  • He looks like Nicolas Cage with a bunch of make up.

  • He was a genius, inspired by Lenny Bruce, imitated by Sasha Cohen. Andy Kaufman a true original.

  • Okay, so Tony poured eggs all over Dinah in the footage we didn't get to see. I'm sure it was simply an accident and had nothing to do with the fact that Andy and a lot of others didn't like the talk shows of the seventies which were maudlin little gabfests meant to promote the already rich and famous and keep them rich and famous.

  • ? year

  • What a riot. But I can't tell if Dinah is in on the joke. And screw those producers who put up those subtitles, taking the joke away.

  • Bwaha!!

  • You are all ridiculous. This IS Andy Kaufman. The real Tony Clifton couldn't troll this well even if he was hammered. Long live the king. R.I.P.

  • You know, Tony Clifton is a much better singer than Jim Carrey's performance made him out to be.

  • why do people get so pretentious about andy kaufman ?

  • @lookatmepleasesir WHATS PRETENTIOUS MEAN?

  • Andy!!!!! Come back!

  • @2:35 OK hey sada sada sada sopedosapada HEEEEEEEEEEY losvadaspe

  • I find Tony Clifton to be Andy Kaufman. Benny Hill learned from this style. Silly mortals.. ;-)

  • Imagine someone doing this with Oprah

  • 3:44 whadda bout whadda bout I wuz gionna sing another song!? I burst out laughing

  • My father is Tony Clifton. I was working for him during this appearance. The unprofessionalism of the Shore people caused him to lose it on this day.

Dad is one of the all-time great performers. Unfortunately the sound system was off and you can't get a sense of how great a singer he is from this clip.

  • @sonsofthesportsguy I thought your father was "The Sports Guy"?

  • Aw come on! I wanna see the part when he gets thrown out of the studio!!!!!!! Andy was half in the bottle for that show even though he never drank, which shows how dedicated he was to the Clifton persona. He gets kicked out after completely destroying the "cooking segment" that would have happened right after this video ended..........

  • @mikerhoa Apparently the tapes of the part of the show that follow where destroyed by the network in order for the event to never be seen and/or to not embarrass Dinah Shore because Kaufman or Zmuda, whoever was playing Clifton here, I don't know for sure, dumped a pan full of eggs over Dinah Shore's head while the show was live on air and the network quickly went to commercials. The event that followed, Clifton being escorted out by security guards, happened while the cameras where not rolling.

  • @mikerhoa Well, it's obviously Andy Kaufman playing Clifton here.

  • @cactaceous Don`t know, maybe he`d find a guy that really looks like him, just to troll,

  • Crosby. Martin. Sinatra.....CLIFTON.

  • Strange, this isn't anything like Tony Clifton as he appears in "Man on the Moon," where did they get that from?

  • Tony Clifton was Andy Kaufman's Buddy Love

  • this is so obviously Andy playing the part here.

  • this is Robert Deniro in King of Comedy.

  • Looks like Andy, Sounds like Andy, maybe Andy?

  • After Kaufman's death, Clifton carried on the life, comedy, and essence of Kaufman. Kaufman was so crazy to plan all this out.

  • I like Bob Zmuda as Tony Clifton more

  • What is the deal on "his big hit" as stated by Dinah. Then she calls that a gag.

  • Seriously, I would do ANYTHING to see that clip of Tony dumping eggs on Dinah's head. I could just imagine her screaming and running in terror with a bunch of big burly guys in three piece black suits just knocking the piss out of him.

  • if this isnt the funniest goddamn thing ever, then the world has no sense of humor.....god bless andy kaufman RIP

  • Andy : more Thought provocature and discuss amongst yourselves bits, not really get to know me material...genuine prankster and complete act. This type of stuff does not appeal to advertisers though...too rebelious...

  • This may sound bad, but I found Jim Carrie's rendition of him - much funnier. Sorry Mister Clifton/Kaufman.

