This album was my first taste of Robert Palmer. What class! His music wreaks of it. I recently found out the song was written by Allen Toussaint; another great talent.
@bluessiren78 In Bob's case, he probably didn't think that the coke would make him have a coronary. End of.... I met him, twice and he was/is my hero, but why the f*** did he need the coke?
When I was young ..I had every single one of his albums.. and am sad that I left all of them in the basement in N.J. and they all got moldy and warped....thank god for Utoob!
This album and then Little Feats "Dixie Chicken" good smoke, boiled Crawfish and Budweisers...La. Style...God Bless you Lowell George...I saw him and Little Feat before the crash into the big sky...I will never forget you and Bonnie Raitt on the SLides duo from greatness...Robert Palmer...man those times were good!!! Cajun Out!!!
@1stSaintsFan I had 2 songs in my head when I went searching, Sneakin' Sally and Dixie Chicken. Robert Palmer won this time. Did we do LSD together at the same time?
@glacebayguy1 ...Could of been in the same area and the same party......If you have ever hit the French Quarter...I prefered window pane instead of blotter..LOL!!!! The Dungeon in the old days...WOW!!!...Cajun Out!!!
@1stSaintsFan I’m from original Cajun country, L’acadie. Nova Scotia they call it now. I always preferred double barrel, or microdot over any kind of of blotter. The guy puttin’ the blots on was usually way too high on his own product, all hit and miss, haha
@glacebayguy1 ...You are the from the real McCoy up there brother...You must be a mind reader because the choice in the quarter in the late 70's early 80s was rust colored double barrel. Funny how I forgot??? Must be my old braincells popping up...Nothing like listening to "Sneaking Sally" while hanging out on the upper balcony at my sister's old place on the corner of Dumaine & Dumaine one block off of Bourbon. We would be drinking Dixie Beer, drinking shots and partying all night long...SeeYa!
@1stSaintsFan Eh oop lad.Crawfish, cajuns,Buds and New Orleans..all well and good..but don't forget that Mr Palmer was himself a proud north country son of Batley,Yorkshire.
@MrCFCarePOO ..Mr. Palmer was just lucky to be the mouthpeice on this track....This is La. Music my Friend...I am a true child of England living in La...The Legedary producer/performer/writer ALLEN TOUSSAINT wrote and helped produce this song that was recorded in NEW ORLEANS using the METERS of NOLA...Lowell George of Little Feat slide guitar....THIS IS A SONG OF NOLA not Yorkshire my friend,...this a Song for line dancing in the French Quarter.."Laissez le Bon temp rouler!!!" Cajun Out!!! .
The great ALLEN TOUSSAINT of New Orleans wrote this song and it was recorded in NOLA. TOUSSAINT, Lowel George of Little Feat and the legendary "The Meter" were the session players.Great vocal performance by Robert Palmer...One of La. favorite songs and this is the best version IMO....
I don't know if this has been covered, but the music on this song is not by Palmer--as he claimed in an interview for an English magaizine, but by New Orleans's own The Meters, one of the most talented groups ever out of NO--and that's saying something.
The current issue of OffBeat, a NO music magazine, has an interview with George Porter, of the Meters, covering this. I mean, Christ, listen to that funk. SO New Orleans.
@dennykdoe ...The Meters were the band on this song along with Allen Toussaint (producer) on keyboards and Lowell George on guitar...Recorded in New Orleans...Allen Toussaint is listed as the only writer of the song and the song publisher is screen gems-EMI...As I commented on an earlier post..this is NOLA line dancin' music...NOLA flavor all the way..Palmer is the lucky mouthpiec and he killed it..Pure Greatness

i was 15 and in 76and robert came to the paramount theatre in portland oregon on a "catch a rising star" tour
the band came out one person at a time and started their own gig and slowly built their way into a solid rhythm and then.... out came these 3 totally outrageously hot looking black back up singers that just rocked the house, by then the place was in a fever pitch. and then... robert made his grand entrance. easily one of if not the single best live gig i have been to in all my years
RIP BOBBY, LOWELL, AND RICHIE:( THIS WHOLE EPIC DEBUT HAS LOWELL SLIDING THAT GREASY SEARS CRAFTSMAN 13/16TH SPARK PLUG SOCKET ALL OVER THEM STRINGS. PLAY THIS WHOLE ALBUM AND THEN DIXIE CHICKEN 1 AFTER ANOTHER AND PHEWW! SMELL DAT PHUNK JUST A BURNIN!!

