They could have said no we want to sing ourselves but they were young and just wanted to be famous and didn't think about the recourse. They were still great entertainers. Most groups lip sing anyway when they perform live so how is this that much different?

@Portis1Luv I disagree with the boy band comment n'sync and the backstreet boys both had good voices and they always sang live and sometimes played instruments. I don't think Milli Vanilli deserved all the criticism they recieved, it was all the crooked music company's fault. It's amazing that most "artists" now no longer sing live (i.e britney spears and ashlee simpson) and are called out for it, but no one really cares anymore.

The following is the way I understand MV music. MV music is a product: a combination of the two main parts: Audio and Video part. 'Audio Music part' is done some musicians, who had fabulous voices and musical talents 'Video Music part' is done by the newly 'hired' Rob and Fab, Who had stunning looking entertaining stage skills and manners for their fan. Resulting combination was a success then. The music is now a legend anyway.
