Thanks for posting the test. Ethanol absolutely sucks. No way in hell your going to get the same mileage with E10 or E85 as pure gas like that egyptian nutball posted. Pure Gas has stoich of 14.7:1, Pure Ethanol is 9:1 and E10 is 14.1:1. You are not going to get better mileage running a fuel that requires an enriched A/F ratio like ethanol tainted gas does. Luckily I can still get pure gas in my area in both 87 and 89.
@sdvten it's not always about better mileage. don't forget the extra octane and reduced emissions of ethanol. Gasoline has more power, but it runs more efficiently. And don't forget what it takes to get gasoline into a pump in the US. I have made ethanol at home... Can you say the same about gasoline?
@cameramonkey2 Actually, back then what they tried was mixing methanol with gasoline, not ethanol. I'm not sure exactly why they stopped doing it. It was during the gas crisis of 1973, IIRC. Before the ethanol gasoline contamination, they used MTBE. Both are to oxygenate the fuel for emissions. MTBE is allowed in fuel used in aircraft, but ethanol is not.

@cameramonkey2 Wrong... You're probably just so young that you don't remember what REAL gas was about. These days it's getting more difficult to find REAL gas, but there still are some places selling it.
What is up with all this ethanol talk when there is no shortage of oil. It costs a lot of energy to produce ethanol. When you count all the farm tractors planting corn, harvesting corn, hauling it to where ever to refine it. Ethanol is making all food prices go up across the board. Cows are fead corn thats why beef is going up. Of course corn farmers are for it when the the government pays a subsidy (our Tax Dollars) to them.
Ethanol raises the oxygen content. To run the correct fuel/air ratio, more fuel must be used: worse fuel mileage. Ethanol rots gaskets and melts fiberglass. All the Cali types who want to tell you what to use don't know that old motorcycles and boats have fiberglass gas tanks. It swells plastic so the gas cap on your chain saw gets swollen tight shut. Use it in your Prius and drive it off a cliff if you want, but don't mandate it for my equipment that can't use it!
I bought an echo two cycle blower for my lawn business, and upon reading the owners manual it says do not use ethanol gas. I then tried to find a gas station that did not have ethanol, and could not find one near me. Some stations label their pumps, others don't, so I need to know how to figure out a way to see if the non labeled pumps are 100% gas. Thanks.
@reallunacy I discovered that it is okay to have E10 in an Echo, but pure gas is better. It was 85% ethanol that was not allowed. I did find some Gas stations that sell 100 pure, just do a google search on pure gas or check out puregas dot org to find some in your area. I also found out that I can't use regular gas in my Echo, I must use medium to high grade. I ended having to get a new carburetor, but it was covered in warranty.
Your information is incorrect . How does Ethanol suck... you have proved nothing here other than high school chemistry lesson on how to separate liquids. Its burns more complete. (see Ethanol Vs Gasoline test on you tube), suitable to massive power gains on vehicles with non- NA motors running high boost. Also Its cooling properties allow for better heat dissipation. And if masses produced from renewable sources such as corn and sugar cane, fuel mileage loss would be irrelevant due to low cost
Regardless of whether you feel engine performance is degraded with the addition of ethanol the costs associated with it's production exceed that of fuel made with 100 crude oil. I'm wondering what's driving it's mandatory addition to our gasoline?
I don't see a significant loss of fuel economy till I get over 30% (we have a mixing pump) and I have run it in an 07 Chevy flex fuel truck, an 04 Yukon non FF, and an old one ton w/ a 454. By the way stasak47 ethanol is cheaper...if its not your store is cheating you.
Also funny how I get better mileage progressively as the ethanol content goes up from E0 to E30, where it then falls off. From above E30 until E85 it is bit worse than E0/E10. And that is on every single vehicle that I've run on ethanol blends, E85, or hydrous ethanol. If you are losing 10% mileage on E10 something is wrong with the vehicle, not the fuel.
It's funny how ethanol only negatively effects equipment of people that hate the stuff...especially concentrations as low as E10. My Stihl chainsaw has cut down quite a few trees on E85 or hydrous ethanol and castor oil mix. Way more torque and no carbon buildup. My VW and my girlfriends Chevy have both covered tens of thousands of miles on ethanol. We have never seen a drop of more than 3 mpg on either. Good luck on you crusade to support the Middle East.
@rallingsaabs Well, that *one* way to look at it... Not necessary the *right* way, but definitely *one* way... The other (right) way to look at it is that people become negative on ethanol contaminated gasoline after it affects the equipment that they try to run with it... Some engines just don't like it... I haven't had a major problem with it in my fuel injected Harley, but my sport bike with a carburetor ends up costing me a few hundred dollars every couple of years due to the gunk it leaves.
@grumman581 my understanding is that ethanol acts as a solvent. so it cleans out all the petroleum deposits left from gasoline. i have pretty good success by starting off with 10% ethanol in the tank. then 20 in the next 2 refills, then 30 in the next 3, and so on until all the deposits are gradually expelled.
@grumman581 the gunk problems occur if you dump a high concentration of ethanol into a tank that's been on gas for a year or two. another way to have gunk problems is to let the vehicle sit for an extended period of time without running the engine. the ethanol cleans your tank over time - even at 10 or 20%.
Thanks for posting this. Ethanol sucks for sure, especially in small two stroke chainsaws or in boats. It takes 15 per cent more ethanol to acquire the same heat release properties as the same amount of gasoline.
