@mnorth1 You're welcome. I also realize that there is a album by Buddy Miles called Them Changes. Maybe it came before the Hendrix album, but BM plays on that too. Bobby McFerrin does a cover on it on his album "Simple Pleasures" (one of my favorites, check it out). It's a catchy phrase so I understand why it stuck!
Jaco looks like a Street Performer! I love how he once stated in an interview "What does "I read a little bit " mean? it means you can't read ! i read everything i can get my hands on ."
This band is so fucking boring from a songwriter perspective!!!! This is the typical EGO band. All solo all the time and no structure. They can all play well but have no concept of what a song is, it would be better if any of them knew how to take a fucking break for one fucking measure or god forbide longer!! Makes me sea sick to listen to such cock sure, no substance music. Genius???? WTF??? Rubish!
@sstan1337 Since you feel so strongly about this, what is your idea of good band interaction and dynamics ? As far as song writing goes they ARE famous! Funny thing is my Dad who is 82 thinks "Birdland" was written by "Manhattan Transfer" lol He also thinks "Yesterday" was written by "Somebody who probably isn't the Beatles"
@gerharddll AWWWWHH does your pussy hurt now? The comment section is for "comments". It doesn´t say "praise section" btw I think something is wrong with your caps key.

When I watch this video I can't help but relate it to the events in his life. In the beginning, he is on top, one of the best of his trade. Happy too. When it hits 2:40, I start to think of his mental collapse and the battle he fought to keep it together. 4:11, his swan song. 4:48, his tragic end. Call me crazy, but this is what I think of when I watch this.
I wish I had a dollar for every harmonic he played in his career. Don't want to hate but his solos are very one-trick-pony'ish with effects filling in for the rest. I wish I could have known him so I could ask what it was he saw or conceptualizes when he plays these solos.
If you had paid better attention to my post, it says I wish I could have known him better to learn about his thought processes because I am genuinely curious. As far as the one-trick-pony comment, its my view of his solos. Having a varying musical appreciation which has grown over the last 35 years has been invaluable to me and those in my musical circles. Having played 1st clarinet, guitar, and bass Ive learned a lot over these years. Sorry about you being all butt-hurt
I'm well aware of you what you said. I was only addressing the section of your post where you called his solos one-trick-ponyish, a statement I find ridiculous. This led me to ask a question which you still haven't answered, so I'll ask again: How many of Jaco's solos have you listened to in order to form this opinion?
I will concede that I dont have an expansive library of his material although I am familiar enough to form an opinion. I will also reinforce that his style isnt something that appeals to me. It was only an expression of opinion. I also understand your viewpoint where it seems I attacked one of your favorite artists. Im quite familiar with that position. I will say that if you check out the solos available on youtube, they are all of a familiar pattern which affects judgement
I will also confirm that his playing style within any given song is something to appreciate, I just dont dig his soloing. Its all good though bro. We cant all have the same opinion of something.
You still haven't answered my question. Why are you avoiding it? I'm suspecting that you're basing your opinion on the first couple of youtube videos you happened to run into.
@dannyjerome0 this a just, this is a very great comment. it isnt often that you see such a display of cleverness and just, genius such as this on youtube. that comment, is pure, in its rawest form, youtube gold.
I was lucky to see him do something similar in Houston during a Weather Report concert in the old Music Hall (now gone) that was once the Houston Symphony's venue long ago. The acoustics were great in there. During his solo while the band took a break, he went through many changes like this, then ended up with about 3 loops going simultaneously, then set the bass on the floor, a quick bow and then offstage, leaving the loops playing with the spotlight on the bass. Unexpected and blew my mind.

@dragmio I can see why you feel this way. But with drug abuse, you have to have hit bottom and WANT help before you can get it and be open to its healing. Add bipolarity to that and you have a potentially deadly combination...which, unfortunately, contributed to his undoing. Those of us who are recovering addicts and recovering from mental disorders understand this completely...and we still love Jaco.
@PrZemek44 That's an interesting outlook you have there. Wish I could AGREE with it, but you're entitled to your belief. You sound like an intelligent person, though, and I think--for one reason/set of reasons or another--even the best bands eventually implode and walk off into history. Jaco had drug & psychological problems that consumed him and snuffed out his life at an early age, & those of us who loved him miss him profoundly. Forgive him & move on with your life.
@RitchieBrinckmore Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only person on this planet who still says "groovy." That's so far out. I still flash people the peace symbol, too. Some fads should never have gone out of style. :-)
@TheSkraelings No, I'd say earlbig is STUPID. Ignorance means not knowing any better until you're informed. Stupid means already knowing better but going ahead with it anyway. What the fuck's wrong with using cool effects to enhance a really ass-kicking solo? Jeezus......
@frauirmabunt Yeah they do actually!! But maybe it takes a bit training to listen to it.... I don't suppose you had expected a Rihanna interpretation....
for obnoxiousbob: maybe you wouldn't be so quick to crap on his memory (only the greatest bass player ever) if you knew he was bipolar to the nth degree. Ya I know, the drugs didn't help but you cant take away from his talent.
these passages are from page #17 of The Companions of Jehu written by Alexandre Dumas pere--"Sir, I have heard speak of the Companions of Jesus," replied the magistrate with his jeering smile. That is not what I am seeking, sir."....Elisha consecrated Jehu King of Israel, on condition that he exterminate the house of Ahab; Elisha was Louis XVIII; Jehu was Cadoudal; the house of Ahab, the Revolution.
@ShakeYourCarBass Well some of it is improvised but here's what he did. this whole solo piece is known as "Slang"
but he starts of jamming and goes and quotes the intro from Blind Faith's "Had to Cry to today" and then eventually flows into Buddy Miles's "Them Changes". After he gets done with that he turns the distortion on and Goes in the Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun" going into is signature harmonic riff overlayed with disortion. he then goes in the "The Hills are Alive"
Alright so you know how he plays something and then it starts to repeat? Then he starts jamming with the little lick on repeat? What does he use to make it repeat?
@ShakeYourCarBass you would usually use a loop pedal (Roland/Boss make good ones) to do that, but i think he has a programmable one built in the amp or something, if you listen closely at the beginning you can hear a subtle metronome to help him keep time for the loops
That fan is probably STILL screaming!!! LOL

@ShakeYourCarBass you would usually use a loop pedal (Roland/Boss make good ones) to do that, but i think he has a programmable one built in the amp or something, if you listen closely at the beginning you can hear a subtle metronome to help him keep time for the loops
