I'm not sure about Blanket's hair being bleached/dyed, but I do know I had light yellow blonde hair until I was 10 yrs old then it started to get darker and darker until nearly black, my sister too. I was told by a hair styllist this is common in Scottland, that is where my ancestors are from, so maybe it's the reason, not sure.
