Al tabari is just a history source. it is neither Quran nor a Sahih Hadith. other than Al Tabari, there are many other histroy books that show same events and saying with a huge difference. History books cannot be trusted mate. Al Tabari is not an authentic hadith book or something like that

In the western battlefields of the 12th century if you were some sort of levy and told to charge you'd die; If you were a professional soldier but on the front line you'd die; If you were a knight you had chances of surviving. Wars/battles were never heroic.

People of the west in the 12th century AD weren't so creative, but the Byzantines, the muslims and many ancient people of Europe had used strategy in their wars such as cutting supply lines (or poisoning food/water, biological war anyone?), leading others to endless chases effectively starving them, bribing, betraying, etc.
