I've been proudly serving for 9 years now in the United States Marine Corps. I am not "dumb" as you state in your comment. During the ongoing downsizing that DOD is tasked with, I see many Sergeants fighting to stay in. They too are not dumb and serve their country proudly. As a former military member myself, I must admit I would at first be hesitant about being in a high stress situation with a physically disabled person. However, he expressly mentioned non-combat roles, and furthermore, given sufficient reassurance that he could preform satisfactorily, I would gladly welcome him into any job, regardless of any disability.
I find sign language so fascinating... I wonder if deaf people conceptualize language and communication the same way as hearing people. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
@haudace Research has shown that they do. People who learn a sign language from birth use it in the same way as spoken language, even in ways that are really surprising. Deaf babies with signing parents will "babble" in sign language, repeating one part of a sign over and over, and native signers who stub their toe will unthinkingly sign an expletive the same way hearing people might unintentionally swear.
he gives me hope, i have partially bad vision in one eye, my other eye is 2 times as strong though. everything else is fine with me other then my left eye which was at fault of the u.s army in fort bliss where i was born. so maybe one day. i can join aswell.. there is always hope.

You have to understand though that in the military you need to be able to shout to each other and communicate. And what happens if an insurgent shoots at you when you aren't expecting, and you don't hear it so you don't react?
@AlexIsSmalll Reading comp fail. He talks about how in Israel the soldiers have NON-COMBAT roles. There are a million jobs which require little-to-no talking. For some archaic reason, our military won't allow deaf people to join at all.

@collegegraduedjr Well trust me, getting false hope is something that the Deaf are used to because that's what all the hearing doctors, speech therapists, teachers, pastors and everyone else told the parents when they had those "deaf kids." Everyone always tries to fix the Deaf, like they're broken. Those "deaf kids" grew up with their parents dragging them to doctors, speech therapists and yes even religious leaders with false hope they'd be cured. But they rose above it.

Wish these changes were starting when I was younger. I always wanted to join the army....my dream was to serve in JAG. Was always told growing up, "you can't, your Deaf!" I refused to accept in my childhood ideology! But once I was older I had to accept they were right. Glad this young man refuse to accept!!!
I agree w/ nitnoy77. Israeli Army do draft almost all its citizens; ones don't pass meds get volunteer option. OK there is unmentionable fact from Vietnam war..rare incidents that some combat soldiers frag or accidently kill druggies or bad officers on combat patrols after few previous warnings 2 incompenents to transfer to rear. Soon US military will face big RIFs and cutbacks..so Keith N is better off to work for DoD or DHS; better HR support for deaf there.
The Israeli Army vs US Army is a bad analogy. It is mandatory to serve in the Israeli Army as an Israeli Citizen so they HAVE to accept you but this is not true for US Citizens.
Still, I don't agree with how our DoD will not allow Deaf people to join. Perhaps this will soon change as we have a lot of disabled Vets coming back that want to remain in the military (but from my understanding are still medically discharged despite their desire to stay in).
Have you guys even watched the whole presentation? He's not seeking an option in a combat role where DUCK is an essential command. He's looking for support roles like mechanic.
@woofiegrrl I agree with what you're saying however in the military, you're a soldier first, your every day job is secondary. Also, being a former military member, I'm familiar with the military atmosphere of everyone being treated the same. He needs an interpreter as well as other ways to cope with his deafness. He has really been fortunate to be with a group of people that understand his plight but I don't think their way of thinking speaks for the rest of the military.
I'm Deaf and I remember some 14 years ago at Career Day at school the RAF had a stall there. A Deaf friend and I approached them and asked if it was possible for us to join up and they said we 'had to beat our deafness first'! Ain't that easy to beat deafness! But I wanted to be a mechanic! have been so disappointed ever since and right now I'm just drifting from job to job and currently unemployed. If I had joined the army back then I'm sure my life would be completey different now!

They will be able to see their teammate and looking out at the same time. If one of them duck, he might already trained to duck also. If Deaf people see something wrong, some of them can use their voice to warn others. You might not be able to understand them unless you get used to their voice.
Recruiting the deaf will accomplish 1 thing, getting people killed. If you can't survive in a combat zone you have no place in the .mil. I appreciate his wanting to serve, however there are plenty of other ways to do so. Real long shot..1st, Fed med laws for mil elistemnt need to be modified allowing some non-combat jobs for deaf soldiers..DSs get brief basic training and restricted to Stateside duties exp few to USAF and USN..It is not realistic for US mil to provide interpreters for deaf soldiers all times.. too expensive. In Israeli army, deaf soldiers are left to their own devices and most of time succeed in their jobs themselves. Yes, there are few deaf Israeli army officers too mostly in MI and PCs.
Like K Nolan's dad said it is a long shot.& we are fighting in global terror war, that is different from conven war. In Israeli army, some deaf soldiers serve in non-combat duties in field and have good chance to be attacked by terrorists.. It has happened to non combat IDF hearing soldiers too often.