The man was a class act and as an artist covered a whole lot of ground exploring many different sounds & letting himself follow his muse & be moved by all of his eclectic influences. Joe Jackson, Bowie, Talk Talk, there've been a few (oops Beatles!) acts who constantly try something new, but not many. Especially in the MTV Corporate Stooge era where corporate "cool" & high business-hip is crammed down our freakin' throats! I'll always have great respect for this man. Thanks for sharing, peace!
@PaulWanders it was Lowell George on vocals & guitar (Little Feat God) with the Meters behind. I do not remember "The Meters" (I will immediately start searching now! ), but the overall back sound does sound much like Little Feat back then, overall, very cool tune. |:-)>
@swrider5400 This is the way I heard it went down, Lowell had passed away when all of this material was in the works with Little Feat, and Robert was approached about doing the Vocals and he agreed as long as it would be a "Robert Palmer" album and not a Little Feat Album. It is the remaining members of Feat though
@motownharry You heard wrong. Lowell died 4 years after this album was released. Lowell was the only Little Feat member on this album. The Meters & The New York Rhythm Section
@hugh4u I have and only Lowell George played on Sneaking Sally according to Wikipedia. Pressure Drop>yes I agree with that and the next 2 albums had a bunch of Feat personnel
Nobody makes this song theirs. It's too good. It never gets better than this, and I love Phish. But The Meters and Lowell George is about as good as music gets.
lowell produced the album, he wrote most the stuff- robert palmer was utilized as a vocal insturment- the genius is all lowell- get outside, is another great cut off this can't find it on the tUbe
@ElevateZG : The album was produced by Steve Smith. Lowell wrote, "Salin' Shoes", and co-wrote "Blackmail" with Palmer. This tune and "From a Whisper to a Scream" were written by Allan Toussaint. Most was written by Palmer himself. If anything the geniuses on this were The Meters.
What is it about this song? Everybody wants to claim it as thier own. I came to this vid to show a Phish person. also check out the original recording by Lee Dorsey (it's here on youtube) it's also great.

@younwhosarmy Sailing Shoes > Hey Julia > Sneaking Sally, the first three from the original album, have to be heard as if one song. Great, great music!
I heard this for the first time about 20 minutes ago on the radio, I could have sworn it was Stevie Wonder. Apparently there was a lot more to Robert Palmer than Addicted to Love. Love this tune
@kuuil you'd have to go to internet radio I guess. This song didn't get much airplay because of the subject matter and because they may have thought it not "pop" enough.
@kuuil It was on a digital radio station that plays classic rock. Unfortunatley i (like the rest of you) dont live a paradise were commercial radio is remotley listenable
Thanks. You are right, only Lowell from Feat on this album. Sounds so much like Little Feat rhythm section. I have all Robert Palmer's early LPs albums. The Featstersryythm section are on two later albums. Great soun d.
I went through a few vynyl copies of this and then got the CD. The first three tracks of this album are some of grooviest, funkiest tracks ever laid to two inch tape.
Disturbed wishes they had the talent to write a variety of different types of music. They were type cast as soon as thier second album came out. It's all the same. RIP RP.
@roseblood1000 ew why are you even on this video dude, go bump the latest slipknot and keep your thinking your failry common tastes in music somehow make you better than people, noone comes on this video to look for someone to tell them what music to listen to other than this, your a tool.
I use to this CD until I wore it out...great memories. There is one particular song I loved but cannot remember the name of it to save my life. You all sound like such fans of this, maybe someone could help me out...I believe the starting lyrics are "You make me feel like I don't need another, come on baby, let's pull back the covers, find out how much fun (?) we could get in tonight"...I've tried typing that so many different ways with no luck. Thanks.
The Meters rhythm section with Lowell George (fantastic slide guitarist from Little Feat) backed up Robert Palmer for this stellar album :) Hence the Funk!
I love this genre of music in the early to mid 70's because there were performers that wanted to reach a larger audience while showcasing their diversified musical styles and talents. Little Feat and Lowell George fit into this category. For me, it was good music to have on the radio or stereo when friends came over to party and let their hai down. Thanks for allowing a new audience to gain some musical knowledge and appreciation.
For this debut album, he was backed by The Meters, and Little's Feet's Lowell George. Lowell wrote the opening song 'Sailing Shoes', and co-wrote 'Blackmail'.
@roscoegino No doubt that Lowell George's sound helped define that song as did all the players. Me being a harp player, well it jumped out at me in 1974, and it's just as fresh today. Steve York blew harp on that song. He's a bass player by trade. This whole album is amazing.

