Forget about the stupid Ed Wood movie and comment on the actual subject - Al Bowlly...that's why you're here - right ?? This is the best rendition of "Gulity" from 1931....gotta love it !
Ed Woods masterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space, loved Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi in the Woods Biopic, a deserved Oscar, something I think Woods should be given posthumously for providing such an entertaining film, for all the wrong reasons.
"Guilty" is one of the best romantic ballads written by Richard Whiting. His daughter, Margaret, would record the song in 1947, making it one of her classic hits. Ray Noble enventually came to the U.S., forming yet another orchestra with American musicians, featuring vocalist Buddy Clark. They were popular entertainers during radio's heyday.
Ray Noble first came to US in '34 to play the Rainbow Room (which included an NBC radio hookup). He came to NY with Al Bowlly and Bill Hardy, his drummer and manager. Glenn Miller helped Noble organize his NY orchestra and played tombone with him for a few years until he formed his own band. Later on, Noble formed a different band on the West Coast which included Buddy Clark.
Do you know what you have here, film-wise? That's poor old Bela Lugosi, at his 'home' in L.A., just prior to his filming with Ed Wood. Probably the last film of Lugosi (other than the few minutes on Wood's film...before he died!
The video accopaniment to this beautiful song shows off the the wonderful British dry humour. Consider the opening credits of Dr.Stangelove..."Try a little Tenderness" being played to the visual of Jet Bombers being fueled in mid-Air (how phallic) or the ending credits of Strangelove with Vera Lynn singing "We'll Meet Again" to a Nuclear Holocaust. Always enjoyed Ed Wood :-)
AL BOWLLEY + RAY NOBLE = MAGIC

Sounds great on my gramophone....thanks for uploading it. Al Bowlly is unique. A great loss and a tragic end to the great maestro.

Bela still can be found sitting at a bus stop in Hollywood. He never left.
