What's the point of disengaging the thrusters? When exactly do you do it?

That technique is referred to as an "MT". There are two most common applications (from which it breaks down into many facets): (1) Use it on a very sudden incline. (2) Use it once your speed is considerably above your max-boosting speed (or max cruise speed if it's your first lap). It'll slow your rate of deceleration. It's often used just after hitting mines (search for Multiplex videos). Any more questions, just ask.

I loved those days when EVERY selectable character had real pros and cons. Now with just practice anyone can be good at this game just playing with Fat Shark (or Black Bull).

Fat Shark and the Black Bull are the two best non-custom racers. 90% of the time FS is better. He has a solid MTS with a boost that's unparalleled by any racer out there (custom or not). Tough to use though if you're not proficient at QTs.

oh, in your vid, when you do your first MTS, how can you recover so well after making that MTS so long? maybe the question isn't much clear.

It has to do with speed when you approach the turn. Ideally you wanna be at least 1700 km/h. The MTS will compromise your speed once it's completed, but ultimately you'll gain. Also since you're using Gallant, do a right MTS when you first enter the tunnel (boost laps only). The reduced speed will make you get a SB (along with the speed from the MTS obviously). Use that strategy. Any other questions, just ask.

It does the same for me...if you do it wrong. There are actually much MUCH bigger shortcuts, but the game won't let you do them. Those are the restrictiosn you're referring to. If you go too far off course you'll blow up once you land. That can happen even with the shortcuts featured in this video.

First, I must let you know that this was amazing; although I've used the mines to boost off there, I've never used them to shoot halfway across the map.

I'd secondly like to know, if possible, what parts you built your custom machine out of, and if that machine is one of the deciding factors in your races. (ie: could you do this with another generic heavy-weight "boost A" machine that the game comes with?)

I've been a heavy proponent of custom machines, but I think you use pieces I don't have.

Actually it's the non-custom world record. The name of the machine is Fat Shark. You can unlock him by beating "The Bloody Chain" on very hard in story mode. And yes you can use other machines. The best custom machine for this track is the Gallant Star-G4 (or Gallant Cannon if you don't have the Maximum Star cockpit).
