why does the presenter have to use fingernails to navigate through the touch screen?--that usually means it has the shitting touching screen called resistive touch, the performance of which is far inferior to iphone//touch or samsung galaxy S phones with Capacitive touchscreens.

Ehm... Archos is better because you can view many formats files. The Ipod Touch is limited with 2 types of audio and 2 types of video. I wonder what kind of HD it uses if it can crash... Never heard about this fact of "crashing" with an Ipod Touch.

The Archos looks a bit plastical and thus not very strong but that is optical I guess... My opinion: The Archos looks like a serious toy and the Ipod Touch looks like a childish toy, but both very functional and longlasting. Cheap versus Expensive.

No there isn't but after a full reinitilisation it all seems to be a lot more stable and so far very happy. It's just too good a device to send back!

Just to keep you posted it still has the same fault, i.e. will not always boot up and has decided to turn itself off at random. I am now reformatting (again!!) and will try for the third time after which this rather excellent but troublesome piece of kit is on its way back to you know who....

Update on the post below. Been using the Archos 5 Android 500gb for 3 days now. First - it crashes often go the extent that I have to do a reset as it fails to boot up after full power off. There maybe a problem with the hard drive because it doesn't initialise on power up. The rest is excellent. If the thing packs up on holiday however (that's what happened to my last Archos 5 non-Android) I will not be a happy bunny!

@K2MDL you need to backup all your data, go to recovery mode by pushign volume and power button for 5 seconds on boot. Then try recovery then if that doesn't help do a storage formatting. That should fix things. Also make sure you install the latest firmware after formatting.

Just bought a new 500gb version and very impressed. Been buying Archos products for 7 or 8 years now and whilst they are never bug free they are great value for money and I still prefer to use their units over my 32gb iPhone. The screen is fantastic, bright very sharp and responsive. Certainly recommended and a relative bargain too! Next version? 128/256gb flash and a CAMERA!! Plus convince Skype to offer on Android and stop wasting their time with crappy Windows Mobile 6.5 variants.

Depends if you want the larger screen. The Archos 7 IMT is only 209 dollars with 160GB on Amazon, a good price. While this Archos 5 IT with Android is available for $249 at Radio Shack.

it's the same archos 5 except some silly stupid new things like shape, storge, and theme and mediaplayer and u can jsu download the media player for the old once.

It's not the same as the old one. Now it's got Android OS which means you can install many applications. Now WiFi is faster, browser is much faster, video playback is better with Youtube HD and MKV 720p support, Bluetooth, GPS was added and FM radio receiver/transmitter, and it's even thinner, lighter and cheaper.

in all ways??? The iPod Touch is smaller, lighter, has a more responsive touch screen, is MILES ahead in apps and games, and doesn't try to squeeze more money out of you for codec plugins. It also has a much more stable OS. although the Archos has improved with recent firmware updates.

I own and like both, but both have clear strengths and weaknesses - the Archos has a great screen, an open OS, 802.11n, stereo Bluetooth, etc. but better in all ways is just nonsense.

you do have some good points, but the Archos 5 supports way more codecs than the ipod touch without even buying any codecs. Also, i think that you have to pay for some of the codecs because the owners of them charge money for them to be used (not 100% though).

Honestly, I'm getting the Archos for all that stuff, and the biggest being that it IS bigger. I don't like smaller and lighter, due to my large hands and the fact that I like large and bulky electronics. But this thing is just... crazy. It's amazing, to me, and I was never a fan of Apple, in the first place. Just my opinion.

If Archos had all the stuff the iPod Touch had, I'd still get the Archos because it's bigger. But android has always been a by far superior OS. =/

the one in the video. yes. the HDD models are actually quite larger since they have to support a big harddrive...but it comes down to space vs size. keep in mind that you can allways also put more memory in a SSD since it has an SD slot.. but s hardrive is going to have more space...atleast for now. Both of these units are avalivable on amazon though i am awaiting the relase of the 16gb and the 8gb.

No, unfortunately this is a totally new product. To obtain Android you would have to format the drive and that is beyond the capability of a firmware update. Therefore sell your old one on eBay and put it towards a new one.

They were the first to have a portable hard drive mp3 player, also the first to have touch screen and wifi on this type of device. Also its not a phone, so it is not the margarine of iphone. I have to be honest as an archos consumer I feel cheated this time around, it seems like it was just yesturday that the archos 5 just came around and now after purchasing it, instead of offering an upgrade for the current one they just come out with a new one with the same name but with more features.
