@JetJock410 For those of you who liked this moron's comment you must be ignorant. Wake turbulence is way beyond severe. Just think if the pilot didn't take evasive maneuvers on the encounter. Overrunning the runway? Clipping a portion of the wing? Popping a tire?
This really wasn't that scary. I had a pilot scrape a wing on a landing before. Talk about shit your pants... Then he slammed the throttle and took off again. This old black lady next to me dug her claws into my arm and started praying out loud.... That was not the way I wanted to die.
Was flying back home to Toronto for Christmas on the eve of it a couple of years ago and it was really stormy with lots of snow coming down too. Strong cross winds close to the ground, at one point, a few seconds before the touchdown, the plane was at such an angle that I could almost partially see down the runway :/... and lots of wobbling going on too, but a very soft touchdown none the less! Pilots did an awesome job, made it fun in a way! :P Wish I can get my flying license too someday!
I think anyone who gets scared by landings like these (and it's reasonable to if you're not in the know about flying) might be comforted if they could see the pilot - just sitting there calmly landing the plane, doing their job, like any other landing.
Are you kidding, this pilot did a great job, a nice landing and very good control in lieu of the wake turbulence he/she encountered. Having flown into LGA a bit, this is somewhat common. Severe iss when people get injured and gear gets broken!
Am i kidding about what?? The pilot did do a great job, never said he didnt. Only said that it was scary. If you dont agree, then good for you. Severe, IS when people get injured..but if you read correctly, i never said anything about it being severe, only you did....It was scary to me and others around me.
@s9523pink Yea Seriously. Ive seen worse. This poilot did an excellent job! Try coming to Minneapolis during one of our bad winter storms when visability drops to 1/4th of a mile! Thats a bit nerve raking but scary to me is when something very bad happens like an engine failure or something that would almost kill people.
@bobac1083 My response may seem arrogant but is trully far from it, I have been an airline pilot for some time and before that, flew both dual and single pilot freight...oh and I have been into Minny on those low visibility winter days at the front end doing the approach! Oh I have seen scarey!!
No at all. I totally respect that you are a pilot and you know what you are talking about. I'm certain that most peoples definition of scary is very different than mine. I'm afraid of roller coasters. With that said, I still think this landing was scary from inside the cabin and id be interested to see how close the wingtip came to the deck!
@s9523pink Ive seen scary too. I fly with my uncle in his AC 11 Commander (which he just bought last year) but before that he was renting along with everybody else at his airport. He had to do some normal test and get out of bad situations like stalling. He just had to take me in his Piper Cherokkee and stall it. Man did i get airsick from that.
I wonder if the fact the 757 does not have the inboard (tab) aileron (which is actually a high speed aileron) on the wing like the 747, 767, and 777 has anything to do with this exaggerated roll activity. 757 just has ailerons out near the wingtips (traditional low speed ailerons). Spoilers kick in to help. I remember noticing on 747 landings that the small inboard aileron moves all over the place on approach and landing but provides a certain stability resulting in less roll of the wings.
@herbergreen This wasn't a bad landing. It was just minor turbulence on approach. The other one was a good landing... but should have been a go-around.
Upon further review, looks like pilot induced oscillations (pio) with too much control input on a 757. I've been a passenger and experienced this on a 757 landing in Chicago. It is indeed scary. Look at all the aileron and and more importantly the spoiler movement. Each oscillation gets stronger than each preceding one.
@herbergreen DC-10's, L-1011's, and 767's no longer have scheduled service to LGA, that I know of. Regardless, 757's are often treated "like" a larger twin because of the wake turbulence they produce.
Finally a clip which rightfully carries the title 'scary'. So much ppl put words like scary, dangerous etc. while the landing is rather normal. Experiencing wake turbulence so close to the ground can result in a landing you don't simply walk away' from. Nice video!
Scary landing my ass!! You shithead. You should go ride on one of the Air Crash Investigation planes!! Then you will understand the meaning of a scary landing.
Thumbs up this post if you think this is an everyday landing with some light chop.
@kindjordan Yea, but I'm guessing this is a 757, all the planes are smaller than that and unless a 757 just took off/landed then I don't know how thats possible lol
@kindjordan 757 probably landed in front of you. Those wings produce nasty wake turbulence, equivalent to that of the one's coming from larger twin jets.
@GTboy96 if its a direct headwind then that would a lot better for any landing, in a big commercial jet that is, if that was in a cessna 172 then it would be blown backwards,
I had many landings like this. After many flights you will never say again its scary. The reason is that you have often 30 feet above runway a changing wind. Take a fly in a little Cessna and you will feel it exactly when you get closer to the runway on landing. It's a physical thing and pretty normal
Ive been on a extremely horrible flight from Denver into LGA b4.. never going on a plane again after that. we flew into a extreme lightning storm with very high winds and extreme turbulance. we aborted the landing and we landed very close to other plains. and when we did land, we were flying wayy to close to buildings. everyone was praying. seriously. never fly out of LGA. its a terrible airport.
That's pretty normal to get. I always get that. I can understand it can be scary at first, but you get used to it after awhile. Doesn't even phase me now.
If your plane landed with no gear and exploded into a ball of fire and everyone died apart from you and you managed to walk away, would you really think it was a good landing?

@kindjordan i agree. there are far too many people sitting at the comfort of their own home and computer passing judgment on what's scary and what's not. I've flown a lot and even though this may not look dramatic on video, yes I can see it being a little scary getting hit by some wake turbulence just before you hit pavement. it's a natural reaction. Good video.
Thank you Sausage. I really appreciate you taking the time to point out what many have missed. Yes it might have been routine, Yes, many have had scarier landings, but to me...and most in my section on that plane...it was scary landing!
@kindjordan I see that you knew what approach it was, probably means you've flown or are familiar with planes. If it made you nervous, it would've made me nervous. I've only been on an A320 a couple times, other than that all my air time is in a 152/172.
We encountered some very bad wake turbulence when we landed in Cancun Mexico this summer. He was trying to straighten out for like 10 seconds. Oh Btw Nice Quality.
Respectfully, you don't know what you are talking about.....you still had about a 1,000 feet of runway, you didn't even cross over the other runway......
