the music notes and signals tell me where i go to shoot my foes into oblivion. its engraved into my heart. remember i plugged in controller 2 while my dad played but i thought i was helping haha...ya i was like pre-preschool ha
Use to love playing this game as a kid got the Rom for it now adays :D played it about a year ago still a tough game and that last battle took ages to do lol
Men i lovde playing this game, i just didn't remember its name i played a japanese version with the name of 1942 or something like that, thanks for remembering me... going to play it asap
@nintygaming It's not about what the hardware is, just how you use it. Go look at some C64 demos if you don't believe me. The SNES sound great when used right, and so did the Genesis.
@nevarezga try the extra hard mode. To activate it you must press select + x while hiting left on the d-pad (or was it right?) anywho, try it out... it blows one's mind
i remember playing this, i absolutely LOVED the game. i would spend hours playing it at home while every other kid was playing their stupid xbox or ps2. (btw it was already 21st century)
I was still playing N64 in 2004 and that was the year I got a PS2. Though, I barely play my PS2...However, I still play the older game systems, SNES/NES/Sega Genesis than these newer systems. After PSX/N64/Dreamcast/Saturn, the spark of video games just died out. Now, gaming is all about graphics and people talking sh*t on PSN or XBLA. It is worth mentioning, the horrendous Xbox and PlayStation fanboys which makes the gaming scene bad.
I'm glad ur not the only one....I still play my NES, SNES, Genesis, and PS1 more than the recent game systems. Don't get me wrong, the new systems are good, but nothing will ever beat the classics.
I agree. After 3 dimensions hit video gaming, the video game cult following died down drastically. There's a reason The NES sold 61 million copies, and then the super nintendo sold just under 50 million, N64 at 30 million, the gamecube at 21 million.
Yep. But it's worth mentioning, some of us who played video games for a while are starting to miss 2D gaming because that was when the good times of gaming were.
@kibjohn I tottaly agree, I used to play alot of these old games and I still think they are the best of todays games, now everything is about graphics and sales not about bringing pleasure to the ones that are playing
lol this game was the shit back in the day. but up until recently i used to think shin was a chick haha!^_^ does anyone remember the second one where you can fly an f-18 in blue angels insignia?
I love the music in this game so much...I actually think I can say with confidence that this is some of the best music in video game history. It's absolutely epic!
In my opinion this game has the best music on any game on the SNES, it creates the tension and the atmosphere, as well as putting the pressure on when the bosses slide into view. Best tune is possibly vs. MINKS on the sea level.
ah, area 88 that airbase of theirs was always doomed
at least that's where they took the design from, There was this fun lop at the end where the supply trucks would loop, so you could stack up on more and more cash
This game brings so many different emotions to me... I remember when I was very young (like 7) and me and my Dad went to the store and bought this game for my grandfather since he was in his last days fighting colon cancer. Me, my Dad, and my Grandfather would play this together and swap controllers and have a blast. My Grandfather served in the air force so we figured he would love this game, and he did. He lost the fight against cancer 2 months later, but my memories playing this with him live
I loved this game when I was a kid. I remembered buying this shortly after landing my first part-time job. I also remembered how disappointed I was in Gradius 3 when it was released for the SNES after playing U.N. Squadron. U.N. Squadron, Contra 3, Axelay and Castlevania 4 were my favorite side scrollers for the Super NES.
Why isn't this available for Virtual console on the Wii? I'd grab it without a second thought. It had good music, a decent shoot-em-up and was fun to play.
First, there was the manga named Area 88, which were made between 1979 and 1986. Then, between 1985 and '86, three OVA's based on the manga were released. Even later, in 1989, an arcade game named Area 88 was made, which was ported onto the Super Nintendo in 1991.
And last, but not least, the anime series named Area 88 was made.
Thanks! :) This game has to be one of the best games ever made! :) I hope they will put it op on the wii shop! Music alone is/was nothing short of brilliant!
This game needs a port to the xbox or ps3, it'd be awesome to play it again.

God I love this music - some of the best music I've heard on the SNES.
U.N. Squadron also had some really good SFX, too - like the sound when you drop a standard Bomb or fire off a Bullpup, etc.
Smooth, intense and challenging gameplay, slick graphics/animations, and a wicked soundtrack... never understood why this game is so underrated.
