Problem is that the English translation really sucked.

I would say at least 15% (sometimes the most important 15%) were "lost in translation" already. Everything is "correct" in that it generally says the same thing as the original... the only things lost were small unimportant things like humor, emphasis and passion.

I don't know how anyone that doesn't speak Chinese will be able to fully appreciate the movie. Enough is lost in the culture gap already. Now, more is lost in translation.

I'm kinda concerned about the English subtitle translations whether it can bridge the true meaning of the story to the audience. It is, of course, easy for people from Taiwan to comprehend what the story and interesting plots are. However, it's gonna be a challenge to cross over the cultural gap. The translator said she has re-done the translation again for Oscar. Hopefully, she does a good job to introduce this great film to the world. TW rocks!

omg this movie is so touching. its really sad between the couple, especially the the lady who didn't know the man she loved loved her so much. the man's letters never got to her any time earlier, not until he died. these letters really effected the main actress(young tomoko) and ah jia(main actor) greatly
