I can get commenting positively about a drummer you really like. But to use that to somehow put down Johnny Rabb is just ignorant. Johnny is an incredible drummer on his own merit and dedicates himself to improvement and teaching others. He also has a super great personality and is very fun to watch play. I have other drummers that I also enjoy very much but I would never use them to speak poorly of Johnny.
I think Jojo Mayer is a considerably better player. He understands more about music, technique, and grooves. he's more coordinated and precise. he timing is a lot better, too.
I wouldn't say "considerably better", but slightly better.
They're both excellent and EXTREMELY groovy and in love with percussion, and they purely show it; I would say they're about equal, with Jojo have an overall slight edge.

i used to be obsessed by jonny rabb but now i can do all his stuff i realise hes abit of a one trick pony. if he didnt use the free hand method he wouldnt hav much.
its caled gravity blast in my opinion i call it gravity roll or go for short its really easy there or tutorials on youtube for it just look up gravity blast ^_^ have fun!!!
i just figured out how to do 1 handed rolls, i was playing a technique i learned from watching shannon lucas, and all i did was just move my hand up to the middle of the stick, so both the front and the back hit the drum, its like 2 sticks in 1 hand
It's actually not the push pull - it's using the rim as the fulcrum. The stick rocks on the rim after the first stroke creating a second stroke on the way back up. It's easy to do, it's very difficult to do it like Rabb
It's not push pull. He explains this technique on some other clinic videos. He does this technique on the cow bell too. He rocks the stick and gets a stroke on the way up and the way down. The push pull is a completely different technique.
why does everyone talk shit about drummers saying that the stuff they play is simple obviously it's not that simple or you would be sitting down giving clinics to thousands of people everyday all drumming is, is small simple patterns played at varied speeds and displaced around a drum set so yes in fact there easy patterns but can you do them i think not
Ya, single handed rolls would be Mangini style if it weren't for the fact the Mangini came after Rabb, and the fact that Buddy Rich did if before they were even born.
& Blu, i don't know wheather I agree that he has better musicality then Thomas Lang. They are both rivals with one another, although they act like friends.
while he might actually be able to do one handed rolls this fast all the one handed rolls he is doing in this video are cheats off the rim not cheating would be using buddy rich's push pull technique im not hating in fact i do it all the time off the rim for the simple fact that its sweet but i just thought maybe someone would want to know in case they wanted to try themselves
I like the little Bonzo sounding reference right at the end while you are twirling... I swear I hear "Rock & Roll" in the last bit of licks...

I remember 1st seeing that technique done by Mike Mangini, but teacher thought i was crazy when I was pulling off insane speeds with it.

It actually is push pull. He does it on the hats...there's no rim on those to use as a fulcrum lol

Gravity blast or push pull?

Gravity blast is not the name of a technique. Its a weird term that metal players use to describe certain types of blast beats.
CheezeyWeezey 2 years ago 2
OK, thanks
ransisua 2 years ago
its the "one-handed roll" according to jojo mayer. he used another term that it goes by but i dont remember what it is.

freehand technic !
morrron5 2 years ago
@mptdrums It's the freehand-technique. Jojo used push-pull, as buddy rich does

yeah. i was making a reference to Jojo's secret weapons dvd, where he explains it and mentions Johnny Rabb.

It's not a push pull. It's the freehand technique. He uses a different technique on this hats.
dannyboy000 3 years ago 2
its not push pull on the hats.... he is bringing the back of the sick down to get the extra notes.
truespin2003 3 years ago
Look at jojo mayer... he explains the technik on his DVD. but he uses also the thumb to make it more powerfull. so its an other version.

The single handed rolls are Mangini style, but he plays relaxed, shuffly, easy, lineer stuff... However, he is a great drummer anyway...
