what is already easily available doesn't help

what do you think of hd202?
timur50 10 months ago
@timur50 I have the HD202... or at least, I've gone through 2 of them. The sound is great but it's VERY flimsy and the right earcup has a tendency to fail easily.

DO NOT GET BECAUSE OF 10 FOOT CABLE!!!!!!
13THELUCKY13 10 months ago
@13THELUCKY13
?!
Thats perfect! The jack is golden..I can lay down anywhere in the room and still use them..
Dont tell me you get any better earphone, wireless, for less then 200€..
dunjak111 10 months ago
@dunjak111
13THELUCKY13 10 months ago
@13THELUCKY13
Hmm, maybe you sat on the cable, while picking it up?
I am using Sennheiser since 20 years and never had a problem with its reliable workmanship..
dunjak111 10 months ago
@arteelastice Ive got a pair of Sony monitors, they work well. Probably the best pair I've used. I wanted to get Dr. Dres. Yea, they sound excellent, bass heavy, but they seem like they're meant more for looking good. I can get the same quality out of my Sonys, $250 less...
GradyLorenzo 10 months ago
I've got a pair of HD 515's. They sound good, sans some muddy bass. My issue w/them is that the left -phone has a partially blown speaker. It doesn't become noticeable a lot, but I do not want it to worsen. Can I get a different drivehead and put it in, or no? If so, how much would it cost? Also, you said 320 kbps MP3's sound terrible in comparison to records: Do they sound bad judged by themselves (audible distortion/sibilance)?
Nationstatesuser 10 months ago
hey can you tell me if there is a way nto clip a mic on these headphones
yurikpikh28 10 months ago
@yurikpikh28 I am using the HD 555's with a Zalman Clip-On mic. Thick cord on the sennheiser, so clip ons will have no trouble.
GamingPrower 10 months ago
@yousellouts same with Beats by Dr. Dre users I used to like them but they definitely weren't the best. Neither for their quality or their price. But at the same time most sennheiser products don't provide enough bass. I am going to pick up the sen brides hd25's soon which are a dj headphone so they should cover bass quite well.

Average Skullcandy user:"Hmm... the bass on these distorts too much, these leak so damn badly, these pads are kinda uncomfortable, but they look cool so i'll buy them."

@yakooza That... is the most truthful comment I've ever read.
cursedswordsman 5 months ago
I think they should have made the 3.5mm a screw on, that way the jack (with the 3.5 attached) doesn't look retarded sticking out of your ipod or computer. I know it's stupid to buy headphones like this for and ipod, but im obsessed with sound quality, especially for mah electronic musics.
GradyLorenzo 10 months ago
Replaced my hd465 with these.
iSNiPEjust 11 months ago
Some of the shittiest half assed mid fi wannabe headphones I've ever heard. The bass is somehow simultaneously muddy and recessed. The soundstage is more congested than standard iPod buds. They have absolutely no imaging at all. I feel bad for you if you think these are audiophile cans.
