That's the point, it's meant to be spare-sometimes you can say more with less. My first love is classical music -but this, like a lot of his stuff, is lovely.
pobinr - Don't be bitter about beauty ... Bach & Debussy served their era and people and survived. Pat metheny is moving our hearts and souls and cannot be depreciated. Music is not always mathematics of sounds and architecture of chords >>> by the way nobody so far tried to compare metheny to Bach or Debussy (thx God).
Pat, obrigado pela sua música maravilhosa. Vou leva-la por toda minha existência e transcendência. Um grande abraço do fundo do coração. Geovanny Varela.
Something quite sedative about his music, I should say hypnotic. A brilliant musician and composer, and gotta love those black and white striped shirts he always wears LOL.
its true artists that can sense how a melody so uplifting and joyous can present itself as though there's something terribly wrong deep down underneath the surface of the skin. the surface tends to hide the true desires of the soul.
My ex-wife considers this sacred musisc and I have to admiit that it is pretty special. When I first heard it I was immediately moved by its emotional content. It just takes you somewhere else as soon as you hear the underlying riff and Metheny's use of the guitar is extraordinary in it's depth and range. It is a masterpiece that takes you on a magic carpet ride.
I listened to this song (and the rest on the same album) some time long ago, over and over by myself while on a mushroom-trip and it was an amazing journey! Can't say I've ever experienced anything similar ever again... I became one with every note! :-)

I have loved this song since back in the day when I bought this type of music on vinyl. This never gets old for me. You gotta follow the traffic flow in the music. This song as a travel concept worked for me as I traveled the U.S!
Great elevator music. Pleasant & floaty, but almost nil compositional substance. Ideal music for people that lack the perception to appreciate that fact.
All going mad over it !
Come on there's nothing there in comparison to when you listen to a bit of Bach or Debussy !
@pobinr Check out this so called 'elevator' music performed with the Metropole Orchestra at the North Sea Jazz Festival. While you're at it, also have a look at Pat and the orchestra's performance of First Circle and Minuano. Pat's music favorably compares with Bach and Debussy. He is a Beethoven of the 20th century.

@pobinr what is the matter with people, you mean to tell me that you just can't like what you hear? Of course you can listen to music that is so complicated that it's almost incomprehensible. We as people act as though we can't enjoy the simple things in life,as much as I like Trane my God do we always have to be so high and mighty with everything we do?Just enjoy it won't hurt or make you any less than what you are.
@pobinr have you ever heard about the beauty of simplycity ??
Your comment only shows how much of an intellectual person you take yourself, and how this only allows you to fall for the complex things. Certainly everybody has the right to like and dislike wathever they want, but always maintaining respect for the people who don't think like you. With that said, I must say that this song is not about time signature, or chord progression, but about intensity and development. Best Regards
@pobinr who said anything about compositional substance? Its not technicalities that make this song great, or any music great. You think its easy to compose brilliance? Simplicity is often more beautiful than complexity. Get a clue.
This is one his best. If I knew how, I would put my train videos with it on YouTube. So many things to say about this piece. The base line is the most intriguing I have ever heard. There is a transition in the piece a change of Phase that changes mood but maintains the spirit. The tune is always there but it is being improvised all the way through. I hear harmonies that make me sense being on a bus or a train. At the end there is real sense of arrival. “I am going with You.
I cannot explain exactly how I feel when I hear this song. Just hard to put into words. This song is a masterpiece! Thank you Pat, Lyle and the rest of the PMG.

