  • HAAAAAHHH HE MUST HAVE LIKED THE BAND OF GYPSYS ALBUM

  • look at old no petals

  • Mate you do not stand a chance on american idol.Your to f'n real.

  • Someone owes me new headphones, not to mention ears !

  • Jaco is my freakin hero. Sick performance.

  • I love how he plays the "Them Changes" riff

  • Does anyone know the original son from the riff that is played at 1:45?

  • @mnorth1 It's "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles, from the Band of Gypsys Album.

  • @1221MrT Outstanding!!! Thank you so much- I heard that song played by a street band in 1991, Memphis in May (Beale St) and never forgot it.

  • @mnorth1 You're welcome. I also realize that there is a album by Buddy Miles called Them Changes. Maybe it came before the Hendrix album, but BM plays on that too. Bobby McFerrin does a cover on it on his album "Simple Pleasures" (one of my favorites, check it out). It's a catchy phrase so I understand why it stuck!

  • I bet Jimi would have loved this, including the ultimate foot stomping bass line at 5:01.

  • @jcherryboy i fucking lol'd haha

  • I LOVE THAT VIDEO!

  • no way this is third stone from the sun. sounds really crappy.

  • @Gilmourinski "Third Stone" starts at 2:05. You're right, the rest of it isn't.

  • JACO =THE BEST BASS PLAYER EVER!..

  • best bass player to ever live

  • Jaco looks like a Street Performer! I love how he once stated in an interview "What does "I read a little bit " mean? it means you can't read ! i read everything i can get my hands on ."

  • Jaco plays AMPlifier!

  • lovin the groove at 1.36....

  • This band is so fucking boring from a songwriter perspective!!!! This is the typical EGO band. All solo all the time and no structure. They can all play well but have no concept of what a song is, it would be better if any of them knew how to take a fucking break for one fucking measure or god forbide longer!! Makes me sea sick to listen to such cock sure, no substance music. Genius???? WTF??? Rubish!

  • @sstan1337 Since you feel so strongly about this, what is your idea of good band interaction and dynamics ? As far as song writing goes they ARE famous! Funny thing is my Dad who is 82 thinks "Birdland" was written by "Manhattan Transfer" lol He also thinks "Yesterday" was written by "Somebody who probably isn't the Beatles"

  • @McMinnManiac The Flecktones, for example

  • @sstan1337 MAY BE YOU´D BETTER LISTEN OTHER FUCKIN´ STUPID MUSICIANS AS FAR AS YOUR LIMITED UNDERSTANDING.

  • @gerharddll AWWWWHH does your pussy hurt now? The comment section is for "comments". It doesn´t say "praise section" btw I think something is wrong with your caps key.

  • @sstan1337 Have a listen to "Three Views of a Secret" (Night Passage).

  • Jaco was a fuckin' GENIUS!.....

  • How did he loop that bass groove at the beginning? It says this was recorded in '78… did they even have digital recording capabilities back then?

  • what thing swichts he off at 2:37 ? a compressor?

  • @ThePeace0815 Switches on you mean? That is the built-in distortion of the Acoustic 360 amp. Godawful sound. The guy who designed it once apologize to me.

  • and yes, the third stone from the Sun is our planet... EARTH!!

  • God I love the sound of his bass. what effect is he using at 3:45? like what is the name of that effect

  • @alexstewiecrlsn It's called a flanger. I had one made by ADA that sounded like that.

  • I'd flip out as badly as that guy if I were there in person.

  • it is like watching a 70's horror B movie

  • jaco monster bass

  • 4:33 that moment is incredibly beautiful

  • someone had a seizure at the end

  • Genius!!!

Unfortunately for all of us, he perished in a freaky accident...essentially killed by a bouncer...

  • @suchapica cuz he was wasted and was being a dick to the bouncer and would not leave My Brother was there when it happened he said Jaco was a complete jack ass all night dint deserve to die but a complete ass

  • 4:49 WOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO

  • Me encanta, una joya.Pero ese man que grita al final, honestamente parece que estuvieran matando a un animal..

  • Anybody know where he jumps from? I wouldn't put it past him to jump off the top of the amp.

  • prosze o odpowiedz : dlaczego zginal ???

  • I dont think this sounds anything like the original. This sounds better too.

  • the first line is we gotta live together from jimi live at the band of gypsys, then he goes into them changes by buddy miles then to third stone from the sun

  • Min: 3:40!

  • Happy Birthday, Jaco! may you be resting peacefully in heaven

  • Happy Birthday, may God Bless your soul Jaco!!!

  • @3:01 Grind

  • FELIZ CUMPLE GENIO !!! el mas grande sin dudas

  • Jaco Pastorius to Fusion Jazz is like Jimi Hendrix to Rock and Roll!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Osiris3rd i dont kow jaco is the best!! but bootsy colins is the hendrix of the bass.

but you could be 100% right since your just talkin fusion/jazz.

  • @Osiris3rd Right On!!!! This is Awesome!

  • Thank You Mr. Jaco Pastorius for all of the innovative and amazing bass techniques you displayed.