  • @blumenthol I think Carries rendition is just set within context, It's funnier if you have the set up of the rest of the film if you see what I mean.

  • WTF and you can't get enough of it

  • thats so obviously andy kaufman he shoulda worn some shades or something

  • thats so obviously andy kaufman

  • I'd have thought someone as zany and kooky as Charles Nelson Reilly would be in on this.

  • to bad we dnt get to see the eggs dropped on dinah's head...i read abt it. all footage has been destroyed...what a shame. i am too young to know any of these people, but have watched a lot of andy and he is genius.

  • Andy sang just well enough so people were never sure to take it seriously, or as a joke. You might say he liked to cause confusion in the audience.....this was his genius.

  • andy was a genius

  • haha Dinah Shore is such a fucking hypocrit robot.

  • No sunglasses????? You can easily tell that this is Andy performing, look at his eyes.

  • Andy started it all - - This was the beginning of the "you've been punked" movement ... we lost him too soon.

  • "Is this a put-on?"

  • @MamboInferno Yes its a put on. Clifton was a character invented by Andy Kaufman. This is Andy playing the role. Bob Zmuda also played Clifton. Tony Clifton was not real, just a funny character. It gave Kaufman the opportunity to act like an asshole which is what he really liked to do.

  • @chad11950 don't forget andy's brother used to play clifton as well. he was a true genius and the ultimate prankster.

  • @naprelle I have heard that but never heard anything else about the brother. What ever happened to the brother?

  • It's sad the footage of him dumping the eggs on her head was destroyed. I would pay to good money to see that!

  • This is definitely Kaufman and not the other guys.

  • Dinah Shore ... fuck you

  • tony clifton is andy kaufman, fools

  • @DoctorDreee Then how did he preform at a benefit for Survivors of Hurricane Katrina?

  • I think andy's brother played him, i'm not sure.@rebelsushi

  • @rebelsushi; several other people played the character of Tony Clifton. That's all he is, a character. He does not exist as a real person.

  • This is definitely Kaufman's Tony Clifton and not Bob Zmuda's. I would LOVE to see "Tony" dumping the eggs on Dinah - Dinah was very sweet, but travesties were TC's raison d'être. RIP to both of them.

  • @cryptsub Tony is not dead.

  • Dinah has such a big mouth. Not figuratively, pause it at :23

  • he does look like andy

  • well shit- that was my understanding... go ahead and kiss my ass

  • 4:02-4:04

"Hey where should I put this?

isialright if I put it on the floor?"

"Oh! well-well of course, go right ahead"

    "Allright" :D

  • the best!!!!

  • Cliftonand Kaufman were the same guy...

  • @ben13rown No, they weren't. It is an urban legend they were one in the same. I saw them perform together at Carnegie Hall.

  • @ben13rown u lie

  • @ben13rown Clifton transcended Kaufman, he was too much man for any one man to depict, whether it was Kaufman, Zmuda, Giamatti or Carrey.

  • Damn I really wish the footage wasnt lost, one of the best pranks ruined by someone who cant take a joke

  • more records than the Beatles and Elvis....combined. Tony is GODDDD! gotta love how Dinah has to stop and think of how to describe him lol

  • @ramona: Freddie Prinze sounds like a giant feminine hygienic disposal container. Even Clifton would have more tact.

  • The REAL truth is that Andy Kaufman was a character created by Tony Clifton! And pre-emptively too, which tells you how brilliant Clifton's ruse really was. That is, Clifton appeared to create Kaufman long before anyone ever was aware OF Clifton himself, yet Clifton outlived Kaufman, which proves Clifton is real and Kaufman merely an illusion. Brilliant! I get chills just thinking about it. I'd pay big money to see Tony Clifton do a performance, even if he did it in Guelph!

  • @Morgteck I believe you are the only other person that understood this. Clifton indeed, was the original! He created the Andy Kaufman character as an anti-villian to his own performance. Thats why Andy Kaufman dissappeared a long time ago, but Clifton is alive and well somewhere. Genius! Absolute genius!

