Many years ago, this recording of Kogan playing the Paganini Concerto #1 saved me from major depression, and inspired me to learn the violin! He must have loved this music. As far as I know, no one else can play the violin like this.
Heavenly perfection on the violin. Any violinist wants to play well, Kogan is the one to copy and to try to measure up to. He has everything from the most delicate feminine touch to explosive power. And what an intonation, dynamics, emotions !
Thanks for posting it. If I knew how to play, this would have come out of my instrument. To say Kogan was a genious would be to say nothing. Heart and soul. Devine technique. After listening to this there is nobody left to compare with. Class of his own. Sitting on the Olymp, with lightnings in his hands. "Privet" to his soul.
if you wanna know, who else is that good, hear the recording of kavakos, its about 1,5 minutes faster, but not worse at all, I think, Kavakos is probably the only one, to mess with kogans or heifetz technic, so listen to it if you wanna hear another good one of this, listen to the one of leonidas kavakos...
Does anyone have the sheet music for this edition of the Sauret Cadenza? The one I have differs near the ending from about 4:25-5:25. Not sure which is the original.
@violin957 You are definately ridiculous.Kogan is the best violinist I've ever heard by far.Kavakos is great player but he cannot play like Kogan played.
This is fantastic. But you have to hear the cadenza recording that he did when he (Kogan) won the Queen Elizabeth Competition. It might be hard to believe, but it's on another level from this one. Since it was done live, the energy is very high and Kogan was in brilliant form...not that he's not here. One day I have to figure how to upload it on here. I wish Kogan recorded the Brahms double with Rostropovitch, what a recording that would be!
Only because he displays that false humility that most great classical musicians show in public. I'll be willing to bet that when he wakes up in the morning and looks in the mirror he says, "I'm the greatest violinist that has ever lived!"
Kogan loved Phillipe Hirshhorne's Paganini performance--the Russian violinist who beat out Gidon Kremer--that performance along with it's cadenza is here on YT. Hirshhorne apparently had severe performance anxiety--but was an incredulous Russian violinist--WHAT IS IT WITH THE RUSSIANS??? :)
Their are many great virtuosos but they have to yield to Paganini, I think every one agrees, Leonid Kogan is standing next him, because he got not only his technique but devil's intensity, which I have not detect from others.
sen bütün zamanların en iyi yorumcusu olarak kalacaksın kogan,Tanrı sana bu dünyada adeta ölümsüzlüğü bağışladı,seni dinlemekden hep zevk alacağım cennette kalman dileği ile
His performance of the Shost opus 99 is by far the most compelling I have ever heard. This interpretation is also fantastic, however Michael Rabin for example also played it superbly, and of course Heifetz, Heifetz, Heifetz and Heifetz
agree 1000%. Isnt it interesting that you can hear every single note in this devilishly hard candenza when Kogan plays. But when others paly it (some of them highly esteemed virtuosos), they cant even begin to compare in terms of articulation, cleanliness and phrasing. Nobody better than Kogan IMHO.
Yes, I think so too. He sounds like on good form. It goes off very smoothly! It seems like he is particularly aiming for this, as he sometimes pauses slightly to make sure he has every note spot on, like as a challenge (which it is, of course).
I said to myself about a month or two ago that no one plays or CAN play this cadenza as well as Sarah Chang. Kogan here gives her a run for her money. Nothing less from him though, my favorite violinist next to Perlman
Kogan is in a different league than is Sarah Chang. She is a very talented/gifted musician. Kogan is one of the two or three greatest violinists of the 20th century. Sarah is not even close. However, I respect your opinion - as we are each entitled to our views.
I am aware that Kogan is in a different league. In my opinion, he is the greatest violinist who ever lived, save maybe Paganini, but no one living now has ever heard him. Just because she doesnt measure up to him, however, doesn't mean that he plays every single piece of music better than her
I agree with you on that last point you make. The Sauret cadenza happens to be one of those pieces he plays better than her :) Kogan performed this piece during one of his final performaces at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 1951. It has been repeatedly said that novody since has ever matched that performance of that piece. He owns this piece.
That would be a matter of opinion. And I would be willing to bet that almost no one has heard Chang's Paganini with the Sauret cadenza. I think I ought to upload it when i get the chance.
Yes she is young. That is not the one i am speaking of. Yes it was quite good then, particularly for a 10 year old. My recording of her, however, displays her 15+ extra years of musical experience and maturity.
Leonid Kogan !!!!! su sonido impresionante pujante claro nitido fuerte y un grado de exquisitez admirables de virtuosismo.!

I disagree that sara chang have the best cadenza.
I still think the best 3 one is:
-Salvatore Accardo
-Kogan
-Leonid Kavakos
This 3 is on Youtube, but Sara's isnt... But i got it on DVD... She doesnt play the whole cadenza.