@kuuil Back in the day, local stations really had alot of freedom, one progressive Mobile Al. station blasted this out
every chance they got, along with so many other "FUNK" tunes from Boz, Wet Willie, Little Feat, &
Grand Funk Railroad , so much so that the "POP" stations had to also follow suit due to requests.

new0rd3r56 1 year ago
@new0rd3r56 I think that Lowell George played on the track, or at least produced it...I think.
sullyb23511 1 year ago
@sullyb23511
Lowell played guitar and The Meters (Neville Brothers) were the main backing band on the album.

One of my favorites. The late Robert Palmer, what a great guy. Sensational sound.

I was listening to his cover of Mercy, Mercy Me/I Want You (originally done by Marvin Gaye) just a few minutes ago. I remembered how much I miss him.

Thanks. You are right, only Lowell from Feat on this album. Sounds so much like Little Feat rhythm section. I have all Robert Palmer's early LPs albums. The Featstersryythm section are on two later albums. Great soun d.

I bought the record when it came out...written by Alan Toussaint with back up by the Meters aka The Neville Brothers and Little Feat...no wonder

funk master that I enjoy as much today as I did back in the day.
Robert loved snow and he paid the price and we were the losers

I went through a few vynyl copies of this and then got the CD. The first three tracks of this album are some of grooviest, funkiest tracks ever laid to two inch tape.

Disturbed wishes they had the talent to write a variety of different types of music. They were type cast as soon as thier second album came out. It's all the same. RIP RP.

Always been my favorite Palmer cover. If I ever manage to nail those harp licks I'm headed straight to Cali.

@KINDOS11 You just can't handle the true power disturbed brings with their music. And i hear that from a person who can't spell "doone" right.

Saw Robert in concert once in New York, with my oldest brother and he kicked ass.

Thanks.

@nickdabsta

I'm pretty sure this is the album that Littlle Feat was the band for Palmer. It sure sounds like Littlle Feat musically.

@Cooleemee43
For this debut album, he was backed by The Meters, and Little's Feet's Lowell George. Lowell wrote the opening song 'Sailing Shoes', and co-wrote 'Blackmail'.

@roscoegino Delbert McClinton, Meters, Neville Bros - not quite the same
but as close as you'll get that I know of
yourunclehank1 1 year ago
@roscoegino Got to e-mail with the harp player on that song. It was pretty enlightening.
flstf2k 1 year ago
@flstf2k Really? Amazing, man. People talk about Lowell (and he's outstanding)but I think the harp solo is just as great as anything in the song.
roscoegino 1 year ago
@roscoegino No doubt that Lowell George's sound helped define that song as did all the players. Me being a harp player, well it jumped out at me in 1974, and it's just as fresh today. Steve York blew harp on that song. He's a bass player by trade. This whole album is amazing.