  • @Morgteck what are you fucking retarded?!?!?! Tony Clifton is a fictional character created by Andy Kaufman and sometimes played by Zula

  • @magio0o93 - LOL!!! Thanks, buddy, for giving me my best laugh in about a week. Do you usually have trouble with concepts such as humorous satire? What you must realize is that Tony Clifton is a genius. He not only created Kaufman and Zula pre-emptively....he also created you, and you just don't realize it! If Tony Clifton were to decide to dispose of you, he could do it with a snap of his fingers, so give thanks to Tony every day that you are still here, pal. ;-D

  • @Morgteck LOL

  • @magio0o93 Clifton and Kaufman on stage at the same time at Carnegie Hall. They are two different personas. Two different people. Kaufman stole Cliftons stage presence, and his stylings.

  • @Morgteck what a load of crap

  • @marycockburn1 - You've made the mistake of taking me dead seriously, haven't you? ;-) Mary, you need to look more on the humorous side of life. Enjoy rather than fight. If you like, I will also explain to you how Tony Clifton set a standard for artfullness in stage performance that has never been exceeded by anyone since. That's why he's the King. Not Elvis...oh, no...Tony Clifton!!! I would also like to know if you have spent any time studying the life of the Australian Wombat?

  • @Morgteck great im happy for you do you really think im called mary lol

  • @marycockburn1 - Well, I have no way of knowing for sure about that, do I? This is the Internet. You could be named "Roscoe" or "Lefty" for all I know. The only person I've heard of named anything-cockburn before is Bruce Cockburn. He's a folksinger.

  • @Morgteck you are in fact the most brilliant youtube user I have seen

  • @username11134 - Well, thanks! ;-) Very good of you to say so. I find Tony Clifton hilarious.

  • I am gonna be Mr. Clifton this Halloween!

  • I love the way they put "THIS IS A PUT ON" on the screen...but why the QUOTES on everything they're putting up on screen...LOL!

  • Wait... So Andy Kaufman was not real - just a character made up by Tony Clifton????

  • @mikebius HAHAHA

  • @mikebius Yes, Tony Clifton was a character created by Andy. However, Tony Clifton was sometimes performed by Bob Zmuda, Andy's friend and collaborator. I don't know if Andy and Tony ever appeared together. As Tony, Andy did not acknowledge the charade. There's the story that Freddie Prinze saw Andy in his disguise, and greeted him. "Tony" gave him the brushoff. Prinze bent his arm behind his back until he got his greeting...from Andy.

  • This clip proves how poison (kaufman and his ilk) mixes with anything gracious.

  • love that lacklucter clapping ! RIP ANdy Kaufman....

  • The look of fear in Dinah's eyes during this is priceless.

  • He nneds to wear the sunglasses.

    I can't tell that's Andy.

  • Charles Nelson Riley is confused.

  • This guy sucks.

  • @deepinmyass "this guy' was a millionaire Hollywood star,ask Bandit7498

  • @rick7531

Oh Yeah? Well YOUUUU have a gambling problem.

  • @deepinmyass How did you know I had a gambling problem? I always gamble afters seeing Clifton perform in Las Vegas. He just perfomed at Harrahs last week.A huge turnout to see a great performance.

  • @deepinmyass Wow! You really have no clue. Do you live under a rock?

  • in this show its andy kaufman, its clearly in his eyes

  • @waseemo86 Tony and Andy are 2 different people.

  • @rick7531 Kaufman created and originally played the "Tony Clifton" character, the character was passed off to Bob Zmuda . Most of the TV appearances of Tony Clifton are actually Zmuda, not Kaufman and Charlie Kaufman played the character sometimes.

  • @waseemo86 No I have never caught on, Andy and Tony are different entertainers. Kaufman used Cliftons name to become famous.

  • @waseemo86 I've seen Clifton in Las Vegas many times, post Kauffmans untimely passing.

  • @rick7531 you mean 30 plus years later you still haven't caught on?

