  • Video quality is kind of poor so I can't be sure but I could swear I saw smoke coming off those fretboards. Especially the Mandolin.

  • Sounds great! Doesn't really matter how fast it is as long as the timings right on. If you can define every note and keep everything in time...then its all good.

  • I personally think it sounds great. My only question is: Why didn't Heather (I believe that's her name) take a break?

  • Yeah thats her name heather franks. as to why she didnt take a cut, i dont know.

Shes not the best fiddle player, but i would be suprised if she couldnt at least take an ok cut

  • contrary to popular belief, you don't have to play a song the same way every time.....what is really great is when someone takes a song and makes it their own. that's when you know you have talent! these guys play it fast and in "the wrong key"....well guess what, they MASHED it son! keep improvising, otherwise there will never be anything new and fresh.

  • Wrong key, and too fast... but if "mashin'" is what you shooting for, you got it.

Earl's version in 1949 might not have "mashed" as much, but it sounds better.

Sorry to be critical, but a little constructive criticism is better than people just telling you how great you are. You kids can pick... no doubt about that. A few more years of maturity will do you a lot of good.

  • Bluegrass music gets its vitality and energy from change. Aren't we all glad and better off that Clarence didn't try to be Lester, Tony didn't try to emulate Clarence....and aren't there just way too many Rice clones anyway? Don't you feel that no one can play exactly like Tony, so why try? Cory's first break was very close to Earl's version.

  • There are way too many tony clones out there. Ever body needs to develope their own style. Its fine to take licks from other people, but just put your own twist on things.

  • @flatpikinguitar So are there to many Earl and JD clones? or Monroe and Doyle clones?

  • After that he improvised, which is what Earl did when he changed the 3/4 timing to 4/4, increased the speed and changed the key, creating Pike County Breakdown from the song, Sweet Betsy From Pike. I'm sure there were some early 20th century music lovers who thought that what he was doing didn't fit what SBFP should sound like. Thank goodness Earl didn't care.

  • I agree, Earl was the best at being Earl and no one will be Earl ever again. No one else should try. Honor those who pioneered our music, but like Earl, improvise, do your own thing and our music will live on. Bluegrass Parlor Band, you guys are great. Mash on!!!!

  • I stand by my original assessment. Bluegrass, just like any other music, will evolve and grow. But that doesn't mean that traditional bluegrass is lacking vitality and energy. Bluegrass is different from other, more popular music forms in that tradition means a lot; it remains relevant. The "mashin" generation seems to be all about playing everything way too fast and cramming in as many hot licks as possible. That's how I was when I was a teenager, too.

Like I said, these kids are good.