Bob Panara of RIT/NTID told me a story about a excellent exp. deaf welder, working on a Pacific island during early WW2. Desperate for any good welders, US Navy took him to USN ship. Due to exc work, deaf welder was transf. to an aircraft carrier..at end, he got honorable discharge and full GI Bill coverage.. very rare exception. Welding is a very critical skill in any military...

If this were the draft, he would not be considered an able-bodied young man and would not be accepted. While there are situations that military members can be put in during combat where hand signs are used or the volume around them is high, there are times when hearing your surroundings is imperative. As a former military member myself, I must admit I would at first be hesitant about being in a high stress situation with a physically disabled person. However, he expressly mentioned non-combat roles, and furthermore, given sufficient reassurance that he could preform satisfactorily, I would gladly welcome him into any job, regardless of any disability.

Deaf babies with signing parents will "babble" in sign language, repeating one part of a sign over and over, and native signers who stub their toe will unthinkingly sign an expletive the same way hearing people might unintentionally swear.

Everyone always tries to fix the Deaf, like they're broken. Those "deaf kids" grew up with their parents dragging them to doctors, speech therapists and yes even religious leaders with false hope they'd be cured. But they rose above it.

I agree w/ nitnoy77. Israeli Army do draft almost all its citizens; ones don't pass meds get volunteer option. OK there is unmentionable fact from Vietnam war..rare incidents that some combat soldiers frag or accidently kill druggies or bad officers on combat patrols after few previous warnings 2 incompenents to transfer to rear. Soon US military will face big RIFs and cutbacks..so Keith N is better off to work for DoD or DHS; better HR support for deaf there.

The Israeli Army vs US Army is a bad analogy. It is mandatory to serve in the Israeli Army as an Israeli Citizen so they HAVE to accept you but this is not true for US Citizens.
Still, I don't agree with how our DoD will not allow Deaf people to join. Perhaps this will soon change as we have a lot of disabled Vets coming back that want to remain in the military (but from my understanding are still medically discharged despite their desire to stay in).

Also, being a former military member, I'm familiar with the military atmosphere of everyone being treated the same. He needs an interpreter as well as other ways to cope with his deafness. He has really been fortunate to be with a group of people that understand his plight but I don't think their way of thinking speaks for the rest of the military.

I'm Deaf and I remember some 14 years ago at Career Day at school the RAF had a stall there. A Deaf friend and I approached them and asked if it was possible for us to join up and they said we 'had to beat our deafness first'! Ain't that easy to beat deafness! But I wanted to be a mechanic! have been so disappointed ever since and right now I'm just drifting from job to job and currently unemployed. If I had joined the army back then I'm sure my life would be completey different now!

When they see something isn't work out, maybe they can figure out to solve it. Maybe Deaf soldiers will need to train more to understand hearing soldiers' way and hearing soldiers will do the same to understand Deaf's way. They will be able to see their teammate and looking out at the same time. If one of them duck, he might already trained to duck also. If Deaf people see something wrong, some of them can use their voice to warn others. You might not be able to understand them unless you get used to their voice.

Recruiting the deaf will accomplish 1 thing, getting people killed. If you can't survive in a combat zone you have no place in the .mil. I appreciate his wanting to serve, however there are plenty of other ways to do so. As reading other comments, read HotPocBoy- Nolan Duck! Bam! Dead. That happened to me during a Army Rotc day FTX at Ft. Drum. It was raining, my HAs were sputtering..I heard a weak whistle arty or HA feedback??..my Squad yelled Jon, get DOWN!! I heard them..too late BOOMM! arty sim dev went off! Umpire decleared us KIAs; SL cursed his bad luck..very sobering experience for me; thats why I am very realistic. Also, I was not allowed in night FTXs.

Bluntly, US has more pressing issues to deal with high unemployment and sagging economy. US military may get severe budget cutbacks soon.. I hate to puncture KN's dream but that is reality now.. Maybe in future, KN's goal may be possible. Keith Nolan is a rare person and is a great motivational speaker to the deaf..Bravo with high hands...Don't give up but be realistic, Keith Nolan...

Real long shot..1st, Fed med laws for mil elistemnt need to be modified allowing some non-combat jobs for deaf soldiers..DSs get brief basic training and restricted to Stateside duties exp few to USAF and USN..It is not realistic for US mil to provide interpreters for deaf soldiers all times.. too expensive. In Israeli army, deaf soldiers are left to their own devices and most of time succeed in their jobs themselves. Yes, there are few deaf Israeli army officers too mostly in MI and PCs.