  • @bandit7498 No, and I refuse to believe they are the same person, it is an illussion

  • @rick7531 whatever you say pal

  • @bandit7498 Clifton and Kaufman performed together at Carnegie Hall, how could they be the same person?

  • @rick7531 lolololol. because his friend Bob Zamuda would do Clifton sometimes also. That was always part of the gimmick to keep people guessing. But whenever "Clifton" came out with glasses on it was someone other than Andy because they were hiding their eyes. Here you can clearly see it's Andy's eyes. Even after Andy died they kept doing Clifton for a while. Be for real. Are you guys just pulling my leg? There's no way you believe what you're saying.

  • @bandit7498 Just having some fun on you tube w/o the flaming, or profanity that is so prevalent on this site. I've been a fan of Kaufman for years

  • @rick7531 I thought that's what was happening. Yeah, you had me going. Then after a couple posts I was like, "there's no way, he has to be pulling my leg."

  • @rick7531 Yeah its in the book written by Zmuda. I'm at the chapter now where they decide its time Zmuda went out in public as Clifton along with Kaufman to really throw people off. Zmuda was writing the material anyway. What I wanna know is if this MR. X character who really influenced Andy Kufman really existed.

  • @bandit7498 rick is right Andy Kaufman used Tony's name to get places in show business, Tony didn't appreciate it and I can't blame him

  • @EcCannon89 you people have got to be kidding. Kaufman created Clifton smart guy

  • Pretty clearly this is Andy Kaufmann. You can see it in his eyes, which is why when others (Zmuda, etc.) did this shtick they wore sunglasses.

  • Too bad they deleted the darn incident! Love you forever Tony :3

Andy should've been there to seen it!..Was he?

  • He has andys eyes :D

  • I bet Charles Nelson Riley wishes he was back in Lidsville! On the other hand, Tony Clifton sounds better than paul willians. P>S> Tony Clifton was CROCKED out of his head. He got drunk on the way to the studio

  • the audience is rolling with it, clapping, Andy was a friggen genius

  • tony is andy, andy is tony. he just makes ppls confused that was the mening of the sketch

  • @MrNatpotten

    is Dinah in on this?

  • @btwall60 NO. She was freaked. Andy HATED shows like this, and when ANDY HATED something, TONY came out to play!

  • Didn't Zappa appear on Dinah Shore too?

  • why did he take the glasses off? thats the give away. Of course Andy did do impersonations of him. He must have meant them to know it wasnt Tony.

  • I have seen Tony Clintons act in Las Vegas, at the Tropicana. He is a fabulous entertainer

  • The movie about Andy Kaufman implied that he wore a wig and a prostetic mask to disguise himself as Tony Clifton, but I think that's never been proven?

  • @rainer1980 Maybe not but its obvious he did

  • If You Cant See That Thats Andy Kofmans Face In Tony You Are Retarded.

  • Clifton was so drunk when he did this.

  • It's too bad he hated Andy Kaufman so much. I bet they would have been great together.

  • you're joking, right?

  • joking about what?

  • Andy was tony. they were the same person.

  • its funny how lonelygnome is so stupid that he cant even tell its Andy when hes not even wearing the glasses.

  • @stoolet It's funny how you're so stupid that you can't even realize that I'm playing along with Andy's act.

  • Is it true that Tony Clifton refused to go to Andy's funeral?

  • @banksnot Yeah, that is true. But he did attend after all :)

  • @banksnot Tony Clifton is a ficticious character Andy made up. Please do a little research. It is all out there for you to find.

  • @banksnot its true u got no respect for a genious.that voice made more money than ur mom bitch

  • @banksnot; Tony Clifton wasn't real.

  • @banksnot; Andy was Clifton.

  • @P5eudonym That's the joke.

  • @Tinkererer; Yes, I realize this. I'm pointing this out to the myriad of people who obviously still believe in this ruse. Which really, is a testament to how amazing Kaufman was. But my point was just to try and tell some people that Clifton was only a character made up by Kaufman.

