I think the phone own the accelerometer functionality but it's not activated yet by the official firmware, that's why you need to hack the phone or just develop an application which bypass the firmware to use the accelerometer.

@seiferflo Your understanding of usage of the accelerometer has to be refreshed. It is being used though little. One function of it is used to snooze alarms / reject calls.
