I can't completely state the purpose, but those "American" structures was a part of a mental institution and hospital. In fact, I went with a group of students as a part of Purdue University's Computer Graphics Department to recreate the Muscatatuck area as a real-time virtual tour/walkthrough as it was when the site was operational for the visitors center. One of the reasons for this apart from the preservation of history was because the Army was in fact tearing down some of the structures

Oh my god this is the funniest thing I've ever seen!!! This place is an old abandoned mental hospital that has been turned over to the Indiana National Guard to be used as a training center. @ChangeOhio You're welcome to rent MUTC for your own disaster training seminars. FYI, it now has a mosque, a stadium, an embassy, a flooded area with houses for recovery ops. There are Afghan and Iraqi villages, a farm, caves and a mine. It's also used by firefighters, EMTs, various non-profit rescue groups and private emergency groups. If you call public affairs, they'll quote you a very reasonable rate for use, and lodging is included. Did you notice there's no fence around it?

@ceverest2 It's an open site and they're allowed to film most of it, so there's no OPSEC problem. Units in the field conduct their own security--that's part of the training. Even the cadre are subject to roadblocks and wear civvies half the time to add to the "population." There are two county roads going right through the site, which adds to the realism--there are actual civilians in the middle of events. I agree, however, that ChangeHisUnderwear is a douche.

Most of those homes were there when I was a kid. The vietnamese doctors lived there. I used to work at that Mental Hospital. My mom was barely able to retire from there before the last of the "clients" were relocated to group homes & such...I grew up in Butlerville...

It's an old Indiana mental institution used by the Army for urban combat training for units going overseas, not for training for war with Americans like the description says. The helicopters are used for training scenarios like rescuing a downed crew. They also have CCTV and infra red cameras all over the place so we can critique ourselves, so I can guarantee that you were being watched on camera. The white RVs are FEMA trailers in case of a disaster.

If you go to the website, there are promotional videos showing the "collapsed" buildings (built that way) and other features. They have a mosque set up and are training people to understand the culture and be prepared for combat there. They have people from Afghanistan assisting in the training and there is nothing going on involving war in America.