Offramp was the first Metheny Group record I bought, 1983, in college. I listened to this track non-stop over and over nearly all night long, through headphones and loud. Could not get enough of this song, changed my standards for what qualifies as good music forever. Still love this song, still gives me goosebumps. Have seen Pat over 30 times since 1986, twice last year for the Orchestrion tour. In a world with much to be concerned about this music stands as an oasis of wonder & amazement.
WOW.... I bought this LP when I was playing on a Pairate Radio Station. LOVED this track so much that I got to play this and had so much feed back from the listeners. My dear college roomate and I discovered "Offramp" when it was first released in 1982 and it took our breath away. Naturally the live version gave me goosebumps as well. The "dislikes" are difficult to understand especially if you're a music lover. Good music touches the soul and sends you places nothing else can. I'm so happy God invented music and talented musicians like Pat. gsierra4b
Somewhere, for decades now, there is a guy who proudly says he performed with PMG in this concert. You can here him at the very end over the very last fading notes. Wait for it - wait for it - - there it is. YAH-HOOooooo. How I would love to be that guy.
Mitten in der Nacht im Winter 1985 auf der Autobahn A45. Es schneit lautlos riesige Schneeflocken und von Kassette läuft: "Are you going with me". Da spricht ER: "Hier bin ICH!" -Are you going with me?"- Welch ein Tag!!! ER hat mein Leben verändert!
I am from Germany and it was my brother who was responsible for me listening to this genious in the first place and I cannot thank him enough for that. Saw him live on stage 3 times in Düsseldorf. This tune in particular is a milestone in jazz history.
I can only hope that this kind of music will never cease to be produced since there is so much commercial trash out there. Of course, music is a matter of taste, but there are definitely qualitative differences. Mesmerizing song.
Thats the name of the LP, 1980's, still got it in vinyl and think Toots (Thielemans) is with him here. One of the best (modern) jazz guitar players all time.
Nobody needs to defend Pat Metheny and his various groups. I've been a fan since Bright Size Life and was lucky to catch them down in Miami in the early 80's. Their music is magic. If you don't like it, I feel sad for you.
incredible creation by Pat, I agree this tune is really really a voyage, and I can't say enough about it- It never ever gets old.....thefunkytaz is an well no comment, an unappreciative no comment at best

