i love this song, i didnt know the kinks sang it, when i first heard the song,i thought it was a spanish band playing it,but its the kinks, wow, sounds great
Hi, we are a band that are heavily influenced by the kinks! If you could please spare 2 seconds to listen to a band that are still trying to play real music then check us out at our channel.
wow, reminds me the time they came to Louisville to promote this album and I bought my ticket before I even asked for permission to go...was well worth the punishment I got for sneaking out to see them after my parents told me no ;D
Ray Davies stars in dual roles here..he'd later reprise one of them in the Followup video "Don't Forget To Dance",which picks up where " Come Dancing" left off!
The big gulf betw. Beatles, Stones, Who, & Kinks is that Kinks took cue not from Am. R&B but from English dance hall music; you sure can hear it in Come Dancing!
I love the Kinks and always knew the 60s hits like 'You Really Got Me' and 'Sunny Afternoon' but I never knew this song until just last year. I Never knew they would continue on after 1970 quietly from the charts until 1983 with this great song charting in at no.12 in the UK.
I loved this song when it came out [and still do]because it was the first song Ray Davies had written in years that didn't sound like something he wrote back in the sixties.
What a great story and the video is just brilliant. The Kinks are without doubt one of the greatest rock groups ever to have come out of Britain. I love Oasis but would in truth place this band even higher. The Kinks had hits in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. Even the Beatles as a band could not do this.
@dan3324123 - Part of *his* childhood memories, as shown in the video and in the lyrics, were watching his sister going out and returning from dancing on her dates.
It's a very joyful song, groovy, indeed. But didn't his sister die of a fatal heart attack while dancing? I believe it was a little after his 13th birthday, wasn't it?
@MixtursahProductions yup, according to wikipedia, thats how she passed. interestingly enough, she had just given him a guitar earlier that day. dunno if it was his first guitar, but if it was, god bless her for making sure ray got into music!
this is a great song melodically the lyrics tells a story.. music was done well even in the 80's i never knew it at that time. compared to today's crap
where the message is shallow and always about sex. let's see a revival of this type of singing and song writing!
if i could only listen to one band for the rest of my life and cut out all of the others, i'd keep the kinks. i need them. their music is like oxygen to me. absolute perfection.
If I were in that situation, I would probably pick ABBA! In my opinion, the corniness of "Dancing Queen" hits the spot every time! Such a feel-good song sung by such a lovely quartet!
i love the kinks!!!! it sucks that they are underrated, the majority of the people don't remember them, even though they where just as big as the beatles at some time and where also one of the first british invasion bands...
Is there a version of this song that a latino guy sang. i could have sworn i had seen a live performance of it in the early and the guy was in a white suit and part of the song was in spanish i think
The Kinks were part of the "Big Four" of the 1964 British Invasion (The others being The Beatles, The Rolling Stones & The Who) .
Like those other bands, they have a rich history of singles & albums. Yea, some of their best work may have been overlooked (especially by North American audiences) but Ray Davies & company will always be remembered as one of the greats.
Just for fun, I am going to point out that the year that you mentioned was the same year that my parents got married, "Gilligan's Island" made its debut and the first G. I. Joes were manufactured! On top of all of this, Helen Hunt was one year old!
Ray is one of the best overlooked song writers of our time.Be it lighter pop or more socially aware songs. He grew as we grew.Could you ask for better company ??
Holy shit. Okay, I'm 14. I've listened to this song my whole life. Literally, since forever ago. I'm so glad that there used to be this kind of music, it makes me so happy:).
@jennnykennny it's up to you and your generation to keep it coming...and you will. :) Keep diggin back through the years & listening to todays musicians. It's not all, good but there is always a little treasure hiding somewhere..
I remember watching the premier of this video on Friday Night Video's which used to air on NBC I think. We didn't have MTV up here in Canada yet, I don't even think we had Much Music which is the Canadian version of MTV, when this came out. Seems like a lifetime ago...
I think how it's great how the kinks had been together for something like 20 years when this came out, talk about longevity. Nowadays most groups are over and done with after like 5 years.
@PCJews I agree. This is a true music video.. Not the ones of today "Get Money, Boobs.. Cash Money..' lol.. Today's music is so disgraceful. What a shame that music videos such as this with timeline stories cannot be made anymore..
Another great track by Mr Ray Davies and The Kinks. I believe that it reached no. 12 (in the UK) charts, back in the September of 1983. It deserved to be a considerably bigger hit that that, IMCO.

Maybe the best song Ray had wrote in a decade or so, but such a shame about the awful production. Is Mick on a drum machine for this? And that shitty synth!! Geeez!
okay, where did you get this version? BECAUSE this version is missing the trombones at the end of the song on the right channel! i always liked the separation of the horn section and noticed this was missing...
I was lucky enough to see the Kinks in concert in the 1980's. Back then the tickets were general seating and it was who ever got there was the closest to the stage. At lease for this show. Anyway my friend and I got there early enough for the sound check and ended up standing against the stage. It was so neat to be able to reach out and shake their hands and strum their guitar as they held out for us. Such a great concert and the only time I was ever that close to the stage.
I remember being at high school when this was released and hoping each week it would reach no1 which i think it stalled at n02 but still a great video.
This song makes me feel like a kid again. Yeah I remember watching this on MTV too. It's all reality crap now. I don't know why they still call it MTV? Maybe it should be RTV.

@jamreaper Except that not all songs are "completely" different - it's pretty easy to hear similar styles of vocal delivery on many of there earlier tracks. By the way - The Kinks (formally called the Ravens - with no success) came about in 1964....and used the Beatles promoter 'Arthur Howes' to set up there live gigs.
I grew up listening to both bands in the 60's and the Kinks were always being referred to as "A poor copy of the Beatles" - but evoled well into a great band in there own right
@tomburley yeah well obviously some songs are not going to be exact opposites, seeing as both bands were english and made music in the same time frame, but the beatles had more smooth vocals, they used less grindy sounds which is what made the kinks popular in the first place
What a great song! Ray was absolutely right when he said, "You end up blowin' all your wages for a week, all for a cuddle and a peck on the cheek." However, this tune still brings back good memories.
I love this song. This is one of my favorite songs EVER. Was it really done in 1982? Seems like yesterday. I love Ray Davies. The charwomen at the end - Davies always *saw* charwomen....and other types overlooked. Bless him.
i love this song, i didnt know the kinks sang it, when i first heard the song,i thought it was a spanish band playing it,but its the kinks, wow, sounds great

@brianbuck70 I agree with you by far on that one buddy.

@brianbuck70 Why cut down another great to prop up Ray? You're just closing people's eyes with the negativity.
TroyBlackford 6 months ago
@TroyBlackford No negativity, just saying I prefer Ray's vision and music to Lennons.

Bless him.