@MrRmh3481 It's not that great in motorcycles with carburetors either. Seems that I have to spend a couple hundred dollars every year or so to get my carbs overhauled because of the varnish that the ethanol contaminated fuel does to my carbs.
@ismasamov55 It is not for me to judge that (that is your own judgement), but really, you might want to look within yourself as to why you want this kind of attention. Anyway, no need to bother with you any further. Have a good day, unless you have other plans. You can, you know!
Ethanol sucks as an additive. Make an engine designed for Ethanol and run in on pure Ethanol, now that would make sense. But given that Ethanol costs MORE than gasoline, and when mixed into gasoline causes lower gas mileage. And the fact that many engines designed to run on gas will be damaged in one way or another, if you put E10 mixtures in them. I say E10 SUCKS!!!
It sounds like no one on this forum has a boat or knows anyone that has a boat because E10 not only corrodes fuel tanks and dissolves fuel lines. It severally decreases MPG and top end speed. Thanks "E10 sucks" for showing me how to test E10 levels in fuel.
E10 does change gas mileage. The mileage is worse. It's a fact. If you want a tester go to a small engine repair shop that services Briggs & Stratton engines. Part number 100023 gasohol test kit allows you to test the level of ethanol in gas up to 30%. It looks just like the test tube in the video.
man, you poor buggers in america really stretch the resources the way you produce ethanol out of corn. that sure is an expensive and long winded way to make the stuff. though i don't know why the video author thinks ethanol sucks, it's awesome stuff as a fuel. maybe it's the corn bit. on the corn bit, i'm with ya buddy, except imported oil's gotta suck worse.
Let me explain something to you. Lets repalce 10% of our fuel with ethanol so we use less OIL but OOPS when you do this you LOSE MORE THAN 10% of your FUEL ECONOMY as a result! (I went from a rock solid 22-24mpg to 13-20mpg) which means???? YOUR NOW BUYING MORE FOREIGN OIL.
Why? one reason. The Corn Industry gets to make money!
If you run JUST ethanol and the fuel is CHEAPER than gasoline OK it makes sense otherwise ethanol FRAKING SUCKS!!
Oil companies are the monopoly. Ill give the farmer a cut rather than the Saudi's. Moonshiners ran their cars on it all the time, Thats what my great uncle did. Also E10 doesnt change gas mileage, Oil companies laugh anyway because they use it in place of MTBE,which is more expensive. And they get tax incentives that are suppose to lower cost of gas.. yeah right. I converted my car to soley use E85 and I get better mileage than using gasoline. So I use 85% less oil.
I am not aware of any state that has passed a mandatory gasoline law. I can buy a car that runs on anything I want. I am aware that four states have mandated that all gasoline sold in the state have 10% ethanol in it ... that is a monopoly last time I checked, you have no choice. Your claim that E85 gives better mileage than gasoline is total BS, I'll bet you burn water in you car too. E85 has only 75% of the energy of gas. Have you published your results? Do it, you will be famous.
It is a fact that the latest engines by Mercedes and VW in Brazil are getting 43 and 46 percent thermal efficiency. The best of IC engines running on pump gas achieve thermal efficiency of 20 percent. Read "Alcohol can be a Gas" by Blume. tinyurl com/56rrda Paste it and add a "dot"
if you were an engine builder , you may dispute the claims. Flex Fuel vehicles are not optimized for fuel efficiency. If they were, they could not burn gasoline due to a very low anti knock index. We have tested over 50 vehicles with all types of mixtures. We found all cars run fine up to e25. some users reported improved mileage/performance with e30. but above e30, then mileage drops. Keep an open mind with ethanol. I have seen good things and bad things when using it. If people know what to expect and use it wisely - it can be a great substitute or additive to gasoline.
@PaganEgyptian My pickup gets 12 mpg with the ethanol contaminated gasoline and 16 mpg with real gasoline. I have run multiple tanks through each way and it definitely gets worse gas mileage with ethanol. Putting ethanol in gasoline is a waste of perfectly good corn squeezins.
Lets see. Ethanol lowers your MPG. Ethanol cost more to make. It takes the equivalent of 2 gallons of gas to make one gallon of Ethanol. Making ethanol takes food out of the food supply. Less food in the food supply is driving up fuel prices.

So the oil companies are screwing us and you want to give the ethanol companies a monopoly so we don't get screwed so bad anymore. What is ironic is that in a lot of cases E10 drops the mileage in a car by more than 10% so that you end up using more gasoline than before and the oil companies laugh all the way to the bank. No wonder they aren't opposing mandatory E10 laws anywhere.
Unfortunately you can't always know if you get pure gas, as some states mandate warning labels on pumps while others do not. So the absence of a label does not mean there's no ethanol therein (unless that area requires it).
All states that have implemented mandatory E10 laws require lables on the pump notifying you that 10% ethanol is being pumped, all 4 of them. Since more and more states are sucumbing to the E10 fad, you will see more labels, especially since ethanol can damage your fuel system.
Actually I was talking about ALL states (50), whether they have insidiously mandated E10 content in gas pumps or not. I have a link to a master list in my other computer that I'll forward when I can get to it, but trust me, Ethanol IS being sold unlabeled. A LOT.
Take Iowa- they don't require ethanol in gas but do require it to be labeled when present. There's a scumsucker state legislator in Iowa right now that's trying to get those labels removed. It's amazing.
@cameramonkey2 i think there is 5.7% in mot gas. but some stations go up to 10%.