What this song brings me to is really unexplainable with words, and I'm not saying this just to be poetical. What I get is a mix of thoughts, emotions, memories, passions, images and even fears, I can't explain this last though. I used to be afraid to listen to this song, I don't know why, maybe it is because the emotions seem to eat my brain, too many, really: really, thank you Pat for what you give us, I know you will never read this, but your music has really made me fall in love with you...
I woke up slumped down. My car was already greatly damaged! My dog was at my feet and i was sliding sideways toward a tree. I survived and made it to Ark. in my nearly totaled and bent in half Cady, but my dog died days later, RIP my little buddy. But I still love this song! It was the last thing I remembered before going to sleep, it's the most haunting song of my life. How ironic that it was always a haunting song to me the first time I heard it. I was forever hooked on the Pat Metheny Group.
Early 80's I was around 18 in my first car, a '73 Cady sedan deville. I was alone with my little poddle "Hercules" traveling to Arkansas from Chicago listening to this song on the radio, that was when they would still play a 15 minute song! Well I fell a sleep listening to this song! I was doing 60 mph!
This is one of my favorite songs too, but you must hear it with Anna Maria Jopek singing! It's on a recording called "Upojenie"! She and Pat make beautiful love! See for yourself!
...With all of the Great and not so Great Guitarists Creating and Re-creating...Pat Metheny has managed to successfully Create his own distinctive Sound...Bravo!
I was sailing with some friends one day and I popped in my Patheny "Off Ramp" cassett, and when this song came on it was perfect timing with the wind that was hitting the sail... awesome, awesome, awesome memory!!!!! this was a great down load! thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard this track 24 years ago, at least and re-discovered it only a week ago searching the net. It still gives me goose bumps and makes me feel life is definitely worth living if only just to have the priviledge of being woed by such awesome creativity...... wow!!
Met Pat whilst I was attending The High School Of Performing Arts in NYC three decades ago. He noticed my guitar case, pointed to it gave me a smile and said to "play it with passion" I was 14 and star struck. A moment to actually get advice, pointers, a lesson!! from one of the greatest musicians of our time, and all I could muster was a smile and "okay I will" Wow what a dumb ass I was.
simply amazing..found out about Pat Metheny through an ex-boyfriend and although our relationship did not last...I will forever be grateful for that relationship for discovering this music.
Great piece--but the grooves definitely a bit of a rip off of brazilian singer Ivan Lins' song Aparacida--check it out on Youtube--you'll see what i mean
While listening this "Are you going with me" I am one the way to the stars like a mysterious traveller until the end of our cosmos. Are you going with me ?
One of the all time best live instrumental recordings, call it what you will, FIERCE! SOULFUL, had to pull my car to the side first time i heard it on air. Brenda Russell, a fan.
Metheny’s (and Mays’) wonderful music has accompanied me for many years and has inspired some of my music. Echoes and atmospheres can emerge especially in a “tribute” to the two I wrote in 1993. I would be very happy if someone who likes Metheny's music would give a listen to this piece of mine and let me know his/her opinion: the title here on YT is HOMAGE N.8 A PAT METHENY & LYLE MAYS (I prefer the “B” part from 2’00’’ on and the “special” in 7/8 from 2’50’’ on)
On the 4th of December, it was the aftermath of my dad's pleasant birthday party and for most of it, I decided to remain in my bedroom, avoiding having to talk to all his old friends and stuff. Then past midnight, he's called me from the living room. and by then everyone had left. He said, "Come here! Listen to this..." and we sat there for the next 6 minutes of the song, feeling out mind, staring at the ceiling. And from that moment on, this song reminds me of my father and how much I love him.
este fantastico musico lodescubri en chile escuchandoradio concierto era el año 1980 tenia yo 15 años aun me sigue sorprendiendo. la ultima que lo vi fue buenos aires 93en vivo teatro gran rex
Discovered Metheny while up on a prison wall tower in NY. Evenining shift, back in 83'. Seen him twice. During those significate moments in my life... well.. that guitar was there.
@megustalavainilla13 many years ago i dreamt this gig, vivid, cymbals shimmer water,it wasn"t so strange, cause i must have played it a thousand times, thanx pat for the dreams,i still listen on a weekly basis something by pat band, try "above the treetops, studio"s great & live.........must try to see him in concert,if u see he"s playing uk let me know,i walk a thousand miles 4 1 of your smiles.....tablababa@gmail.com
still life is good 2 and if you travels is even betta....then you could send a letter from home...look at a map of the world from above the tree tops...intentionally miss the last train home.have an immaginary day..but.. speaking of now ..don't forget ...we've all got a secret story to tell....
Don't understand how 18 guys could have disliked that. Pat metheny, and especially in this song, make a music that is universal : It's not like metal, rap, or techno that are special type of music that sounds not good for everyone. He express so much, but in a so pure way, that i can't understand any dislikes.
many similar are not to understand, this creates a difference, which could be apologized, who cares about sort of minority, would you please ignore, instead of grumbling,? greetzzz ;)
This is the best version ever I agree life is good !!...and....have you heard ?
still life is good 2 and if you travels is even betta....then you could send a letter from home...look at a map of the world from above the tree tops...intentionally miss the last train home...have another imaginary day but... hey !!..don't forget we've all got a secret story to tell...and speaking of now. you still asking me if i'm going with you ?Regards to all lovers of pat,s work from Another vintage P.M. fan
What he was using then, and still does, is a Roland GR-300 Guitar Synth. He's dragged that thing around with him since the 79. Sounds as good now as it did then.
this particular set up is his Roland GR-300 synth. But he used and uses both the Roland G-303 and GR-300. I think he's been known to use the VG series as well, but that was more recent.
the best thing that ever happen to me was on a cold winter night Dec 24 Xams eve i was 16 years old and head my very first pat song ,it took my soul i am 52 now this man is the best thing in the music of jazz if you want to call it that best
GRACIAS DIOS!!!
I love this piece. It starts with a basic monotonous progression but later the guitar solo goes all over the place harmonically, surfing scales with such pristine beauty. Improvisation and significant melodies are so rarely found together.
This song wastes me everytime i hear it. Pat pours his emotion into this piece and I've felt it since high school. LONG LIVE PAT METH! wait, that "meth" part didn't sound right...heh heh
There appears to be some talk about elevators here. If this track was playing on an elevator I'd simply never get off it. Instrumental music is not for everyone, as classical is not, and as 'any kind' is not. No-one should have to defend what someone else dislikes as it is quite normal. I always feel it detracts from what is playing when I get hooked into reading reactions to differing tastes. Some 'tube users post strong anti-comments just to get reactions. Don't buy into it.
@Everyone! - Obviously Raymond can not, and never will be able to understand, so why even bother? This song ROCKS MY SOUL! Anyone who can't feel it probably has no soul to begin with!
agree with @gsh777ful above - saw several years of PMG concerts when living in Portugal in early 90s (he was VERY popular in Porto & sold out each time - helped that the acoustics in the hall suited his particular sound! oh btw he had a really GREAT sound man on the mixing desk at that time) Still some of the best concerts I have ever been to!!
Like I said i loved this back in the day ..still do..it's BS to try and slam what anyone listens to ..but if I'd ever gotten on an elevator and found this..would have counted myself very luck!
@RaymondFRevalee. music like art cannot and will not be universally liked by everyone, so if someone loves this piece good for them and if in your case you think its high grade elevator music at best please let me know what elevators you use.
Depends on how immersed you are in it. Have you got decent speakers ? Or even decent headphones ?
Even Bach can sound indifferent and busy on a toy radio.
Play it loud to get the immediacy. And get an decent amp and some good speakers . God forbid don't judge it purely on the merits of this thrice compressed offering.
That would be like judging the Sistene Chapel through the jpegs on Wikipedia.
Go get amongst it. *Then* tell me it can't move your soul.
The live version is the BEST... greatest solo ever. Travels album is full of Pat's best solos... ever.

