Its not a glitch, and its not fake, he probably found the items, crafted the metal without dying, and then died, in which case it will show the metal as a drop, even though you crafted it.

Ok so the alien swarm probably does not normally drop and neither does metal so explain that. The same has happened to me, the game gives you back items you already had, you gain nothing and lose nothing. Would be nice if that happened though :).