  • i was lucky enough to see weather report w/ jaco..i was front row..right in front of jaco!!!i'll never forget it..when the show started,he came out alone, and started playing the drums...too much...miss joe zawinul too..they were the best!!i also saw jaco solo at a small club w/ his band..u could see everyone was fucked up....what a shame.....

  • When I watch this video I can't help but relate it to the events in his life. In the beginning, he is on top, one of the best of his trade. Happy too. When it hits 2:40, I start to think of his mental collapse and the battle he fought to keep it together. 4:11, his swan song. 4:48, his tragic end. Call me crazy, but this is what I think of when I watch this.

  • @brooklynstudio I just realized that also. For some strange reason.

  • Who are the little girl posters bickering? You guys still in 8th grade? Listen or listen to something else. Or go out and make your own music..

  • 0:28 HIIIIIIIYAAAAAA!

  • I wish I had a dollar for every harmonic he played in his career. Don't want to hate but his solos are very one-trick-pony'ish with effects filling in for the rest. I wish I could have known him so I could ask what it was he saw or conceptualizes when he plays these solos.

  • @Nikkodemis

And what excactly are you basing this off of? A couple of youtube videos?? Thanks for the laugh!

  • @Musicenthusiasm

If you had paid better attention to my post, it says I wish I could have known him better to learn about his thought processes because I am genuinely curious. As far as the one-trick-pony comment, its my view of his solos. Having a varying musical appreciation which has grown over the last 35 years has been invaluable to me and those in my musical circles. Having played 1st clarinet, guitar, and bass Ive learned a lot over these years. Sorry about you being all butt-hurt

  • @Nikkodemis

I'm well aware of you what you said. I was only addressing the section of your post where you called his solos one-trick-ponyish, a statement I find ridiculous. This led me to ask a question which you still haven't answered, so I'll ask again: How many of Jaco's solos have you listened to in order to form this opinion?

  • @Musicenthusiasm

I will concede that I dont have an expansive library of his material although I am familiar enough to form an opinion. I will also reinforce that his style isnt something that appeals to me. It was only an expression of opinion. I also understand your viewpoint where it seems I attacked one of your favorite artists. Im quite familiar with that position. I will say that if you check out the solos available on youtube, they are all of a familiar pattern which affects judgement

  • @Nikkodemis

I have sent you a private message with some more of my opinions regarding this issue as well as some links.

  • @Musicenthusiasm

I will also confirm that his playing style within any given song is something to appreciate, I just dont dig his soloing. Its all good though bro. We cant all have the same opinion of something.

    Peace

  • @Nikkodemis

You still haven't answered my question. Why are you avoiding it? I'm suspecting that you're basing your opinion on the first couple of youtube videos you happened to run into.

  • imagine those fingers in her girlfriend, she will die at the moment!

  • He's in that big stage in the sky....

  • Very hammy indeed.

  • way to awesome

  • what a ham.

  • "Them Changes"...awesome!

  • That lick at 1:31, jeez...

  • I'm from Jacos past... He was a great friend .. many a night this was the norm in my living room in Miami....R.I.P. Jaco ! Peace....

  • Totally fucking ridiculous! Jaco is the best ever!

  • My band opened up for Jaco & he was all that - & more soo cool. He snorted 2 lines of blow & waddled out on stage.

  • lmfao notice that person at the end SCREAMING hahahahaha

  • @dannyjerome0 this a just, this is a very great comment. it isnt often that you see such a display of cleverness and just, genius such as this on youtube. that comment, is pure, in its rawest form, youtube gold.

  • HAHAHA 3:56 wtf Jaco? What did the bass and amp do wrong?

  • Jaco's fingernail clippings could (and probably still can) play bass better than any one in the world. Yes, Les, you too.

  • @compsella Even Billy Sheehan? D:

  • I was lucky to see him do something similar in Houston during a Weather Report concert in the old Music Hall (now gone) that was once the Houston Symphony's venue long ago. The acoustics were great in there. During his solo while the band took a break, he went through many changes like this, then ended up with about 3 loops going simultaneously, then set the bass on the floor, a quick bow and then offstage, leaving the loops playing with the spotlight on the bass. Unexpected and blew my mind.

  • Who knew Jaco could bust some moves too!

  • I'm a bass player, and i can tell you that no one will EVER match this man

  • honestly, i can.t stand this bullshit

  • Jaco P was the shit.

  • And with just 4 strings as well.

  • That was freaking awesome

  • overrated

  • @roman14032 I'm a fan of Jaco,I don't think he's overrated at all.

  • someone in the crowd is a little overexcited even after seeing this.

  • @milliganstratman wonderful, awesome, great comment.

  • How many people want to go out and buy a loop pedal now?

  • @MQRED011

You can you offer me a loop pedal cheap and good?

  • Band of Gypsys riffs oh yeeeaaah!!!!!

  • this is jazz-funk at it's best

  • watch a true master at work

  • Sick bass line 1:44-1:53

  • @MadMfDoom yeah, it´s the riff from "them changes" by hendrix/ band of gypsys

  • @MadMfDoom Jimi Hendrix - Changes =)

  • @MadMfDoom its changes by jimi hendrix

  • @CharlesFungiMuffin Buddy Miles wrote "Changes."

