@harshie111 Titilayo, i'm so impressed with you! I would just like to know how you got into speaking Yoruba and embracing the culture in the first place... please respond to me! P.S. my mum thinks you're fantastic!! :)
I am your fan now cara( titlayo ). in a strange way this is inspiring to me and am not even yoruba(but from Nigeria). my email is raymondativie@gmail.com. Keep it up continue to chase your hopes> God bless you
In fact its a great same for we yoruba, that we can not speak real yoruba language, ijinle yoruba is very sweet when you see good prof or any elder yoruba tribe speaking yoruba,like Ojogbon Akinwumi Ishola, Baba Adebayo Faleti ati so many like them, IN FACT MO LIKE GIRL YEN GAN;;;;;;;
I will like to ask. What motivated you to learn Yoruba language? Any association with Yoruba tribesman before your decision? kudos to you, you have really tried. O ti han gbangba pe omo oko ni iwo je.
Titi..I am officially one of your greatest audience!! All power to you for learning a language that I struggled to pass in class as a yoruba man.lol. I think u might b more fluent than me now...and thats a shame.hehe
Wow! You speak the proper yoruba language which most people can not do anymore, we kind of combine english in every saying now. It is unfortunate that your American accent is so strong it does not allow your hard work to be heard but some of us hear it. Very good work!!
I am illuminating with pride as I watch this video, I am a nigerian (male) currently studying in Connecticut n I have my family back in nigeria (lagos) my youngest sister goes to university of ibadan. This is so different and can at its minimum be defined as beautiful. I have never seen an american speak the yoruba language, u dont have the accent but that is in no way your fault. I will be following your blog and u officially have a fan in Connecticut !!!
Yoruba is a very difficult language to learn for non-natives. The intonation cannot be ignored. A single word can have many meanings, depending on how it's pronounced.
Take the word - owo. It could mean any of the following:
hand
respect
broom
money
trade (career)
crooked
Furthermore, Yoruba has a unique pronunciation for the letter 'p'. Don't pronounce it the English way. Learn to pronounce that letter properly, and you'd go further in speaking Yoruba. Just listen to native speakers.
Not sure I can speak as much Yoruba as you and I am Yoruba....lol. I learnt the word "ferese" in your other video......I didnt know what it meant prior to watching it. I can't wait to forward the video to my friends and family. I have watched almost all your videos .......impressive!!! Keep it up girl! You rock!!! By the way - Don't be discouraged by negative comments..... I personally feel you are on the right path to learning and speaking the language perfectly. Way to go girl!!!
Titi, am amazed and short of words; o je iya lenu funmi wipe o nso yoruba ju awon omo yoruba gan lo. Can I get to know you or have your email contacts, o'se.
Am not impressed cos we travel to the so called oyinbo country and they mock us alot because of our accent so why should I or anybody give credits to her? The long term effect of this is infiltration of our culture with western sentiments. Am not racist but anyone who've lived abroad for sometime will understand where am coming from...pele o titit?!
@sholly79 you are talking crap darling. absolute drivel. who told you to travel to the oyibo country? the effect on you is that your english is razz and your yoruba is diluted. but don't take this personally. you are completely entitled to your own opinion
Hi Cara/Titilayo! I am highly impressed at how fluent you're able to speak the language, u're really speaking some ijinle yoruba. I'm curious though...why yoruba? Well done dear....Adura mi fun e ni wipe, oloun a je ki o se ase yori and may it be all that you hoped for and much more. Blessings to you and have loads of fun in naija!

this is awesome!!! but titilayo, why do you choose to learn the yoruba language and its culture? are you half nigerian, and what is the yoruba lectures like in ur UNI in US compare to UI?
OMG...Did she just say 'ibasepo' and 'padanu' and 'iriri' and 'ireti' and 'erogba'? I am so freaking impressed...not many young Yoruba people know as many words as this. The Yoruba program at UW must be really good. Good luck, chick!
This is so encouraging for me... im nigerian but has lived in the United Kingdom all my life and only recently decided to start learning my Mother language (Yoruba) Its so hard, nd ive only just mastered the accent but the language itself is truly a challenge but im getting there "By Gods Grace " lol thanks a lot for this video
i am impresses Titi all the way from cold cold madison to the warmth of Eko megacity . great effort reflecting in your warmth and and brilliance of purpose. Well done . Am glad you tasted the sweetness of the yoruba culture first hand
why do people mcomplain of her accent? Do you know that when many nigerians speak english most english people can't understand them eventho they speak good english? Because we have accents and so do everybody that try to speak in another tongue different from their native tongue. Titilayo speak correct yoruba grammar that are lacking in many yoruba comments I read here. Many of the so called yorubas here speak coloquial yoruba with some slangs. Well done Titi Cara!
@omoibile its because yoruba is a tonal language, and if u have the wrong tone on a word you can be saying something completely different. English is different, if you have the wrong tone on a word in english, is will just sound weird but it will still be the same word. I still admire her, and i understood what she said. I just wanted to explain why we are so particular about the accent.
E se pupo! This is a perfect yoruba grammar that most yoruba speaking people can't speak again. I know good yoruba grammar are spoken in Ibadan and in Republic of Benin (another country in West Africa)
Titi...........inu mi dun lati ri blog yi. Oluwa a ran e lowo. You are a pride to our nation, the Yoruba origins and myself in particular. O ku ise gidigidi, o ko ni sise ni agbara Olorun. I am speechless................