  • @ lonelydouche Woooow thats pretty deep lol fag.

  • @stoolet lol well I'm not the idiot that took it seriously.

  • Seriously, Andy totally imitated and made fun of him, so no, no, they wouldn' have been great together!

  • @lonelygnome1 Thay were absolutely fabulous at Carnegie Hall, and also somewhere in LA

  • @lonelygnome1 Tony Clifton is a ficticious character Andy made up. Please do a little research. It is all out there for you to find. Tony was also played by Andy's sidekick to make it seem as if Tony were a real person. Its obvious Andy was a genius because he still has people fooled even today.

  • @waldopeppa WHAT?? NO WAY!! wow...this is so eye opeing! I wonder if the real Tony Clifton knew Andy was impersonating him?...I bet he'd be pissed!

  • @lonelygnome1 There is no real Tony Clifton.

  • @waldopeppa WHAAA? how could you tell that!? you must be soooo smart. nobody could ever fool you. Do you think that Latka knew he was fake? Andy must have told him at some point!

  • @lonelygnome1 I don't know about Tony hating Andy that much. There is video of him and Andy performing together during his Carnegie Hall somewhere.

  • @lonelygnome1; Clifton wasn't real.

  • Comment removed

  • I wish Dina didn't destroy the footage and Andy should have kept the glasses on it's so obvious it's him, seriously

  • The reason he's not wearing the glasses is because he's drunk. There's a documentary on all of Tony's appearances and it explains that.

  • Oh wow were can i see it?

  • IDK. I saw it on Google Videos about a year ago but I haven't been able to find it since. Sorry.

I think it was called "The Real Tony Clifton" or something like that.

  • This performance is Andy Kaufman doing a TERRIBLE impersonation of Tony Clifton. KAUFMAN could not come CLOSE to the genius of the genuine Clifton!!

  • Clifyon never existed, though Andy said he DID. And that's Andy Kaufman in this video..

  • And being a fan of Andy's, I would never admit that they're the same person. Get the hint.

  • Pussy talk?

  • Obviously this is the genuine Clifton and it's sad how a big-time show like that would handle him so badly. I don't blame him for being annoyed and outraged. I feel badly for Charles who is just an innocent victim here unlike the overbearing Dinah Shore.

  • There was never a real Tony Clifton, this is Andy Kaufman. Clifton is a fictitious character, never existed.

  • @rooophy If that is so then how can Tony Clifton still be performing long after Kaufman has left us? This is Tony Clifton in this clip, it is not Andy Kaufman although there are clips of him imitating Clifton.

  • Kaufman was not the only one performing as Clifton, he had some of his friends suit up and pretend they were Clifton and Kaufman would appear next to him to confuse people further. Clifton is not a real person, look it up!!!

  • Nope, that's Andy kaufman..surely. Shot when he was alive still.

  • @rooophy

If only you knew the real Tony Clifton. It is insulting to say that about a man who also has illegitimate children in the world right now who may have children who know about their grandfather.

  • LMFAO! You're funny!

  • Any of us could be a Clifton love-child then? Eep!

  • I love this, especially when he trys to get the crowd to clap, the shot of the old ladys was classic, they must have been really uncomfortable ...haha ..Clifton is THE MAN !!!

  • LMAO....Charles looked so uncomfortable....Dinah's trying to keep her composure on camera. Classic Kaufman.

  • I don't think Charles got it! Oh Andy....... He and Ernie Kovaks were just nuts, and fun, and now we still Have Robin Williams!

  • Incompetence will always have a ready audience: it is so easy to copy.

  • I have never heard this song done that way before, and it works!

  • A prime example of Hollyweird's proclivity for overlooking self-destructive behavior on the part of their own!

What a total waste of good film!

  • Every time they close up on him I crack up.

  • The egg clip was destroyed immediately afterword because Dinah Shore always thought of herself as queen of the fucking universe.

  • But where's th fucking eggs!?
