Battlefield 2, Counter Strike 1.6, and Rogue Spear were/are great games especially Counter Strike 1.6 but QUAKE ONE still RULEZ! ROCK ON! :-)

Best thing about Quake was the soundtrack. Trent Reznor more than delivered on the soundtrack. Just a shame that the programmers and designers (yes Romero & Carmack, I'm looking at you) didn't. One of the best soundtracks ever. One of the most disappointing games ever. Doom with a soundtrack by Trent, that would really have been something truly special :) Quake 2 was far better than Quake, and a few tunes by Rob Zombie as well :)

@boojum420 I don't agree about the quality of the game, I thought each level of Quake was brilliant coupled with the music. The last world is by far my favourite. I remember being disappointed at the time by the lack of depth to the combat though; we were promised clever enemies that hid behind corners and a dragon and all sorts, but none of that happened and we basically got Doom in 3D set in medieval times...I still loved it, though.

for those wondering how to listen to the music in-game, you have to have the quake cd in the drive or mounted, i believe.

what sucks, is if you buy it on steam you don't get the cd :P

i think it's legal to download the ISO if you own the game on steam though, or atleast i would assume so.

You know what's awesome about Trent Reznor's earlier music? When he screams, he doesn't scream just for the sake of it. It actually feels like he's fully emotionally-immersed into whatever song is playing.

Quake/Quake II game discs are mixed mode CDs. In Windows if you have a mixed mode CD, it will only show the data track in the file explorer. If you want the music, you have to rip the audio with an audio ripping program.

None of the Quake games go with #1. Quake 2 follows up into Quake 4 (and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars fits in there somewhere), and Quake 3 is a standalone universe since it's just multiplayer anyway.

Anyway, this soundtrack has never been matched in terms of atmosphere and horror.