favorite song of me and my brother, used to listen to it with our father when we were kids...
dbenx 5 months ago
Hey folks,
I am from Germany and it was my brother who was responsible for me listening to this genious in the first place and I cannot thank him enough for that.

Surely cuz the rythm is right like the beats of a heart, I could listen it forever...waiting..."are you going with me?"...

Thats the name of the LP, 1980's, still got it in vinyl and think Toots (Thielemans) is with him here. One of the best (modern) jazz guitar players all time.
Cool down and enjoy, it's only! music.

Nobody needs to defend Pat Metheny and his various groups. I've been a fan since Bright Size Life and was lucky to catch them down in Miami in the early 80's. Their music is magic. If you don't like it, I feel sad for you.

Great Metheny song from a great album, 1982's "Offramp"! Pat's ECM discography (1976 - 1985) just soothes the most tumultuous soul.....

I was forever hooked on the Pat Metheny Group.
roylcraft 8 months ago
Early 80's I was around 18 in my first car, a '73 Cady sedan deville. I was alone with my little poddle "Hercules" traveling to Arkansas from Chicago listening to this song on the radio, that was when they would still play a 15 minute song! Well I fell a sleep listening to this song! I was doing 60 mph!

This is one of my favorite songs too, but you must hear it with Anna Maria Jopek singing! It's on a recording called "Upojenie"! She and Pat make beautiful love! See for yourself!

1 LOVE XXL FOR YOU BY DJ RASGAD VINCENT
RASGADVINCENT 9 months ago
Met Pat whilst I was attending The High School Of Performing Arts in NYC three decades ago. He noticed my guitar case, pointed to it gave me a smile and said to "play it with passion" I was 14 and star struck. A moment to actually get advice, pointers, a lesson!! from one of the greatest musicians of our time, and all I could muster was a smile and "okay I will" Wow what a dumb ass I was.

Don't understand how 18 guys could have disliked that. Pat metheny, and especially in this song, make a music that is universal : It's not like metal, rap, or techno that are special type of music that sounds not good for everyone. He express so much, but in a so pure way, that i can't understand any dislikes.

Is Pat Metheny driving a MIDI or some other sort of synthesizer signal with his guitar?
vibratingstring 1 year ago
@vibratingstring
What he was using then, and still does, is a Roland GR-300 Guitar Synth. He's dragged that thing around with him since the 79. Sounds as good now as it did then.
cbmuzik 11 months ago
@vibratingstring
this particular set up is his Roland GR-300 synth. But he used and uses both the Roland G-303 and GR-300. I think he's been known to use the VG series as well, but that was more recent.

I love this piece. It starts with a basic monotonous progression but later the guitar solo goes all over the place harmonically, surfing scales with such pristine beauty. Improvisation and significant melodies are so rarely found together.

Amazing piece of music. It just makes me feel good when I listen to it... Isn't that what music is supposed to do? Mission accomplished!!
intune1234 1 year ago
There appears to be some talk about elevators here. If this track was playing on an elevator I'd simply never get off it. Instrumental music is not for everyone, as classical is not, and as 'any kind' is not. No-one should have to defend what someone else dislikes as it is quite normal. I always feel it detracts from what is playing when I get hooked into reading reactions to differing tastes. Some 'tube users post strong anti-comments just to get reactions. Don't buy into it.

agree with @gsh777ful above - saw several years of PMG concerts when living in Portugal in early 90s (he was VERY popular in Porto & sold out each time - helped that the acoustics in the hall suited his particular sound! oh btw he had a really GREAT sound man on the mixing desk at that time) Still some of the best concerts I have ever been to!!

OK.
