  • i love his intros to wrs prelude and the awesome China Cat counter-melody and Feelin' Groovy jam outro.

i tell folks i play percussion like a rhythm guitarist.

  • Bob is awesome. He was a founding member of the Grateful Dead. Only argument we need.

  • The sound on this recording is insane. It has to be one of the better quality recordings. Everything is so clear and up front but in place. AMAZING!!!

  • bob weir is hands down the most underrated guitarist ever and hes a great songwriter. weather report sweet is a masterpeice. improvising rhythm guitar is alot harder tham improvising leads espesially the way bob does it, with alot of complex voiceleading.

  • agreed. as a songwriter, he's hit or miss. as a vocalist, he's lovable but clunky.

as a performer, a bit of a cheeseball. but as a rhythm guitarist, he is an absolute genius.

    the best there is.

  • This is a gem! It's stellar all these freshies got reserved in time to pass on through the generations

  • This is one of the best jams they ever had. Listen to Phil fucking Lesh throughout. Proof positive they were the best band in the world from 1970-1977.

  • if u can sit still 2 this go c a dr.

  • killer audio much appreciated

  • @geekorthodox9

right on dude. there's a good reason why Bobby is the only guitar player that Jerry played with on the regular. The way Bobby, Phil and Jerry compliment each other is beyond comprehension... and to think that Phil picked up the bass as a favor to Jerry..... this jam is sublime

  • this is the kind of stuff I have trouble finding on youtube. for someone who is 31, the Grateful Dead have not been as accessable as I would like. It just feels so far away from me and there are always things to be discovered. I have had the luxury suite with Phish, but the Grateful Dead has so many of these moments, i.e, this jam, that it seems endless and I will never really discover them. Maybe that's one thing that seeing a band live will do for you. This is awesome.

  • @guitarpick678 damn thats a lot of speakers, why so many?

  • @horbergaren - in 1973 the Dead had a huge sound system built, it became known as the "Wall of Sound". They wanted something very loud and very clear. If you google "Wall of Sound" you'll find more about it. They used it in '74 but the cost and effort of transporting it around became too much.

  • @guitarpick678 all the pics are from '74 :)

  • Are you sure all the pics are from 74? The picture of Phil at 2:00 minutes, I think is a little bit later. If I remember correctly, he had a pretty big, furry beard during most of 74. And the picture at 2:40, I'm not sure about either, as I think Jerry had retired the "Alligator" Strat in favor of the "Wolf" guitar by then. Regardless, it's a cool slide show, love seeing pictures of The Dead from this period, especially of Jerry playing the Wolf.

  • Jerry's blues playing is absolute insanity.... the best.

  • More jam in awesome tune than blueberry jam

  • this is great stuff, and i love bobby's rhythm, always have, always will. no one plays guitar like him.

and this is a hot jam too!! but this is NOT an "other one" jam

  • @geekorthodox9 - mixed bag. bobby "misses" as often as he hits. many of his "choices" are jarringly bad.

  • Bob is a big pinky man - he's good at fiddling that finger to add little flourishes here and there - he throws that "X" factor in where even he doesn't know exactly what's going to happen...the dead in a nutshell

  • You know I always thought this. I've heard many people putting Bob down for the volume of his guitar, or that they don't think he's any good. As a musician myself, I've found Bob's playing to be full of surprises. He has little things to add the mix to make it sound awesome. Like the small vibrato's he incorporates in dark star, or the beginning of Big River. All these guy's are awesome, without each other, there would be no Dead!

  • thank you for posting this. It's allowed me to forward to non deadheads to expand their perceptions of what the GD is, are, were........mean!

  • Listen to that! Keith & Billy layin the funky grooves at the start & Jerry finishing things off. Sweet.

  • keith and billy are funkin' it up, there's nothing like the boys from 72'-74,peak of their powers.