Like K Nolan's dad said it is a long shot.& we are fighting in global terror war, that is different from conven war. In Israeli army, some deaf soldiers serve in non-combat duties in field and have good chance to be attacked by terrorists.. It has happened to non combat IDF hearing soldiers too often.
KN could get a DoD job with some travels to combat zones; work for Blackwater sec company; or vol teacher at deaf Iraq school with US Army. Really long way to KN's goal.. sorry more comments next

Bob Panara of RIT/NTID told me a story about a excellent exp. deaf welder, working on a Pacific island during early WW2. Desperate for any good welders, US Navy took him to USN ship. Due to exc work, deaf welder was transf. to an aircraft carrier..at end, he got honorable discharge and full GI Bill coverage.. very rare exception. Welding is a very critical skill in any military...

Reply to iswfreddy.. u right that most deaf never been real battlefield..For me JMD, I've had bullets whizz by my head as I wear BTE HAs and witnessed few combat actions as I lived in West Bank, Israel. Also, I heard Scuds and Patriots coming down or going off in 1st Gulf War in Tel Aviv and had to comfort my family during missile attacks in 2nd Leb war. What can u say? I make no fun of KN..Keith Nolan and I have lot in common than you! KN is a very rare deaf person getting real mil skills.

Yes, as ex-deaf EMT and vol USARotc medic, I will go into battle to save soldiers' life with unbearable knowledge that more soldiers may die or battle may be lost due to my hearing probs.& is last resort. To deaf sniper idea,in dark urban area , what if deaf sniper's spotter is killed by enemy countersniper team and DS is being hunted, then what?

MOST OF YOU HAD NEVER BEEN TO REAL Battlefield and it is very LOUD and you can barely hear the soldiers' frantic screams while bullets riddling' anywhere. No difference for deaf soldiers.

While I can sympathize and understand his frustration and his points are valid, when it comes down to it the guys being all jack as s like below me are right. If this were the draft, he would not be considered an able-bodied young man and would not be accepted. While there are situations that military members can be put in during combat where hand signs are used or the volume around them is high, there are times when hearing your surroundings is imperative. I hope he figures something out.

@chitown1966 I wasn't meaning for it to be about race. I was just using an example. I understand the safety issues for himself and others, but I also understand that in training in ROTC he did well.I ALSO understand ROTC is NOT the real thing.. not even close. I agree there are other options and I am sure he knows that too. As for emotions, you seem to be pretty distraught with emotions in some past comments. I respect/understand your position, you are just going about it the wrong way.

@chitown1966 Its okay :D It's the internet.. people read/interrupt things differently and sometimes it's hard to tell without body language or even some sort of vocal variation. And remember, never judge a book by its cover :) and you are very welcome. I understand the price of joining the military in the aspects of being a girl friend or a friend or an immediate family member, etc. So I appreciate all that people do for our country :)

@Hallamfoebell my point was to another person who was trying to compare blacks to someone with a disability. and there is nothing wrong with being a waterboy. The guy can't be a Soldier but he can be a good cvilian contractor or work for the military and support the war fighters. thats all

Interesting that a lot of these commenters(?) can't seem to wrap their heads around the idea of a "non-combat" role. What a shame. But on another note, I hope Nolan gets into the army one day so he can serve his country like he wants to.

@moochaka63537 what job in the Military is a NON Combat job? If you ever fucking served you would know the Army and Marines are all trained in basic Infantry first. Now if he was a musician he can be in the MARINE BAND. Because they are considered professional musicians and do NOT go to bootcamp. I sweear to god people need to quit relying on hollywood liberals to make movies about the Military. Its a different world when you actually serve than watching it on a movie screen.

just like someone who isn't good enough to play for a NFL team, they can be a water boy or some support role.

sorry but you don't qualify. Every man and woman serving needs to atleast know how to use a 'radio' and other commo gear. We can't spend millions of dollars for his disablity on totally new equipment. And didn't he try to get into the navy first? why isn't he taking the sailors to court? He can still probably serve our once great nation in other ways other than being a Soldier. Thanks for trying, Next!

I suppose if it came to a vote, you'd agree with those that are pushing for the impaired of our world to simply have their heads pinched off at birth and disposed of. How about being on a 'range" with his weapon? there are commands he clearly can't hear. He can't do the job and communicate. How about doing PT with his fellow troops and calling cadence? How about standing in a room and someone yells Attention? see if you ever served you would know this little shit. and yeah id pinch all the heads off of liberals.