  • @MadMfDoom it's "Them Changes" by Buddy Miles"

  • The off-beat clapping of the audience is KILLING THE FUCKING MOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDD!!!

With that being said, Jaco is a fantastic bass player. This is a legendary performance! 5 STARS!

  • Not only could Jaco deliver on the music - he could dish out the Showtime too!

  • he even got in some Meters...nice...

  • Wow this guy is a natural aha i love from 3:55 - 4:05 :)

  • wow this guys is a natural haha i love from 3:55 - 4:05 :)

  • @terryregnar I am spraying you down generously with my Industrial-Strength can of Troll-B-Gone.

  • @dragmio I can see why you feel this way. But with drug abuse, you have to have hit bottom and WANT help before you can get it and be open to its healing. Add bipolarity to that and you have a potentially deadly combination...which, unfortunately, contributed to his undoing. Those of us who are recovering addicts and recovering from mental disorders understand this completely...and we still love Jaco.

  • @PrZemek44 That's an interesting outlook you have there. Wish I could AGREE with it, but you're entitled to your belief. You sound like an intelligent person, though, and I think--for one reason/set of reasons or another--even the best bands eventually implode and walk off into history. Jaco had drug & psychological problems that consumed him and snuffed out his life at an early age, & those of us who loved him miss him profoundly. Forgive him & move on with your life.

  • @RitchieBrinckmore Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only person on this planet who still says "groovy." That's so far out. I still flash people the peace symbol, too. Some fads should never have gone out of style. :-)

  • @TheSkraelings No, I'd say earlbig is STUPID. Ignorance means not knowing any better until you're informed. Stupid means already knowing better but going ahead with it anyway. What the fuck's wrong with using cool effects to enhance a really ass-kicking solo? Jeezus......

  • Florida redneck.

  • @frauirmabunt Yeah they do actually!! But maybe it takes a bit training to listen to it.... I don't suppose you had expected a Rihanna interpretation....

  • Comment removed

  • for obnoxiousbob: maybe you wouldn't be so quick to crap on his memory (only the greatest bass player ever) if you knew he was bipolar to the nth degree. Ya I know, the drugs didn't help but you cant take away from his talent.

  • @clarod52 I think Stanley Clarke is the greatest bass player ever!!!!!! :D

  • If Jimi and Jaco had played together....

  • @Alejandro08guitar ...the planet would've exploded because of all th greatness in one single stage.

  • @Alejandro08guitar : if pele' and maradona had played together...

  • hey CLOWN its called SLANG and he does a 3rd stone run for JMH -as a tribute

  • Hw was beyond awesome...

  • Too bad this guy was an obnoxious prick and got beaten to death by a bouncer at a bar

  • Thanks!!!

  • Few can dance like that too!:)

  • what a hack.

  • @Fluffyfluffyhead Why do you say that? Please, enlighten us. You obviously are an thoughtful individual.

  • @loladog11 Its just a joke. an inside joke.

  • Comment removed

  • @ShakeYourCarBass Well some of it is improvised but here's what he did. this whole solo piece is known as "Slang"

but he starts of jamming and goes and quotes the intro from Blind Faith's "Had to Cry to today" and then eventually flows into Buddy Miles's "Them Changes". After he gets done with that he turns the distortion on and Goes in the Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun" going into is signature harmonic riff overlayed with disortion. he then goes in the "The Hills are Alive"

  • @jryuwah Thanks for the interpretation!

  • @ShakeYourCarBass from the Sound of Music. When he lays his Bass on the floor he quotes a piece from Portrait of tracy. and it end

btw he puts a bit of Portrait of tracy in that disorted harmonic run

  • WOW... that's some BASS fo yo momma!

  • OK. Now, it's official. I am a talentless hack.

  • @loladog11 naw man...keep on keepin on...its a common stage/feeling when playing an instrument!

  • I saw him do this at the Pasadena Playhouse - Smo - kin - HOT!!!!

  • bass god playing guitar god

  • love u

  • Alright so you know how he plays something and then it starts to repeat? Then he starts jamming with the little lick on repeat? What does he use to make it repeat?

  • @ShakeYourCarBass you would usually use a loop pedal (Roland/Boss make good ones) to do that, but i think he has a programmable one built in the amp or something, if you listen closely at the beginning you can hear a subtle metronome to help him keep time for the loops

  • @CaptainCrunch993 I thought it was just an Echo-Plex...like Joe Walsh used to use..?

  • There is nothiing else after this.....only history

  • Jaco lives.

  • Sounds like he's mixing in some Continuum, and also some Portrait of Tracy at about 3:20.

  • 14 people play guitar

  • Third Stone riff is at about 2:10

  • That is NOT Third Stone From The Sun!!

  • I love 1:45-1:55!!!

  • @MrJadePinwheel which song is that?

  • @lancewdepunk0 Them Changes - Buddy Miles

  • @LightCloth thanks!
