Also you have to include that for ALL civilisations there are times of rise and times of fall. Greeks just like Iranians and Indians and Chinese are people that rose and fell numerous times so really you need not now start making comparisons about "the ancient" and the "modern". What ancient (500B.C. ? or 1000 B.C.? or 1,500 B.C. or 9,000 B.C. or 12,000 B.C.?) and what modern (1912? 1922? 1940? 1970? 2011?)

First as you correctly imply, the myth is NOT about Atlantis itself BUT about ATHENS a city situated in Greece. Atlantis is mentioned ONLY as a side story and only because it waged war against south Europe and North Africa invading from the Gibraltar and finally losing to a Greek alliance led by Athens at North Italy - then Greeks taking the war to the Atlantis island (was a group of islands alltogether) in the west and beating them for good. Then soon after this the cataclysm occured.

@notgodsemigod One has really to read the myth to understand how real it sounds (with real references to Atlantic ocean, the Carribean islands, the American continent, and other such stuff that make it a real story and not at all any fairytale as idiotic, naif, devious and semi-literate authors had treated it in the past!).
But from there one, even if Aegean people predate others I would not say who is the eldest and such, the prood is not easy to bring and afterall there is no race for it

I do believe that precataclysmic Aegean people had not just colonised all the Mediterranean (where the Mediterranean race comes afterall), but that they had done the rounds of the world since early times and had a full knowledge about it, knowledge that was lost after the cataclysm that totally destroyed their centers and which was only preserved by the myth. We talk about advanced cultures, no UFOs, no aliens, no supermen.
Now on the Atlantis myth there are interesting details that escape

Look I am all aware of modern propaganda and I am very well aware that the Greek (or Hellenic or Ionian... call it as you like it is the same thing afterall) civilisation is not perceived to be as old as the Sumerian and the Egyptian since in the Aegean region civilisation flourished well before 3500 B.C. (i.e. more than 1000 years prior to pyramids of Egypt and Zigurats of Mesopotamia). However so did cultures in India & Mesopotamia, many older cultures existed.

So why do we need to go into the silly game of "my guys are older than yours", well it does not go that way: in reality on earth there were several spots of early civilisations (in random order):
1) Aegean sea (Greece)
2) Indus & Ganges rivers (India)
3) Tigris & Efratis rivers (Mesopotamia)
4) Nile river (Egypt)
5) Yungze river (China)
6) Lake Texcoco (Mexico)
Where we should concentrate are on the details: what do you see out of all these? See any strange thing?

The strange thing is that ALL civilisations centered around the earth, the rivers and the lakes. ALL BUT ONE, the Greek one which is the ONLY culture developed in a relatively less fertile dry land, without large rivers, without large expanses of land to cultivate, with lots of mountains and many islands which created since early on a civilisation of its own. And that is because Aegean tribes (I call them such for
