All power to Russell Thompkins Jr - he deserves to be heard making this sound with a group of any name. The New Stylistics suits the purpose, and it is great that he has access to the brand without being sued.

I've heard Stylistics live twice with Aaron and Herb and Raymond (the first time in 1984). I had no objection to the harmony sound - BUT Airron is out of tune in his lead on "You Make Me Feel Brand New" - both on recording and live.

This would be the stronger lineup.

DAMN he sounds the EXACT SAME as he did back in the day! I would rather see THESE Stylistics in concert than any other because all of their hits are mostly Russell's voice anyway. All the other members have to do is just sing background and harmonize!

So why is this so great? For one, RT's voice is a wee bit deeper with a wee bit more edge, a Rock-Bossa beat with all those fat Major 9 chords, an oboe, fantastic musicians backing up the vocals, and then it modulates. This chart is over the top!!!

I played on some of the original Stylistics hits at Sigma Sound Studios 12th and Race , and 309 S Broad. I also played on the road in their backing band, The Philadelphia Sound. THE ORIGINAL STYLISTICS NEVER SOUNDED THIS GOOD! Russ and Rainbow Johnson put fire back in these great Linda Creed and Thom Bell productions. If Russell Thompkins jr isn't singing, it's not the Stylistics!

FVR5000 speaks the truth...Bobby Eli is a colleague of mine who played on the Stylistics/Thom Bell recordings as part of MFSB & confirms that only Russell sang on those recordings. Carl Helm, Phil Hurtt & Bunny Sigler provided the background vocals. And yes, I'm aware of what went down that led to Russell & the original members parting company. Let's face it - as long as Russell is still living, breathing & singing, folks will pay their good money to see him & the New Stylistics, period.

Back in the day, I've been so freaking fortunate to have heard the original Stylistics LIVE and direct with Mr Russell Thompkins, Jr.on the lead vocals! Simply awesome! It's sad that Russell left the band, but I know that the band did not have the same backing musicians all through their tours anyway. I would go see Russell and his "New Stylistics" before I'd go see Eban's "Stylistics." Just the way I feel about that man's voice! No one can compare!

I love ths live performance with all my heart. What an incredible classic performance bringing back timeless memories. Russell's voice sounds as dynamic as the day this song was released. It has been posted before...but for the late comer's like tisjoje..."Russell was the band!"...he recorded every vocal, every lead. The other members were never in the studio except for the day the photos were taken. Simply stated...they cannot sing...all those records were done by Russell, Thom Bell and Van McCoy...ONLY!

@fvr5000 I need to thank you I've been listening to these songs and know them well,but Mr.Russell and his people pulled this off masterfully. When I about 14yrs old something very tragic happened and I listened to these songs all through those times. Ultimately it was the LORD who brought me through those times and it is encouraging to hear so many young folks enjoy this music. This era is when families were king. yes russell still sounds good, but come on, these are not the stylistics. it takes the whole group to make this name. these guys should be called the russell thompkins band because the group that eban leads are all the original band members. explain the whole situation to a six grader. and then ask him which would he consider to be the stylistics and im sure he would say the band that eban leads!!!! not russell thompkins!!!!

You are mislead and living in pure fantasy! Russell Thompkins, Jr. and only Russell sang every hit record attributed to the group. The group named the "Stylistics" never sang on any Tom Bell production and only after Russell pleading with the producer and record label was Arrion Love allowed to sing on one (1) song. Russell sang all the hits by himself, with help from Tom Bell, the Philly Angels and Van McCoy-nobody else! In the Eightys all the hits were sung by just Russell and Raymond Johnson.

You make absolutely no sense. The undeniable fact is that Russell Thompkins IS the Stylistics. He was the only member of the group to sing on any of their hit records, except one song where Airron Love was given a few verses at Russell's insistence. Thom Bell wouldn't even let the other guys sing background on the records.

The Stylistics are a group in name only. The other guys should thank Russell for continuing the charade and giving them a job all these years.

I'm glad some people see the real truth. RT was the only voice on the first 3 albums as told by Russell himself. I'm surprised he continued to perform with Herb and Airrion for another 20 sum years

HE left the group, because he was having throat problems. Then the guys hired new singers, he fell out with them, and then started his own group. Just like the Temptations.... on one side, there's the original group with no original lead singer, and on the other side, there's the original lead singer with no other original group members, and neither the twain shall meet...

Your post is interesting, but your final analysis is patently wrong because Raymond Johnson, is the only other voice featured on the 3 TSOP albums by the Stylistics. Raymond was with the group in total for 11 years and is an important and validating component of the New Stylistics! In reality, you have one group "in name alone" with no other tangible assets and the other who made the music, sang and wrote the songs. As Thom Bell stated, "...Russell Thompkins, Jr. is the Stylistics!"

Edge...Russell is still performing! He is not "lost"...he is still traveling the world doing concerts..his group is the Original Band...original musicians of the "Stylistics" and his group IS...Russell Thompkins, Jr. & the NEW Stylistics!!!
