  • Nice. I do a lot of winter camping. Cant wait to try this. I usually resort to burning my pots and pans over the fire during cold weather because I get frustrated with my alcohol stoves

  • I've had success using methanol (methyl hydrate) in a regular pop-can stove down to about -30 C. In the winter, it has a higher vapor pressure than rubbing alcohol or IPA. Methanol at the camping store or hardware store was also cheaper than denatured ethanol.

  • awesome idea. cant wait to try out the idea just happen to have all that stuff lying around. im in upper michigan where alcohol stoves dont like it much here a great portion of the year. i normaly carry t-lite candles so there is only the extra weight of bean can but perhaps my hobo wood stove could doulbe as this...its made from the exact same bean can seen here... thanks for sharing...

    Great idea!!

  • bravo

  • good video.

  • how do you light the tea candle on a very cold, windy day when you're wearing mittens?

  • Nice design! Could you eliminate the tea light and just put a few drops of fuel on the fiberglass and light it to prime the stove?

  • Nice idea with the tealight.

  • i got a normal can punched holes in it at the bottom and top made a holein the side and put brass wire throungh it and voila a hobo stove

  • Hey there, nice construction!

I messing around with stovce building too from time to time... I have a question... Can i soak the Fiberglass wool with alcohol an use it as an "more durable wick" ?.

I heard about that i can use Stove insulation sealing bands, but these are somewhat hard to come by (or better my hardware store didnt had it in regular stock :S

  • great idea, thanks man

  • That is a great idea!

  • grat idea well done

  • Yes, the old, use a stove to heat a stove trick.

Excellent use of the tea light. Keep up your experiments.

  • one idea. fill stove BEFORE placing the stove over the lit tea light. At Whitney I had no trouble at all in 28F weather. You can carry fuel close to body while hiking. Also remove the rim at the top of your can. Lead is used in the making of the can and piosons the air when you ad heat to the trace amount of lead. Same with the plastic lined in that can.

  • hey mrbrendons....you wrong on the lead....the FDA baned lead from ever being used in the making of containers holding food.

  • Hobo Approved;)

  • Great idea. I'm looking forward to the demo.