Btw your ability to speak Yoruba and even use words some of us don't use in our regular conversations is highly commendable.
Titilayo i must say that i'm really impressed.... do keep it up.... believe you mean i neednt the interpretation to understand you, i did perfect well... i am more than happy to hear that you actually stayed in Ibadan, bcos that is where i come from myself.. Hey Titi, this post was back in June...let's have another one to see how your accent has improved. You've got the words and the semantics sorted but the accent is atrocious! This understandable seeing as you learntt o speak Yoruba in America and in an academic environment; now learning it in Ibadan...that's a different matter.
So more video blog posts please...you've got a large contingent of Yoruba people rooting for you to succeed.
When a white man runs for president of America, no one, to use your flowery language, "gives a f*@?". Why did you all care when a black man ran for president?
awwwwwww, ori mi wu nigba ti mo wo "blogi" re, Titi!! omo yoruba l'emi naa..nko tile mo ohun ti mo fe so mo..o ya mi l'enu gidi gaan ni!! ki alaafia Olorun maa wa pelu e, Cara!!!!!!
Simply amazing, here's someone that isn't from Nigeria but is doing an excellent job at learning Yoruba. Hopefully younger generations of Nigerians would learn from you and learn their language because it's beautiful and so are you. Ku ise.
If I had to score the communication skills to pronounce each word, I will give her 9 out of 10 percentile, cuz she tried n all the best in your Nigerian experience. I know you will love your experience
Wow, this is fantastic! Like anyone learning a second language you have acquired quite a bit of the vocabulary (your choice of words are by no means pedestrian!). Believe me, a lot of the younger yorubas don't speak this well! I grew up in Ibadan and i know you wouldn't have a hard time getting around or settling in there. Lagos is another matter (like NYC, can be chaotic).
I hope u achieve your goals for the visit to 9ja - as we Nigerians refer to our fatherland- and have an awesome as well.
Very good attempt. I spent the first 27 years of my life in Ibadan and my middlename is Titilayo.
Staying in Ibadan will help you with your intonation - your grammar and vocabulary is near perfect. But do be careful of the Ibadan accent ;) It may confuse things.
Very proud of you for studying Yoruba as a course. What inspired you to study Yoruba, one of many Nigerian languages. And mo ti gbagbe........O re wa gan(Beautiful).
I am so proud of you,for you to take your time to learn my language, it is definitely impressive, i am from Ibadan too and i finished my tertiary education in University of Ibadan,Ibadan is a lovely place to be, i´ve watched all of your vlog but i want to know the reason u studied Yoruba, what attracted you to the language ?, O kare, Eledumare a wa pelu re ni gbogbo igba, amin. O dabo, mo nreti esi re oooo
#OMG, you really have a beautiful face! Your English name Cara in Spanish means 'Face' and also in Portuguese. I wish you all the best... to be honest you speak Yoruba very well and the Yoruba People will love you even more for that. Have a lovely stay in Ibadan and don't forget to have fun!
Not sure I can speak as much Yoruba as you and I am Yoruba....lol. I learnt the word "ferese" in your other video......I didnt know what it meant prior to watching it. Emm So What If She Speaks Yoruba? When A Yoruba Person Speaks English Noone Gives A Fuck. Why Do Yall Care if An American Speaks Yoruba?
MrsPlastersin 1 year ago
@MrsPlastersin
When a white man runs for president of America, no one, to use your flowery language, "gives a f*@?". Why did you all care when a black man ran for president?
...and so the point you were making was?

Well done and I will watch out for you :)

Good effort. She speaks better than many native born. Of course, the accent is off but she could fix and get better with that in due course. O gbiyanju o.
