im so upset my herculez has this and i cant get him treatment cuz the vet told me $3000...i already paid 1000 two a year ago for some other surgery he needed. 3000... thats half my tuition for a year. i cant believe this is going to be his end. i watch him every day to make sure he is peeing ok and eating ok.....
I don't know where you live, but the most I ever paid for adrenal surgery here in America was $1000, and that is expensive by most vets' standards. I've paid around $600 for it here in Las Vegas. There is also another option for adrenal ferrets. Lupron injections once monthly will really help with the symptoms. This is usually under $50 per injection.
There's also an implant called deslorelin. I am not sure if it's being sold in the US yet. My vet was going to get it for one of our ferrets, but she died before it arrived. He had to order it from Australia.
I'm so sorry. He seems like quite a sweet heart. I have a question for you... What causes the sores on the skin? My ferret is balding and he has deep sores everywhere on him. He scratches so hard that he cuts himself! I was just wondering what cause the sores.... I can't find anything about it.
You must be looking at those red marks on Bartleby. Those are actually oil spots. Kind of like when humans get blackheads on their face. Bartleby produced a lot of oil when he was adrenal. He was a bit smellier as a result. Adrenal ferrets are itchier, so if your ferret is scratching and giving himself sores, put some Neosporin on them. Try it when he's asleep so he doesn't like it off.
Aww. This video made me tear up. Two of my boys are currently adrenal and it just breaks my heart. Both are surgery candidates, so hopefully it helps. My Sampson looks just like that right now though. Poor thing isn't responding to melatonin or lupron.
He's cute!! It's an unfortunate disease. I hate it. I have yet to meet a ferret that didn't have some symptoms of adrenal disease. I hate this disease so much, that I got all my ferrets implanted with deslorelin implants to hopefully prevent it.
I notice he also has little scabbies on him. Bailey had those because she'd scratch directly on her skin with no fur protection. It was awful! Ever since I started feeding her olive oil with a dropper and putting it on her bald skin I've not seen a single one. HOWEVER, I'm not going to pretend it works for every ferret, it's trial and error, and you're obviously a good fur-baby parent :)
Are you talking about that thing on his shoulder that looks like a brush burn? The vet said that was oily skin. I think they produce more oil when they're adrenal, or at least Bartleby did.
Thank you so much! That's very helpful. Bailey is still such a happy little girl and runs around like crazy just dooking away. I couldn't believe she liked olive oil so much! Then again canola oil is the main ingredient in that ferret hair supplement Marshall has. Her hair looks fantastic. I'm sure that's the melatonin too. I heard Marshall ferrets are 8x more likely to have adrenal because they spay/neuter them much earlier than recommended.
How fast did his hair loss occur? I was pretty sure my ferret had adrenal disease but she didn't lose her fur that quickly. However, we started melatonin treatments that seemed to help some of the symptoms like a swollen vulva, diarrhea, etc. BUT I started feeding her olive+cod liver oil & her hair grew back FAST. She also put her weight back on! She's doing great now but I wonder if she was misdiagnosed.
A swollen vulva can mean adrenal or an incomplete spay in which they don't remove all of the ovaries. The incomplete spay would have left a swollen vulva even after adrenal treatment, or perhaps it would have recurred after initial treatment. I'm not too familiar with it, but chances are that she had adrenal.
Bartleby had adrenal for about three years before I filmed this, so the balding can be a slow process.
Also, Bartleby had one adrenal gland that had protruded into his vena cava (a vein), so it was inoperable and didn't shrink from treatment, so he didn't have a chance to grow much fur.
my ferret has this too and it is very sad. my ferret is very anemick meaning her blood counts are verry low we brought her to the vet but she is on her last leg she has some meds but they are not helping muh. this is very common for ferrets and the best you ould do id give them lots of love and attentionn but sometimes your best bet is to put your ferret to sleep :( i hope this heps people!
I am sad as well, I had 3 ferrets, 2 passed away from Adrenal issues the other had tumors and heart issues. I have a new ferret I adopted from a family with not enough time to play with him. He makes me smile everyday. RIP Bartleby, Fuzzbutt, Taz and Panda
does this happen to every farret or is it just random i am thinking about getting one will it happen for sure or is it just going to happen at a random time in its life? (BTW i am talking about adrenal disease)
@WorseCurve my ferret has this also evey other ferret gets this but if you catch it quick enough(hair loss) and bring him or her to the vet it could easily be cured with surgury when i brought my little one to the vet their was a ferret their that was very beautiful and looked FINE.. i later figured out this ferret got the surgury and it cured it quickly! ferrets are loads of fun and a great pet i would deffenitly get one
I'm sorry for your loss. We just adopted 4 ferrets and I suspect at least 2 are adrenal...1 definitely because she is bald except for head & hindquarters, the 1 male has fur but molted once and is aggressive sometimes and biting the other ferrets hard on neck and not using litter box. I was going to start giving them melatonin. As the disease progresses do they suffer or in pain? They seem fine right now.
