The reason Mario ever wore a tanooki suit in the first place was because tanookis were considered sacred in ancient japanese culture!!! In SMB3 if you pressed down in a tanooki suit while jumping he would turn into a buddhist statue! they made it a little less religious in SM3DL by getting rid of the statue's staff when you ground pound in a stone tanooki suit (Mario and Luigi would have a colored scarf to indicate it), but it still represented the fact that tanookis are sacred!
