The new Pete costume ranks right up there with the "new Coke" fiasco of years back. Why mess with a good thing. As an alum, happy to have our old Pete back!
As a two-time Purdue alum (BS, BA 2001), I think it's fun to see the marketing department toil in vane to justify their existence. From across the field I'm sure there is little difference, but upon closer inspection we learn that Pete has been replaced with a plush impostor.
I heard Real Pete is buried between the Howitzer and the university's nuts which, coincidentally, were the only parts of the university that Beering, Jischke, and Cordova weren't able to sell to the highest bidder.
I actually applaud this university, as a Krannert School of Management alumnus, I have noted two major moves that have pissed off the vast majority of the Purdue family. 1. The Makers, all campaign that was almost universally hated and 2. the changing of Purdue Pete to this embarrassment. Congratulations Purdue, you are ensuring that I never give money to you! Keep up the good work and maybe all the good students will go to IU and our university will suck!
Sorry but this new Purdue Pete really has to go! He looks cartoonish, outdated, SCARY, and cheap!! Not sure why so much money and time was wasted on this...very dissapointing! and as mentioned by others before don't fix what isn't broken!!! Oh and last time I checked our colors were Gold and Black NOT silver!!
The helmet is different, not horrible, but the body suit thing is horrible. they look like cheap pajamas. The eyebrows and hair are really strange. I'm not sure what it is but they make Pete look creepier than before. Also, bring back the old hammer and the old helmet. get rid of the puffy shoes. I liked that you could see the person who was Pete. it made Pete look like one of the players. Seriously, change it before the season starts. It will be cheaper to stick with just the head.
Reading an article in the Exponent this morning, the athletic department (I forget who said it, but I know it was not Burke) said that the new Pete was well-received. I'm not sure what their definition of well-received is judging by here, the Athletic Department's facebook page, and the boos at the spring game.
it just looks like every thing used to make this mascot is generic and cheap looking, regardless of how much it costs us. doesn't look heroic. looks like Wal-Mart dressed him in sweatpants and a logo T.
I can see how change is good, however, I really don't think they thought this change through. The mascot's attire detracts from the success of Purdue.
Awful. That's about all I can say. The helmet color is wrong. The face is too doughboy-ish, it should be chiseled. The arms look fake. The shoes look odd. His hammer now looks like a croquet mallet. Fail!
Aviation Technology students made the current Pete's head about 15-20 years ago. If the current heads are worn out, how about having the composite lab make more? Check the basement of the AvTech building; the molds may still be there.
I plan to share my disappointment with Morgan Burke duri
on top of everything else (the foam arms, silver helmet, Sparty look alike), I just can't believe that the old gold t-shirt is part of the official mascot uniform... who looked at this and decided it was an improvement from the current Pete?
My compromise suggestion: Go ahead and keep the costume cloth, but make Pete's face/head look VERY similar to the old one. In doing so, fans and kids will still be able to recognize him as the Pete they’ve always known and loved, but at the same time it will sort of bring the costume into the 21st century. I would also suggest that the helmet be interchangeable. Being the outfit is cloth, this should be easy to achieve with either Velcro or snaps, then different color helmets could be used.
Garbage. Pure garbage. Being a life long Boiler, this makes me absolutely DESPISE the team name. After the Painter Fiasco, The Administration made another HUGE mistake.
you know when you see the super-hero costumes at Halloween and they have the cheap-looking foam muscles? Yea...that and the fact that he looks like a Muppet
Wow. Congratulations! The Purdue Pete mascot now looks as lame as all the other collegiate mascots. As a Purdue alum, this new incarnation is an embarrassment.
I didn't realize how much I liked the old Pete until I saw the new one.

As a Purdue alum, I must say I don't agree with the new Purdue Pete. The old Pete was just as bad though. He looks like the elephant man.
Take a step back and look at our current costume. It's an enormous, freakishly scary head made of some hard plastic material. We lose either way.

I'm sure we could have bought a cabbage patch doll for a lot less money than it took to create this prototype..... and it would look the same.
Cheap & Embarrassing. Anyway, congratulations the new mascot may be really, really ugly but it definitely isn't scary.

1. It just generally looks awful
2. When the hell did silver become one of our school colors?! BLACK and GOLD
3. you shouldn't be worrying if the mascot scares little kids, they don't go to school here, I do, and now the mascot sucks
tobias91ish 10 months ago
The face is okay, not great. Too Jay Leno-ish, but now that I think about it old Purdue Pete does resemble Rocky Dennis.
But the outfit is terrible. Raggedy gold t-shirt. Silver Hat. Awkward looking shoes and pants...

The old Purdue Pete wasn't perfect, but I don't think anybody honestly believes this is an improvement...

Horrible! Once again another wast of money. I would rather keep the "Makers All" campaign than this awful idea.

Pete needs to take his hammer and use it on whoever approved this redesign.