They don't really have obvious pain like other diseases give ferrets. I've noticed that they just seem to act older. Usually, they will get fat, especially around their armpits. If your male doesn't curb the aggression after you start treatment, ask your vet about Flutamide. Our adrenal aggressive male is on it, and it really helps his androgen production.
Ok What were some of his signs.my ferret loses hair down the back of his neck.but comes back.it does it off and on.hes got more aggressive we have to separate him from the other two.he grabs their necks and drags or pins them down.he wont let go.
It sounds like adrenal to me. Your ferret may be growing fur back with every season change, but mine that grew and lost fur in certain places (not all over evenly) became adrenal by age four. The scruffing and dragging he does with the females is because his body is wrongly producing hormones, and the disease puts them in overdrive.
@psycho506 =[ hes my baby i love him soo much.what do i do.can i take him and get it fixed.if so will it be alot.and if i dont do anything what can happen.
Take him to a ferret vet, and if he is adrenal, you can either get surgery or get monthly Lupron injections. If you don't treat it, he will basically end up looking like Bartleby in this video and will continue to bite your girls and try to mate with them. They're very painful bites. Another ferret I have named Rocket is doing this to our girls now, and it is nearly impossible to get his jaw off their necks.
im sorry about your ferret. its so sad. one of my ferrets has adrenal disease, they removed his left gland, but the right was too close to the vena cava so they couldnt remove it. hes been on lupron for about 6 months now and so far hes doing great, im just afraid that eventually its not going to work for him anymore. plus i think my other ferret might have it. i just hope its an easier situation, like maybe just the left one is affected. again, im sorry :(
I never even knew my ferret was sick.I woke up 1 morning & found him dead at the bottom of his cage. His name was Skillet & he always played & jumped around till he passed.Sometimes it's really hard 2 tell if a ferrets sick or not.Skillet was bigger than a bread loaf & as furry as a bear.no sneezeing-nothing.then he was gone. The vet wanted 700.00 4 an autopsy.couldnt afford it.I'll never know.& I watched him like a hawk.I know he swallowed nothing.best of food too.i'll never know.RIP SKILLET!!
I am so sorry for your loss. Bartlyby is one of the most cutest ferrets I have ever seen and he reminds me so much of my ferret who passed in September 2009- four months shy of his 7th birthday. He had a tumor in his abdomen that was inoperable due to its size and Peanut's age. This video made me cry and think about how these little guys never give up on trying to have some fun and staying positive even when their health is deteriorating.
Not really. He didn't want a sweater. I just made sure there were lots of blankets around for him to sleep in. They get used to the cold provided it isn't freezing in your house.
Plenty of ferrets don't get adrenal, but unfortunately, it is pretty common. The good news is that most of them respond well to surgery, Lupron, or Melatonin. Bartleby was a rare case because the part of his body causing adrenal disease (the adrenal gland) was in a place it didn't belong, and surgery wasn't possible.
I hear you cry in the background. I know your pain. My little Aslan is wasting away because of this disease. I just don't understand why such a pure, precious creature has to die like this.
Sorry to hear that the disease consumed Bartleby. Our ferret Blanch had it too, we put her down yesterday. We don't know where her tumor was, all we know is we didn't have the money to do a surgery. We did give her the medicine though and that helped quite a bit. But in the end, it seems this disease always wins. Best wishes for you and any other pets you have or may be getting in the future :)
Mine just had bloodwork yesterday and her entire leg is bruised from the vet... its all purple... i think they scruffed her too hard too because her neck is very red... she starts her shots next tues after an ultrasound
This makes me sad....this is how my girl Max looked at the end. It's good to know he's not suffering anymore and is frolicking in the fields at the "Bridge" nipping at everyone's ankles...LOL
im soooo sorry for you i saw the vidow of him stealing treats and fell in love ive always thought they were kinda scary critters but now I want one!!! im VERRY sorry for your loss hes a beautiful angel :)
